Kobold Quarterly #14 focuses on treasure in fantasy RPGs!

Can you believe that Kobold Quarterly has reached the ripe old age of 14 issues? It seems like only yesterday that friend of the company Wolfgang Baur brought over the first issue of KQ and we all feverishly pored over its contents. Today, KQ is all grown up and shiny, and if Kobold Quarterly #14 is any indication, it has a long and bright future ahead of it!

Speaking of shiny, treasure is the theme for this huge 96-page Gen Con issue. Paizo's own James Sutter wrote an article statting out come of the cool new magic items and spells found in our first Pathfinder Tales novel, Prince of Wolves, including stats for Radovan, the tiefling bodyguard. There are also articles about magical perfumes, paper treasures, middle-class magic, figurines of wondrous power, and hoard magic! Feature articles include a piece about using Aasimars as a PC race for 4E, an ecology of the Tengu co-written by Paizo's own James Jacobs, new paladin powers, and an article on taking the 4E skill challenge mechanics onto the battlefield.

And that's still just scratching the surface! There's an article on paladin codes; Ed Greenwood talks about making memorable characters; Michael Kortes reveals the secrets of ancient tongues; Monte Cook looks at the classic war that wages in a GMs head between story and letting the dice lie where they roll; and Tim & Eileen Connors weave a mini-adventure, "The Amber Heart," for the Pathfinder RPG. And there's much, much more!

If you haven't picked up Kobold Quarterly in a while, you should do yourself a favor and check out this packed Gen Con issue! Now I'm off to add riffle scrolls into my Kingmaker campaign!

That treasure article sounds really interesting...

Given that these periodicals are pdf-capable, when the 50th (or 100th) issue is released, will there be the possibility of a "Grand collection", with all of them lumped together that will be purchasable?

Just finished reading mine. (well skipping the 4x articles).

Guys, this is chock full of good, yummy Pathfinder content. Best of all.. all those funky items in Prince of Wolves? They're in the magazine in game terms. (Are they OGL? I'm not sure)

That was one of the things I always loved about Dragon when it was being published. Their "Silicon Sorcery" articles where they would equate other things from various sources into D&D terms, on the off-chance that you might find them relevant.

The Chocobo entry made my month.

I'm glad they're doing the same in KQ.

Does the Prince of Wolves article have spoilers for the novel?

rocks fall everyone dies. ;-)

Seriously, the only spoilers are in the mechanics, so unless you're less than halfway through the book, you should be fine.

I am excited to know what everyone thought about the Tengu Ecology article I submitted. :D Good or bad, give it to me true. ;)

Xidoraven, I liked the Ecology, and I also liked James Jacobs giving the official scoop on tengu in Golarion.

Maybe a bit of a sneak preview for Tian Xia? Hard to say, really, at this point, though I know Dave Gross is already working on the novel... In any case, thanks James!

Thanks, Wolfgang - and I loved the fact that Golarion's canon was included. This was very much oriented around them as they were presented in the Pathfinder Bestiary, and which was a truly unique take on the mythological creature concept. That was why I was so happy to write about it, and I'm glad that the inspiration was bettered by something ordered... or 'canon', rather. I honestly need to talk with Doug more before I really know enough about the setting to understand all of James' blurb, however. :P It was good, and I am certainly glad that mine was edited and his own included - it made it all that much better and more proper to the ideas and activities of the setting.

All of the accompanying web articles related to tengu seem to be up now too, and it's worth linking to them all here as well:

For the record, I listened to two separate players last night at our evening weeknight PFS game rant for a minute about how we need to see cool new PFS material including things 'like this' and pointing at the KQ magazine I showed him for the first time. lol - I was amused, and I agree. I certainly hope that the inspiration was there for the ecology and Golarion canon to mix better than oil and water (*rolls eyes, and avoids puns*). I will personally look into finding resources and story hooks related to Tian Xia now, so I can put in a PFS mod for the open call. That way I can even make sure to let them know that someone is on the job to make their musings (loud and boastful, mind you) are being carried out. It was amusing, and a good feeling. I think it was the good artwork and seeing James' name nearby that was truly affecting him. ;)
