The complete collection of Hok the Mighty stories is now available!

There is something fun and refreshing about following the exploits of a sword-toting barbarian who charges head-first through of variety of adventures without stopping to ruminate on conundrums of the day. Manly Wade Wellman created seven tales of this early caveman whose exploits were modeled after the tales of Hercules. Battle in the Dawn: The Complete Hok the Mighty brings these stories of the first human hero together for the first time, allowing a new generation to thrill to the exploits of the mighty Hok!

In the 1930s, an unusual tale appeared in the influential Amazing Stories magazine. Unlike the usual yarns of robots and interstellar travel, "Battle in the Dawn" featured the brutal exploits of Hok, humanity's first hero. Written by Pulitzer Prize-nominee Manly Wade Wellman (Who Fears the Devil?), who would later achieve fame for his American folktales of Silver John and beat out William Faulkner for a prestigious writing award, this hit story spawned several additional adventures, in which Hok battles unrelenting cavemen, explores lost Atlantis, discovers new technology, and charts a new destiny for humanity.

Now, for the first time ever, Paizo's Planet Stories presents a complete authorized collection of all of Wellman's rare Hok the Mighty tales, including an unfinished story fragment and a brand-new introduction by Wellman's longtime friend, fantasy author David Drake.

This will sound like a petty kvetch, I know, but why is Hok shown with a sword when I remember that he mainly used a giant club a la Hercules in the stories?

That quibble aside, yay for finally getting this book out! I've been looking forward to it so very much.

Perhaps you haven't yet read "Hok and the Gift of Heaven"? ;-) Granted the craftsmanship of the sword is a bit more advanced than I would have imagined, but then the cover illo is meant to be symbolic of Hok leading humanity's evolutionary charge, so I can see why the artist made that choice.

I really think this one was worth waiting for--hope you enjoy it and let us know what you thought of the book over here!

Thanks for the response, sorry I missed it and foolishly repeated the question elsewhere. And no, I never read "Hok and the Gift of Heaven", but I intend to soon enough!
