Death in the Depths

On the trail of an ancient enemy, the heroes seek more information in a merfolk city teeming with intrigue just beneath the waves. They arrive to find a group of deep merfolk claiming that the city is in the path of a destructive sea monster. But this warning is nothing more than a ruse for the campaign's villain to uncover the location to a secret Azlanti military laboratory. The adventurers must carefully maneuver the social currents of the underwater city and unravel dangerous intrigue to get to the bottom of the merfolk's plot and discover where the ancient enemy is headed so they can stop it.

This volume of Pathfinder Adventure Path continues the Ruins of Azlant Adventure Path and includes:

  • "City in the Deep," a Pathfinder RPG adventure for 10th-level characters, by Amber E. Scott.
  • A gazetteer of Talasantri, an underwater city populated by aquatic elves, merfolk, and other aquatic humanoids on the floor of the Arcadian Ocean, by Amber E. Scott.
  • An ecology of the graceful and mysterious merfolk, by Amber E. Scott.
  • An investigation into the reclusive elves of the Mordant Spire and a look at some of the tools they use when patrolling lost Azlant, by Mikko Kallio.
  • A collection of dangerous monsters, by Alex Greenshields, Mark Moreland, Tim Nightengale, and Amber E. Scott.

Should be Amber E. Scott, as mentioned in this blog post.

Sweet, so this is where players will finally get to spend all their gold they likly got during the first 3 adventures but could not really spend it. At least what it feels like to me. I look forward to describing to my players how the only weapon shop is Tridents R Us.

Absolutely correct. Looks like the wrong name ended up on the mock-up cover.

There are a few places for PCs to trade in the first three adventures, but this place is certainly the place with the best selection.

Interesting.

Adam, is this one of the Merfolk cities rumored around Golarion? Also, will you provide a full build up of city stats and other Merfolk or Aquatic Elf Cities on Golarion in the Gazetteer section?

It was founded as a merfolk community, but as it grew it now has aquatic elves and other aquatic races living in it (siyokoi, cecaelia, locathah, etc). The gazetteer is only going to focus on this city, and not others that are out there in the world's oceans.

This one also says late October.

It will be interesting to read about the Mordant Spire elves and Merfolk.

What can you tell us about the siyokoi that Adam Daigle mentioned back in April?

So anyone have this one yet?

If so what are the monsters?

You know how oni are based on a humanoid of some sort? Think oni + merfolk.

K so what is a Giant stargazer and a tullimonstrum, and are they animal companionable?

The choices we've gotten so far in this series for ACs have been pretty awesome and I'd love to see that continue.

Hey guys look I've just learned about this amazing website called Wikipedia it has some really cool stuff it's basically just like an encyclopedia only online and it like articles for everything, including Giant stargazers and Tullimonstrum but it sure does load slowly on my 56k modem I hope you'll have more success!

I can never tell if those monsters are completely made, taken from mythology, or real life creatures.

Never heard of it.

Back to the Bestiary, the Giant Stargazer is a fish? I would think it’d be a giraffe like creature or something.

It's a fish.

Now Paizo needs to print a Pink Fairy Armadillo so that we can watch you and Dragon78 duke it out over whether it's Fey or Magical Beast. :P

Aberration!!!

Note that they already did that, in the last AP, with the Dallo. Even comes with a picture so you know the giant pig armadillo is actually a pink fairy armadillo with animal companion stats.

Why look, sometimes things people are looking for are already here but have different names, or have been slightly reconstituted. It helps to ask rather than jump down someone's throat now doesn't it?

Exactly, that's why I asked. Thing sounds more like a new desna creature like the Star Moth than a fish, and considering this AP already has giant gliding tortoises I'd figure I might as well ask.

Also, now I really want to know if the Tullimonstrum has art. The pictures that keep popping for me here make the thing look like what happens when someone drops acid and tries to draw a cephalopod.

Hmm, I have few things that confuse me about the adventure:

:
Why is there a choice between merfolk and aquatic elf family anyway? I mean, adventure itself is very biased towards merfolk family,
you rescue family's daughter while traveling to Talasantri while elf family's son is being obnoxious at city gates not letting you in.
Also, offering a choice between two feuding families mean that every event related to the family is kind of generic since adventure can't make assumptions which one of two different families was chosen as host ._.

Second thing I'm confused about it, well, ok, I can get that some of BBEG's mercenaries can be neutral without being evil, but I still don't get how BBEG itself is neutral aligned considering she willingly works for Ochymya and her plans involve a lot of things that will kill bystanders.

Third thing I'm confused about is after the adventure makes big deal out of Vallik and bbeg looking for them, when pcs finally find Vallik and the BBEG, adventure treats Vallik as disposable encounter and doesn't consider what happens if player interrogates them or if they survive the encounter <_< It makes sense to me that even if BBEG dies, well, Vallik doesn't sound like they have a reason to fight to the death, so why doesn't book detail PCs talking to them? I mean, I can understand the broken soul divine guardian monster from earlier not being able to be reasoned with, there is no way at these levels that players could help them and situation they are in means they have to put Achol down, but Vallik is stated to just want to live peacefully and only reason they fight is because BBEG lied to them about PCs intentions. The concluding adventure part seems to assume that no matter what, PCs get the information from BBEG, whether with speak with dead or interrogation, but no mention of Vallik is made at all.

Also bit bothered by how exposition is handled in form of five handouts near the end of the adventure.

Overall, I like the adventure and I do like it tries to do the "ok, there are multiple ways these events can proceed based on what players chose before" thing, but I'm confused by those three things ._.

Defintely one of my favourite things in this book, and defintely a monster I am going play around with as much as possible.

So what's an Ensysian?

Really interesting choices of animals/vermin, by the way.

Ensyan is aboleth creation.

:
Its essentially alghollthu remora(it attaches to them) that Fifth Dictum created to use against other alghollthu. It basically boost's aboleth's abilities and gives their attacks bane ability against aboleths
