A good movie, though probably not worth $20

The Gamers was a short, fun little movie. If you enjoy D&D or RPGs in general, you'll get a kick out of what is here. Some might be turned off to know that this was shot with a cheaper video camera, but once it gets going, you get sucked in and forget about the low budget-ness of it. It's probably not worth $20 unless you're really interested in seeing this though. It has some cool extras, but The Gamers: Dorkness Rising is more worthy of the price it's being sold at.

Not as polished as the sequel, but a fantastic movie none the less. This should be required viewing for any RPG gamer.I would give it 5 stars but it is relatively short (~45 minutes) for a full priced DVD.

Everyone should see this that plays

I have been playing RPG's off and on for more than twenty years. My group loves this movie and never passes up a chance to watch it again. They love it when I include something from the movie in a game I'm running. They have fought the Shadow, been challenged by the Bandit King, and even backstabbed a party member with a balista. And the best part is this movie is quoted in every game no matter what. If you're a gamer and can't get past production value or quality of acting, you are missing the point.

Definitely one of the best gaming movies ever made.

The Gamers does for gaming something that Hollywood has proven completely incapable of, and that is deliver a movie that is both entertaining and respectful to its roots.

The only downsides to this movie, is that it is largely unapproachable to outsiders. The humor revolves around gaming inside jokes, and relies upon the viewer's experience at a gaming table.

Like others have stated....

If your not a gamer, you won't really care about this movie. Even as a gamer and DM, I could relate to the characters presented but didn't laugh my ass off at any one part. It was just an entertaining side trip that most game groups can relate to.

*( )( )( )( )

Not so much.

You know that one thing at that one gaming session you had that made everyone laugh. You know when you tell it to other people and they think its funny but not as funny as you did. Thats about where this sits. I had a 12 hour shift to kill and I would have rather have been staring blankly into space than to have watched this.

An Instant Classic!

This movie is fabulous if you can get past the cheesy low-budget special effects (not a problem for my group of die-hard B-movie fans).

After showing it to my gaming group, it has rapidly become the most quoted movie at our gaming table, even surpassing "Monty Python and the Holy Grail!"

Great Movie! Just don't try to send fan-mail...

I’m a long time Dungeon Master/Storyteller (working on 26 years now). Hands down this video is mandatory viewing for my fellow DM’s. Like another review stated, if you’re not a person who knows about D&D or have never been a DM, then you’ll be clueless to most of the humor. But if you have DM’d or have a good background with D&D, this movie is going to be a ‘fantastic’ and ‘hilarious’ journey. I completely understand that budget mandates goodies/extras as well as special effects within the movie; however in this case, the whole sense of the movie is more genuine because of the bad effects. Now that there’s a DVD out that has “Family Friendly” viewing options, my step-son will be allowed to play the movie at his gaming school function; I’m so proud of’m :-).

On a more negative note, if you’re a fan like I am, you’ll find out that trying to contact the cast, crew, or even try to utilize the web-posted ‘contact’ altogether are dead-ends. I’ve sent email; with a non-existing mailer daemon, I tried again via email with no response. I called via the phone number listed and left a voice mail – no callback. I even went as far as writing a letter and mailing it to the address listed on the official web site…again…no answer. So…I’m sure they like the fact that they have fans. And I’m sure they like our money…but don’t expect to get any kind of response when attempting to make contact directly (even the posted methods listed on: http://www.the-gamers.com/contact/).

Other than blowing-off their fans – EXCELLENT MOVIE and more importantly – GAME ON!!!!

For the person who likes

I bought the original VHS of this back in the day. Then got the DVD. The VHS was hard to swallow for me because there were no special features in it to speak of. I hoped that the DVD would at least have the Dead Gentlemen signature blooper reel. I was not let down as the features were JAM PACKED. It was everything I wanted and stuff I wanted after I watched it.
With that out of the way, this new DVD provides nothing new to top that. A few revamped special effects definitely helps the visual appeal, a few good skits, and Revamping Doyle. This DVD should have been Dead Gentlemen Rehash (No that's not a bad thing). With the long awaited Revamping Doyle, the online podcast show that they promised would be on DVD, and a sketch that never made it to air but was funny anyways... it really is a good addition to the set of DG DVDs I have. However, if you're just a fan of the Gamers and wish to have a really in depth DVD on just that... go with the other one that's available.
