You never know when you'll come upon a mysterious derelict vessel during your space explorations! Whether you're salvaging an abandoned starship adrift in space or exploring the ravaged interior of a scuttled wreck, no Game Master wants to spend time drawing every compartment and bulkhead. Fortunately, with Paizo's latest Starfinder Flip-Mat, you don't have to! This line of gaming maps provides ready-to-use science-fantasy set pieces for the busy Game Master. The double-sided map features a deserted tramp freighter on one side and the derelict hulk of a science research vessel on the other, each one ready for your players to board and investigate.
Don't waste time sketching when you could be playing. With Starfinder Flip-Mat: Ghost Ship, you'll always be ready next time your players find a mysterious ship!

I don't remember in exactly which scenarios, but I've played on the Ghost Ship flip-mat a few different times in Starfinder Society games. The "front" of the flip-mat is the "derelict hulk of a science research vessel", and it's clearly a ship that has been through the wars! Huge cracks are visible in the deck plating and large chunks of the exterior has been torn away. It definitely has an air of foreboding around it, and really serves the well the "ghost ship" idea of the PCs coming along a mysterious damaged vessel drifting in space. It's also very well detailed, down to commodes, beds, first aid kits, computer keyboards, and more. The "back" of the flip-mat is a "deserted tramp freighter". I don't understand the purpose of this side, as it's just an ordinary starship interior with no damage and absolutely nothing spooky about it. In fact, it'd serve perfectly well as the PCs' own ship. Maybe at the time the flip-mat was released, there weren't many others depicting starships, but there's certainly no "ghost ship" vibe about this side. To me, that means only half the concept brief is met.
GOOD:
The damaged science vessel hulk looks really good.
I can really see players exploring it.
There are now black lines in space, which allows space battles outside the starship interior!
BAD:
The black lines in space are very hard to see, even in bright light.
The freighter starship has three very cramped cargo holds, but very luxurous sleeping quarters. It's engine section is bigger than two of the cargo holds combined. The round front section design also offers a very limited space for play.
UGLY:
Too much black space (with black squares) on a limited size map is not a good investment.
Real life starships, like submarines are designed for efficiency, not luxury. These maps should offer 90% usable squares and not just look good.
Sorry to say it, but there are too many "oversized" flip-mats in the Starfinder Flip-Mat line imo.
I want more normal sized ones.
I get that some have to be oversized (starfield for starship battles makes sense, as does the Sunrise Maiden), but Asteroids and now Ghost ship don't have to be larger.
What starships are shown here? Where are their outwards pictures?
They aren't named, and have been used for various purposes in different scenarios.
That said: The golden ship matches the general depiction of the Idari Crucible Works' designs, and the other ship has been used to depict wrecked Starfinder Society vessels. (In one case a century+ old wreck, the other a ship that was still in service.) So in my campaign I decided that that map represents a Hammerhead-class explorer, an older model in the Starfinder fleet that's since been replaced by Drakes and more recent models.
In my lore, Hammerheads rolled into production in the early 100s AG. These workhorses are considered antiquated now, but a handful of them are still in use to this day.
