Flames of War: D-Day—The Campaign for Normandy (June–August 1944)
D-Day is our first Campaign Book. It is an introduction to the Normandy Campaign from D-Day, 6 June 1944, to the liberation of Paris on 25 August 1944, plus a resource of gaming rules and ideas to allow you to really get your teeth into playing Flames Of War in Normandy! The book contains:
As you can see, there are no new organisations or units and only a couple of new pieces of equipment because that is not what this book is about. It's all about setting the scene and gaming in Normandy (at least a tabletop representation of it!). We'll have a whole raft of Battle Books coming out over the next few years to give you more companies to field. Of course Festung Europa covers all the basic units. This book is about playing games in Normandy. It is about setting the scene for the next few years of Flames Of War and giving you a whole new environment to game in and new challenges to overcome! Setting the Scene The book contains a pocket history of D-day and the subsequent three month long campaign to break out of Normandy. There are many places you can go for more detail on the campaign, but I think our writers have done an excellent job of summarising the whole campaign in eight pages. Every major American, British and German operation is covered along with the way they related to each other and to the bigger picture. All-in-all, it is an excellent place to start if you are new to this fascinating campaign. Amphibious Assaults What would D-Day be without the landings. The new mission allows you to storm the beaches of Normandy: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. Can you get ashore fast enough and in sufficient strength to breach Hitler's Atlantikwall and capture your objectives inland before the inevitable counterattack arrives? The scenarios for Sword and Utah Beaches give you the opportunity to command the actual forces that landed there or the outnumbered defenders, fighting to hold their positions against the inrushing Allied tide. The scenarios guarantee tense games as the fate of the United Nations hangs in the balance. Hedgerow Hell Once ashore, the Allied forces found themselves enmeshed in a maze of impenetrable hedgerows called the Bocage. Here visibility extended to the edge of the next field and massive stone-banked hedgerows rendered tanks impotent. Can you adapt to this new form of fighting where all the old tactics fail and new ones must be found? Are you flexible enough to master this new battlefield? Campaigns The book contains two new Axis of Attack campaigns: Cutting the Cotentin and The Br ville Gap. The Cotentin campaign follows on from the landing at Utah as the US forces fight their way across the Cotentin Peninsula to cut off Cherbourg prior to its capture. Here time is against the US forces. Can you cut the peninsula before the Germans can reinforce Cherbourg? On the British flank, the paras struggled to hold back the German counterattack at the Br ville Gap. With multiple axes of attack, winning a battle can still leave you outflanked and forced to fall back if the neighbouring unit loses. No matter what, they must hold the Orne bridges and protect the British flank. Can you do it? I'm sure you'll have as much fun as us playing these campaigns! You'll find that D-Day is festooned with great gaming resources that will enhance your gaming experience and entice you in to trying something new!
