Fantasy roleplaying adventure in a dark world of deep magic, inspired by the myths and folklore of Eastern and Central Europe.

It is an age of war. Civilization slowly gives way to encroaching wilderness, and once-mighty empires now lie beneath the waves. Only magic and the warmth of hope keeps lights aglow when dread things prowl, and priestly wardings are bent by demonic rage.

The omens are dire. The roads to the shadow realm are open again, and the fey have returned to claim their ancient tribute. In the north the giants prepare for Ragnarok, while the goblins in the west grow restless. In the Crossroads, the shadow of the vampire princes falls across the land. The World Serpent is stirring—and not even all-knowing Baba Yaga can say what will happen next.

Note:The Midgard Worldbook is compatible with 5th Edition, and also compatible with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. Separate appendixes provide the needed GM-specific material for the game, and the Pantheon chapter addresses casters in each system separately.

Now more than ever, Midgard needs heroes to stand against the dark, driving it back with spell, steel, and cunning!

Honestly I'm glad I haven't pre-ordered. I'd love to support Midgard, but with PathFinder 2.0 on the horizon...I'd rather wait out for another revision that might be supporting Pathfinder 2.0 since I will be migrating. I will not be selling off my 1.0 collection though.

Dark Archive

This is a system-neutral book, so you should be OK with PF 2e. I plan to use it as a campaign setting for new playtest.

Grand Lodge

Do they have a release date I just want to get it because it is 5E compatible and I like Midgard. I will most likely sell off my Pathfinder 1E collection and have not decided whether to get into 2E or not have to wait and see what they do with it.

I'll definitely be ordering this book soon, as well as the Player's Guide.

Liberty's Edge

As others have correctly pointed out, the Midgard Worldbook offered here is a massive book which details the Midgard campaign setting and it is indeed system neutral !!

If you play 5E, you can also pick up the 5E companion book, the Midgard Heroes Handbook which is packed with 5E class info, domains, spells, etc tailored to Midgard.

If you play Pathfinder, you can also pick up the Pathfinder RPG companion book, the Midgard Player's Guide which is filled with that same kind of crunch for Pathfinder!

Dark Archive

Mine is due to arrive Monday. I kickstarted the project and can't wait to see the results.

Awesome!

Please consider posting a review once you've had a chance to digest it :)

The announcement of PF2 actually has me eyeballing this again. I always ran PF1 with 3pp or homebrew settings, never was a Golarion person. I don't mind the design principles I can glean from the PF2 announcements so far, but it seems like Golarion will be more wed to the system. That gives me uncertainty about where I'm going to land. A setting book that promises to be mostly system neutral becomes very appealing, especially since the two systems it contains some crunch for are ones I'm strongly considering (PF1 and D&D5). Especially with additional player crunch available in separate hardcovers whether I choose D&D or PF.

I'm eager to read a comparison of this product with the 2012 campaign setting hardcover, which I have as a PDF. It's a really beautiful setting. It's diverse but not kitchen-sinky which makes it feel less gamey and more lived in. I really love it.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Like DMG above I use a lot of 3PP and homebrew stuff in my games. I have no real interest in the world of Golarion but the Midgard setting is as close as I'd come to running a published world. I cherry pick a LOT from the books I have and can't wait to lay my hands on this and the Player's Guide. I just have to scratch up the money for the hardbacks.

Marc, I was going to cancel my Paizo order to order through Kobold Press to get the Print+PDF but my book shipped before the order could be canceled. Any chance I can get the PDF somehow?

Throw me a line and I'll get you the PDF. But... Shouldn't Paizo be delivering your Worldbook with your order?

I'll be getting the physical book, but that it since this isn't a combo deal.

I sent you a PM on Facebook, check your 'Other' folder.

No worries, I'm sure Wolfgang will get you straightened out!

Hmmm ... that IS kind of odd that Paizo is only selling the print book, and not the PDF and Print/PDF combo as well ...

Liberty's Edge

Anxious to see the first reviews on this meaty tome!

The Exchange Kobold Press

Huh. Something is wrong on the Paizo side, then: they've had the PDF for a while now, and a bundle should be available.

Scarab Sages Webstore Coordinator

Print/PDF Bundle now available!

The Exchange Kobold Press

Thank you, Rick!

Wolfgang, I sent you a private message on Facebook about getting the PDF being that I ordered the book before the combo deal was an option.

I've only had time to sift through this awesomely massive tome, but so far I love it.

I've only dabbled in Midgard prior to this release, so I was looking forward to diving into the setting head first. I am a World Junkie.

I read the first 50 or so pages and then read a page or two here and there as time allowed. Mind=Blown

I loved how you constructed the history around the Elven invasion and then retreat, the giant mage war, and putting in the kinds of countries and states one would expect to evolve in a magic-rich fantasy setting.

My only quibble, and it is only a quibble, is I did not like the layout of the timeline on the bottom of the pages. I prefer the two-column approach as I find that easier to digest and cross-reference when I'm researching.

I'll pop back in as I get through it.

I am not sure the Midgard Worldbook can be adequately reviewed as anything other than fantasy fiction. It is an awesome piece of literature. I got the PDF when I was having some problems following the game logic of the Midgard Player’s Guide. If I ever GM a home group again, primarily a PFS player, I will set my home campaign in Midgard specifically the Duchy of Dornig. This is a very rich campaign setting.

Congrats on a great acheivement.

Thank you to everyone who has commented, and yeah, we're trying to make it stand out enough that it draws people to put down PFS for a night and play something that is open to homebrew and new directions.

Dornig is a personal favorite for me as well, just because it *seems* so civilized and safe. (Until you get to know the place!)

Really good and thorough 'Let's Read' has started here on rpg.net. He also did a cracking one on the Frogs Northland Saga :)

Review here too , with the reviewer mostly positive and small niggles- some of which are personal preference imo.

Not going to lie, one of my first thoughts when I heard of the Pathfinder 2 playest was "But Kobold Press is *just* releasing their new Pathfinder player book. Ouch... that's going to hurt sales."

But as others have said, that's a different book. Only a very small percentage of this book is PF1 material. And if Kobold Press does end up releasing a big book of PF2 support (likely in late 2020), they'll probably still direct people to this book for running the setting.

This is not entirely true. You'd miss out on a background, multiple sub-classes, quite a few spells, a nice selection of magical and non-magical items aaaaand all the poisons & drugs.
