Open Design's latest book gives you a sandbox campaign set in the forest!

My gaming group is just starting to get into the wonders that are the Kingmaker Adventure Path. One thing that became abundantly clear to me early on is that since my group consists of 6 PCs and a couple of NPCs, I'm going to need more adventure encounters to give the characters the experience they need to survive. So I was looking through the various d20 products lining my library shelves for some adventure tidbits when Open Design's latest release, Tales of the Old Margreve, came across my desk. Paging through the book, my prayers were answered with a plethora of forest-based adventures, sites, monsters and other goodies that I could easily drop into my Kingmaker campaign. On top of that, the Old Margreve is a wonderfully spooky place which should add some atmosphere to the forest near Oleg's Trading Post.

Tales of the Old Margreve contains 8 eerie forest adventures for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game in a unique Old World setting inspired by the medieval folktales and superstitions of Eastern Europe. Authors include Paizo regulars Tim Connors and Richard Pett, among others.

Here in the Old Margreve Forest, heroes trek past crumbled griffon towers, over stiles and shepherds' fields, to where the lonely road thins and branches under the dark canopy of the trees. Deep in the forest's misty hollows, you may hear the rusalka's song rising over the crackle of a midnight fire or glimpse the white flash of a deer centaur's tail as it vanishes between the trees.

Inside you'll find 8 adventures for player characters of 1st to 10th level; dozens of Margreve sites, inhabitants and adventure hooks; 12 unsettling new monsters; new spells and incantations; and unexpected powers wielded by the living forest itself!

Open Design's Chief Kobold Wolfgang Baur thinks it's some of the best Pathfinder RPG–compatible material he's done, and he's supporting it with a couple of add-ons: The Tales of the Old Margreve Web Compilation PDF contains 14 pages of goodies that he had to cut from the print edition, and Ashton Sperry has a set of Tales of the Old Margreve Paper Miniatures. And readers of Kobold Quarterly #15 will be rewarded with tie-ins to the "Children of the Wood" article and the "Amber Heart" mini-adventure in that issue.

Nice more 3pp love with more store blogs.

I have to agree with Wolfgang's assessment. I haven't finished the book yet, but I'm already brimming with ideas for my next campaign after reading the forest gazetteer. One thing that's great for example, is that each entry in the gazetteer has an adventure hook attached to it. As if the adventures themselves weren't enough already!

Now to find a suitable place for the Margreve in Golarion. Oleg's Trading Post you say? I haven't read Kingmaker (since I'm hoping a friend of mine will run that once we finish Council of Thieves!) so I don't know anything about that place. I'll have a look through my copy of the River Kingdoms though.

Yep, fits in with any Temperate Forest, and with Oleg's Trading Post especially.

It's heavy on hooks and surprises for players who have seen it all. The Zmey... Well, there's one more surprise coming for that one.

Its nice to see this getting some quick attention. There's some good stuff in Tales of the Old Margreve.

Wolfgang's got the minis sent off to Paizo; with luck, they'll be up very, very soon. A Huge-sized reason to buy this set:

3.D. MINI.

Personally, I figured it'd be easy to get ahead with those guys. :P

God, I'm clever.

Minis are up, and linked in the Paizo Store Blog above. HOORAY!

Minis are pretty sweet. I need to post a pic of the 3D dragon as soon as I can build one, though. People won't believe the sweet until they see the sweet.

Pre-Ordered the Print Edition but it would be nice if the PDF was immediately available for free to those that prefer the whacked tree version. As it is, I have to wait for the pre-order book before I can run the thing. I consider that a major negator.

Zuxius, less beer and more patronage memberships ;)

I agree, then you could have *playtested* parts of it.

Agree, patrons get the PDF in playtest form, and early access to all the design decisions. The PDF is sent to patrons first, before it goes up on Paizo or anywhere.

Patronage has its perks.

Got my print edition yesterday and it is gorgeous. (Although, to be fair, I did contribute some content.) I can't wait to send my players into a forest that holds some major surprises for even old and jaded gamers like me. Kudos to Tim and Eileen and all the patrons for putting together some fabulous ideas!
