Talisman returns once again, in this slightly modified 4th edition, which now includes plastic figures, revised adventure cards, stackable markers and more. But above all, this edition has been tweaked to allow for expansions!
Talisman takes you on a journey through magical lands, as you endeavor to reclaim the Crown of Command. Each turn will see your hero advancing, battling, gaining knowledge and power necessary to defeat the guardians lurking between the Portal of Power and the Valley of Fire.
Game includes:
- Revised Rulebook
- 6-fold game board
- 14 Character Cards with matching plastic character figures
- Over 100 Adventure cards
- 24 Spell cards
- 28 Purchase cards
- 4 Talisman cards
- 4 Toad cards
- 4 Plastic Toad figures
- 4 Alignment cards
- 6 Six-sided die
- 40 Strength Counters
- 40 Craft Counters
- 40 Life Counters
- 36 Fate Tokens
- 30 Gold Coins

In terms of components (board, pieces, tokens, etc) this is the usual quality FFG production. The rulebook is a little rough around the edges, but does include a flowchart to help deal with what happens when you land on a new location.
The playing time listed on the box of 90 minutes is likely hopelessly off if you have anywhere approaching the given maximum of six players, and some characters seem so much better than others that it's worth dogpiling anyone using them early on to prevent them from otherwise dominating the game. (Arguably such dogpiling is part of the fun of the game.)
I don't know if my judgement is influenced by unfair comparison with my warm fuzzy memories of playing the original game with school friends, but only three stars for this version. Still this could be worth getting for your gaming group, as it is the latest incarnation of a little piece of fantasy game history.

I already own the un-revised edition! I would be very interested to know whether the expansions are compatible with that version before I purchase them. What in particular is different about the revised edition that makes it compatible with the expansions?

You will need to get the "upgrade" pack to update your un-revised version to the revised version. The expansions were made specifically for the revised version. The board and the card design changed. They also added a new rule for "fate". IMO, the changes are good, and the expansions really add to the package.

I can't answer your question directly, but I can tell you that there is a relatively cheap Upgrade Pack that you can buy to convert non-revised to revised.
Unfortunately however, it appears that Paizo doesn't stock this product. I know for a fact it exists though because my FLGS currently has one in stock. It is relatively cheap compared to the Game/Expansions).
EDIT: Ninja'd by taig...

Do you have 4th Edition un-revised?... I am unsure of the difference between the revised and unrevised.. most likely the revised added expansion capability... But there is a Talisman Upgrade Pack for those that have 4th edition unrevised. Paizo does not seem, but you may be able to find it at other locations on the web.
Edit: Was beaten!

The revision is some changes to the charcter cards to make things a bit more clear and gives you plastic characters to use rather than cardstock ones. It is a nicer game overall with the revisions and does reduce confusion. The upgrade package is worth getting.
