I love the game. There are some very active communities on the web, too. The development has changed hands, recently, as future BattleLore products will be issued by Fantasy Flight Games. They have an impressive track record with board games, so I wouldn't worry - they have already declared they will neither introduce yet another rules revision nor change the spirit of the game.
If you love strategic, tactical combat, this is for you.
