The Worst in Others

As the War for the Crown escalates, General Pythareus—Princess Eutropia's rival for the throne—plots to plunge the nation into war, threatening to kill thousands of people to rally others to him. From the fortress—city of Zimar, he commands the overwhelming army of Taldor, as well as one of the most ruthless spymasters the world has ever known. Even with the resources of the legendary Lion Blades to aid them, can the PCs hope to outmaneuver conspiracy and prevent the War for the Crown from becoming a war between nations, or will Taldor again descend into a thousand years of violence?

This volume of Pathfinder Adventure Path continues the War for the Crown Adventure Path and includes:

  • "City in the Lion's Eye," a Pathfinder RPG adventure for 10th—level characters, by Mikko Kallio.
  • A gazetteer of the city of Zimar, the fortified heart of Taldor's military, by Mikko Kallio.
  • A profile of the Lion Blades, masters of disguise and the most feared spies of the Inner Sea, by Liz Smith.
  • Eight of the deadliest rakshasas found within the Inner Sea region for use as an adventure supplement or in any campaign, by Eleanor Ferron.
  • A collection of strange beasts that prowl southern Taldor, from the invulnerable chitikin to the immolating pyrogeist, by Mike Headley, Mikko Kallio, Joe Kondrak, and Kalervo Oikarinen.

Sir Pett and intrigue? Who saw this coming? I DID.

Is it May '18 yet?

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 32

I thought Mikko was slated to be the author for this one?

Mmm. I'm looking forward to more details about Zimar.

Even if the art isn't final, that's a really weird choice for a placeholder if there's no Tians involved in the events. Hopefully "one of the most ruthless spymasters the world has ever known" is not the so-cliche-even-parodies-cant-pull-it-off Asian assassin lady.

That's right, I wrote this one (and the placeholder cover does seem to have my name on it), while Mr. Pett wrote book 2. It was an honor to work with him and share ideas with him; he's a great author and person.

The placeholder art is from Inner Sea Intrigue, p. 36, and it depicts a Lion Blade agent. As the product description suggests, Lion Blades are featured in the adventure, so I think it makes sense to use that picture as a placeholder.

(Edited) The spymaster is most certainly not a Tien assassin lady.

I believe the saying is 'Aw shucks Mikko' and that goes both ways, a great team on this AP and it was indeed great fun to bounce ideas about. I think you lovely folks will be mightily pleased with it.

The old dude with an axe? Should be Zimar's leader Maxillar Pythareus, one of Eutropia's rivals.

Huh. Thought he was a bit younger?

Hmm is that night hag in the background or some sort of horned rakshasa?

Dark Archive

That is Night Hag definitely

I thought the same of Eutropia, but alas, she's in her upper thirties already as well.

Could it be Kol Kodranson? Old dude is definitely Ulfen Guard.

Considering author of the book already stated it is Pythareus, most likely not :p

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's Pythareus.

Huh, realized I haven't yet gotten email about this product being pending or shipped, is there some sort of vacation week going on?

Silver Crusade

Order authorization spawns were delayed until Monday.

Grand Lodge

Yep, just got my email on the 14th.

Well I hope that means we'll get some info on famous rakashas soon...

Dark Archive

So anyone got there subscirber PDF copy yet?

Not yet here, but very much looking forward to it (for myself and my players, one of which has been wanting more info on the Lion Blades since I first started planning to run this, and another who is a huge fan of rakshasas)!

I'll be happy to do the preview info thing as soon as I get mine.

So...anyone have this yet?

Not yet, I added a bunch of stuff to this month though so I'm not expecting them to get to it right away. :-)

Well I was more expecting Skeld, than you, Captain...

No but it seems that way to me.

Also does this mean you got it then Corvus?

Dark Archive

Pathfinder Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Not currently, but I did use to get them before Skeld before I also started subscribing to Starfinder APs <_< Dunno if that is coincidence or if two products get shipped slower

Paizo Employee Developer

I'll write a mini-"review" on the non-adventure parts once it drops (I'm saving my full reviews for after I run that section of the AP).

I don't expect any new mechanics for Lion Blade PCs, but I've held off using my Gencon Rebuild Boon for a couple months on my Lion Blade just incase we get some new gear or something. I know people have asked for the wrist-mounted dagger in the art for a while.

Kitsune W,

Any chance we can get a look at the bestiary then?

Chitikin (CR 4 N Large vermin) - Black arthropod with poison and attack that panics

Hyaleth (CR 10 N Large aberration) - Giant tentacled leech with the ability to digest bodies AND thoughts

Plant monsters of Taldor - Blood algae swarm (CR 8) and carrion creeper (CR 10)

Pyrogeist (CR 10 CE Large undead) - Ghostly fire with faces with breath weapon and pyrokinetic whirlwind

Rakshasa, zalyakavat (CR 13 LE Medium outsider) - Humanoid shape with green skin and shrew-like snout

Paizo Employee Developer

Mine just shipped a few minutes ago. I'm a big lion blade fan, so I've been really excited about this book.

Zalyakavat specialize in the Urumi, which is cool. Love that weapon.

Two new Rogue talents in the Lion Blade Articles that help them qualify for the Lion Blade prestige class. Neither of them actually grant you any new abilities, they just help you bypass the Sneak Attack or Inspire Competence prerequisite, which does let rogues like Phantom Thief's qualify as Lion Blades.

I have some problems with one of the NPC stat blocks in the book, though.

Spoiler:
Kathann Zalar

I can understand not wanting to use Unchained Rogue since it means we have to have an entirely different book, but it really diminishes her potential having to take Weapon Finesse manually.

Why bother with the Bardic Pretender rogue talent? The Deadly Courtesan archetype is only for Vishkanya and allows a Vishkanya like Katann to qualify for Lion Blade after 5 levels!

How can she have any bardic performance rounds? Neither the prestige class and rogue talent grant it, which is why you'd want to take Deadly Courtesan. And 20 rounds of bardic performance? This seems to infer that Lion Blade grants you bardic performance rounds as a bard if you qualify for Lion Blade using the new Rogue Talent, but the talent says "this talent doesn't grand her the bardic performance ability" and the Lion Blade class doesn't specify how many performances you get per day (which can change depending on your source of performance).

If she went Deadly Courtesan Rogue 5/Lion Blade 7 she'd have 16...If you dipped a level in bard in lieu of that 5th level of Rogue, you'd have 37 rounds...

I'm glad to see Unexpected Suggestion listed as a Supernatural Ability on page 57, even if it's listed as a Spell-Like Ability on page 56.

Overall I love the Lion Blade information, and the Rakshasa Information. I haven't read the adventure yet, but the extra info in this book is solid, despite my (very) minor quibbles.

Got this pdf today as well but haven't had time to check it out yet :'D And now its really late over here but I'm still gonna skim it

I'm curious about the Rakasha's focus: IE does it want magic, martial arts, what?

It wants to fight. Martial arts.
