My wife loves the creature companion rules. 5 stars for that alone.

5/5

Wohoo for Starfinder's first CR 25 creature :D

5/5

So the capstone for monster statblocks has been reached and we finally know what sort of creature players could fight on ground, but would
most likely still wipe them out at level 20 :D(APL +3 is epic level encounter, meaning system wise CR 23 is highest level threat that is still plausible for PCs to defeat. Which means CR 24 is impossibly hard and CR 25 is straight up unfair unless there is something to buff PCs or weaken the enemy)

Not sure what capstones are really left. Dead Sun's part 6 had max Tier 20 starship statblock so both combat system's max strength level is now accounted for. I guess only thing missing is Tier 20 Starship Monster maybe?

Anyhoo, this book has tons of cool stuff :3 Most of the new races are bit wackier than in previous two books, but they are all charming as hell. This book also teaches tidbits like Vesk-2 having population of intelligent squids(one of the playable races), having exploding snails AND large bipedal badger like animals that vesk consider a status symbol to have as a mount or pet. I guess even vesk appreacite the honey badgers :D I also liked some of the mechanical gimmicks, like shakalta being always multiclassed and having to take classes in order.

Hard to pick a favourite from the new races since all of them are great. I guess from more serious ones, Shatori have great tragedy to them as immortal but sterile species who have been vassalized by azlanti star empire(and know they can't risk fighting back). Oh yeah, some of the new races are either conquered by azlanti star empire or vesk :D And two of them are from pact worlds. So it was great for expanding the known parts of setting again.

...Anyway back to topic, from more silly races I think my favourite might actually be telia(I find dromada to be funniest though just because they look bit like jar jar so lots of people cringe at the picture little :D). They aren't actually particularly funny, but they are straight up turtles. Anyway, they have great old people dignitity to them as 1000 year old living races of story tellers :D I love their optimistic philosophy on life

Now onto the non player races: I was positively surprised by this having lots of Drift native monsters :D I also love creatures with abstract shapes like Time Eater and Drift Architect. We don't have too many of those yet, only other one I can think of is the one with geometric shapes from Dawn of Flame part 6(that one was great :D The NG Gargantuan one! I should write their name down!) Spektra are pretty cool too and so were Driftdead (especially the amalgam) creepy.

Philosopher Worm(Lawful Good) is one of my favourite creatures in book because I love the trend of Hylax's servitor creatures looking stereotypically evil or scary bugs to human eyes :D Plus who doesn't like philosophers?

I love that Thorgothrels returned from Iron Gods bestiary :D Those things were pretty memorable encounter back in that AP when I run the optional side dungeon.

If I have to be negative about something, there being seven star metal dragons means we only got brief sentence about their personality so they don't have lots of identity yet. Especially since only one was pictured out of seven.

Its nice that trolls returned, but seems like they haven't started to use technology much :D I guess they got brought out of golarion by unethical companies for sapient creature experimenting with their regeneration so thats why they haven't culturally changed much.

I wonder if Tripods still come from Mars :D And I find it cool that they also work as vehicles. Tripods are in general cool.

On rest of the creatures I consider to be high lights of the book, but have to avoid the word limit, I'll just list there: Diaspora Wyrm, Gwahled, Oracle of Oras, Tzitzimitl, Valkyrie(specifically the vesk valkyrie art, more non human traditional outsiders are cool) and Vorthuul.

(I also found Kami, Wollipeds and Yithians returning cool and Equinoxian, Ferrofluid Ooze, Flayer Leech, Giant Space Tardigrade, Paraforans(<3), Neutronium Golemz, Quantum oozes, Stridermancers, new Swarm and Weaponized toys cool as well :'D But there isn't space to talk about ALL creatures in the review and there literally isn't creature in the book that I didn't like. Its kinda 3 tier system, 1 what I consider high lights of the book out of stuff I loved or found cool 2 is stuff I loved or found cool and 3 is rest of the stuff I liked, but were beaten by other two tiers.)

Okay, let's hope I have space for talking about pets before I run out of word count: EMPATHNIDs AND PROOGs ARE CUTESTS THINGS EVER. I love the friend spiders and pet oozes :D

On topic of "What next?", what I personally would like next is aboleths to make a return along with new creatures created/engineered/uplifted/enslaved/breeded/mutated/altered by them :D I would also like more fiends to come back, I'm still missing my qlippoths, rakshasas, asuras and daemons.

Any hypothetical new creatures I would like to see? Hmm... Well, I guess I'd like to see more new takes on old scifi cliches or weird combinations of creatures. Like, Starfinder has decent amount of alien parasites that take control of your body, so having friendly symbiont creature or even friendly parasite would be cool. Also more silicon or non carbon based lifeforms is always cool :D

...Wait this was only about 923 words? Geez, I could have spent more time on gushing about empathnids...(ALSO HAH, this time I saved the review in advance! So you won't win this time the review disappearing bug because I wrote it for too long time!) Edit: Crap, had to edit 5 stars back in because review disappearing bug meant also rating got reset'd :P

Sounds nice. Good to see more weird and wacky playable races coming with that swarm race. Any chance that living hologram gets a PC option?

If so, how do you get around being tethered to a projector?

Ooh, playable swarm! I wonder how armor works there. I wonder if I can cast polymorph to pretend to be humanoid? Surprise people by letting the spell expire?

Oh goody! Another Alien Archive! Will be worth every month in wait! Will the Beginner Box and AA3 be the only rulebooks this year, or should we expect something in December?

I thought it would be kind of cool to play a sentient virus that could bodyhop and take control of individual host constructs, but Starfinder PCs tend to be way too invested in their own personal bodies for that to work. Actually, since this book is introducing creature companions (finally, finally! :D ), it would be the coolest thing have a living hologram as a construct companion that can hitch a ride in a portable computer or comm unit. Oh yeah, we're going straight up Cortana & Chief with this ruleset.

Also, Lying Cat-esque alien and more Preluria lore maaaaybe?

Sapient swarm race? Does Paizo have a direct link to my subconscious?

I wonder if we'll finally get Sazaron and Dirindi stats this time.

To be far exo-mechanics do this already.

Kind of, except Exocortex isn't really something that can act on its own initiative or leave your person, nor is it sentient. Other people can't even interact with it. And we totally need Sazarons and Dirindis. With Sazarons having racial "mount" abilities that they never let anybody use. :P

Hey, if the living hologram did get a PC option, that would mean being able to play as one of the few excellent parts of Voyager!!

Animal companions! Mounts! A playable swarm! Bioluminescence!

Yup, I'm already hyped.

Nice.

Nothing in the rules says exocortexes can't interact with others. Again, how much independent personality it has is up to the player/GM. Still, I could go for a more explicit Cortana/MC analogue.

Starfinder Core Rulebook, pg.69 wrote:
You begin play with an exocortex, an artificial processor that interacts with and augments your biological brain’s cognitive functions, which can aid you in a variety of tasks, from combat to digital infiltration. Your exocortex is implanted within your physical body or brain, similar to a piece of cybernetic hardware, allowing your AI to access your mind and feed you information. As you gain levels, your exocortex advances in sophistication and processing power—see Exocortex. Only you can access or interact with your exocortex.

Eh, a little hard to say. It sounds plausible that this might only be referring to interactions that grant mechanical benefits, although the wording of the text doesn’t guarantee a player can do this, especially if the text is strictly interpreted. The previous section in the Mechanic writeup, “Artificial Intelligence,” also explicitly states the Mechanic’s Exocortex/Drone is not self-aware. Regardless, there’s definitely a Cortana/EDI/Handsome Jack/Joi/Voyager’s “The Doctor”-sized niche in Starfinder itching to be realized and this book seems like the perfect opportunity to knock it out of the park.

Oh man, a HAL 9000/GLADOS/SHODAN villain would be the best thing. I’m a little surprised Starfinder hasn’t done as much with AI stuff yet - no killer robot horde or malevolent viral computer-based intelligence under galactic threats, or rogue AIs that can hack or infect a party’s tech gear or nearby constructs (nor any sentient construct creature without a robot body, save for the Living Hologram), AI companions, Tron-esque virtual worlds (Triaxus had something similar to this), etc. I’d love to see a secretive, underground kingdom on some planet’s Infosphere dark net inhabited entirely by sentient programs, capable of digitizing organics’ bodies or themselves inhabiting artificial forms to interact with the outside world. Like a sci-fi spin on visitations to the First World. Lots to do with the new technological possibilities now possible in the Golarion campaign setting. Can’t wait to see what Paizo’s got cooking next!

Zaister wrote:

Those two are probably covered pretty well under existing rules for artificial personalities, I’d think.

Oh geez. Evidently I’m slow. :p Good one. But yes, to clarify: Cortana the fictional AI character from Halo games, not the Microsoft virtual assistant. I’ve totally wanted something like the former as a party companion in Starfinder since before this game was even released. Like a futuristic familiar.

Oh, maybe it's me who's slow. I didn't know those games had a character by that name. So it's a case of Microsoft stealing from themselves, interesting. :)

There is a player option, but it's not racial traits for playing one...

If you want a sneak preview of living holograms, that creature in particular is an expansion on the entry in Starfinder Adventure Path #4: The Ruined Clouds!

On the AA2 thread you made the same response when people mentioned tieflings and cat people from Vesk-6 so... sazarons and dirindi confirmed in AA3, perhaps.

Ah man, Joe. EVERY time I think I’ve reached peak excitement for a book, you people give us one blurb and all of a sudden I’m excited all over again. Loved your Starfinder Wednesday appearance, btw. Vanguard is probably my favourite new class so far. Been itching to make a comic book style fist-fighting brawler for a while now, and that class is everything I had hoped for. Will any of the new aliens incorporate grafts from the new classes? I can totally see a Sorazon vanguard wrecking house.

What are Dirindi and Sazaron? I have never heard of them and google is no help.

I hoped for a spaceships/mechs/tanks book next.
Well, AA3 will be fun like the first two (a Nuar and Verthani are PCs in my group right now and a uplifted bear and an orc are the newest connections of them), but I have to say it: there are so many topics we can expand regarding spaceships and spacebattle.

E.g.: additionales shipframes
or several ships for the PCs (Fighters in a bay?)
Or what about a neural Interface for the Pilots with high IN and low DEX…
Switch bays for additional weapons, so perhaps a Option for three weapons in one area...

And regarding mechs - the Next step would be Transformers: mech now - spaceship later :)

"Three-eyed, electrically attuned humanoids" & centaur-like creatures with "humanoid torsos and four-legged saurian bodies." They jointly run the government for the Pact World Arkanen, and are probably the only major Pact World species that haven't been statted yet. Kind of important, because it's hard to run adventures on Arkanen or Osoro (the former the largest hub of mystical universities in the Pact Worlds, and the latter a sort of overrun Jurassic Park with a poisonous atmosphere) without them. So this book seems pretty indispensable, especially if you've had plans for a while to make a Technomancer Foaly from Artemis Fowl! I notice Irokiroi are also here from Osoro - very fun!

Hmm

Glad the vanguard is scratching that itch! I'm really looking forward to the characters people come up with...

Alien Archive 3 aliens won't have the new class grafts; we'll still be hard at work on the Character Operations Manual when we send that batch of critters off to the printer. (Which is a bit of a shame, because several of the new playable species pair especially well with the new classes!)

Ooo...If Living Holograms end up being combatant companions, this might solve the problem of how they might remain mobile and manifest with a party that’s not carrying around extra expensive tech. In their writeup in Dead Suns AA, hologram entities are bound to their projector, so if this is an item in AA3, you’d literally be carrying around a piece of technology that is often used for storing Living Holograms.

It's more likely that you carry around something like a shield projector or Summon Creature simulator based on living holograms.

Very hyped for this, especially given the possibility of dirindi & sazarons.

The idea of a playable swarm is very interesting, as well.

I don't think the intention is that they have an Advanced Races Guide style race builder (but it would be cool if they did). Rather, they're including rules for animal companions/familiars as backmatter and there are over a dozen playable races in the book itself.
