For the Pathfinder RPG customer who wants a little more, Everyman Gaming is proud to introduce Everyman Minis! Uniting several high-quality Pathfinder RPG freelancers under a single product line, each week a different Everyman Gaming author or freelancer tackles an exciting new topic by creating a miniature product specially designed to scratch that product’s particular itch.
This installment of Everyman Minis includes: 1,000 words unchaining the game’s most woefully oppressed mammal—the kangaroo. Gone are the days where the noble kangaroo is incorrectly represented in Pathfinder. Be unchained, little kangaroo! Be unchained…. Also included is a stat block for an awakened kangaroo so GMs can kick their player’s butts with extra class, and an all-new Kangaroo Style feat chain for players and GMs alike to enjoy.
Because at Everyman Gaming, we’re hopping mad about properly depicting the raw power and grace that is the kangaroo!

This everyman mini clocks in at 10 pages, 1 page front cover, 1 page editorial, 4 pages of SRD, 1 page advertisement, leaving us with 3 pages of content, so let’s take a look!

So, why unchain the kangaroo? Well, they don’t trap foes like e.g. wolves and analogue creatures: They actually have claws. And even the front paws aren’t as harmless as they look. Hence, we get cool alternate stats for unchained kangaroo animal companion stats on the first page – no complaints regarding them in comparison to other animal companion stats. (They advance at 4th level, just fyi.)

The regular kangaroo presented herein would be a CR ½ creature, whose kick causes bludgeoning and piercing damage (which can be a bit odd in DR-interaction) and a threat-range of 19-20. They can’t kick as part of a full attack unless their BAB is equal to or exceeds +6. Crits with kicks can disembowel you, causing bleeding wounds and Con-damage – OUCH!

Things get cooler, though – there’s a second statblock in here. Jack. Jack isn’t like other kangaroos. He is actually an awakened unarmed fighter 5 that uses Everyman gaming’s cool Unchained Fighter-rules. He is quick, deadly, and damn cool!

Oh, and folks observing him have reverse engineered his fighting tricks – represented by a Style-feat chain: Kangaroo Style decreases the penalty to feint non-humanoids to -2, -4 against animal intelligence foes. Additionally, high ranks in Acrobatics increase the bonuses gained from fighting defensively or using the total defense action. The feat also doubles as both Acrobatic and Combat Expertise for the purpose of prerequisites. The follow-up feat is Kangaroo Gait, who allows you to feint as a swift action when moving more than 10 ft. When using Spring Attack, you can instead feint the target as a free action. Kangaroo Roundhouse, the third feat in the chain, lets you add Acrobatic ranks to the damage roll on all successful attacks versus a target you feinted successfully via Kangaroo gait, replacing Strength modifier. Kudos: Feat takes the Vital Strike chain into account.

Conclusion:

Editing and formatting are excellent, I noticed no hiccups. Layout adheres to a two-column standard with a printer-friendly, white background. The full-color artwork is nice. The pdf has no bookmarks, but needs none at its length.

Alexander Augunas’ unchained kangaroos are amazing. The critter is cool. The companion stats are nice. The awakened character? Glorious. The feats are interesting as well – what’s not to like? My final verdict will clock in at 5 stars + seal of approval.

Endzeitgeist out.

Was this supposed to be available on the 1st? ;P

That's when we uploaded it, but of course the 1st was a weekend this year so no one was at paulo to make it live. Ideally we'd have uploaded it earlier in the week, but that's not how our work week went. :P
But it's a real, useable product, so we still want it up for sale.

Interesting typo (Paizo/paulo), heh.

I figured as much that is what happened. I doubt I will ever use this but for $2 (well, more like $3-ish in Canadian money), it might be worth the amusement from reading it. I will have to ask my players if they are interested. Any chance though you guys might do something similar (but not as a joke) for ferrets/mongoose? I want to include additional anthropomorphic races in my Kingmaker campaign and the ferret/mongoose seem like a natural fit.

I was literally just thinking about maybe making a character with a kangaroo animal companion/mount. Clearly, this is a sign. (*cart*)

So this doesn't give a kangaroo race; it is an update to the kangaroo monster stat block. It also includes an awakened kangaroo Unchained fighter NPC, as well as a new style feat chain (Kangaroo Style). I've had a request for an update to the kangaroo animal companion using this new kangaroo update; I'm going to see what I can do in that regard.

Also, I had *no* idea that kangaroos were going to be this popular. If end up seeing a demand for a short kangaroo race as an Everyman Mini, then I don't see why I couldn't do a race. But the interest needs to be there first.

Amusingly, what I'd actually like to see unchained would be the bear and bear animal companion...looking at them compared to other predators such as lions and cheetahs, and, well...

...it's unBEARable.

...sorry. Couldn't resist.

I'm not sorry.

Away!

I was just actually coming on here to say that I'm disappointed about not having rules for an "unchained" animal companion, so this was cool to read. That said, I'm still happy with the purchase. It's fun, and it got me curious enough about real world kangaroos to go to Google, so it's educational too! ;)

(Also second Luthorne's desire to an "unchained bear" animal companion.)

Maybe? Its sort of a slippery slop from, "Let's fix another animal," to "Let's redo ALL of the animals." I did kangaroo because the original kangaroo's abilities didn't mesh with how those animals actually defend themselves. Without having a book in front of me, I'm pretty sure that that the bear stat block is more accurate in that front. Whether or not its CR is properly balanced other animals? I'm not sure sure that's as huge of a deal.

Also, "Unchained Kangaroos" is the most awesome April Fools' Day product name ever. There's something just inherently silly about it. ;-)

In any case, this isn't me saying, "I'm never going to unchain anther monster again." This is me saying, "I'm not as inclined to unchain other monsters as I am the kangaroo." Of course, I'm always open to changing my mind—if this product sells well enough that its clear there's a demand for some more monster unchainings, I'd certainly oblige. :)

More kangaroos please. <3

Unchained kangaroos? Does no one listen to the dying requests of Australians anymore?

[Emphasis mine.] Kangaroos are marsupials, not mammals. Oppressed yes, by nomenclature as well as PF's original treatment.

??? Is this a reference to something that I'm not aware of? Marsupials are mammals.

Marsupials are a subset of mammals, unless the nomenclature has changed in recent decades.

Glad to see another fan is hopping mad for unchained kangaroos! Thanks, End!

Aye, they are amazing! As are many of your minis - currently trying to catch up, at least partially, with them. There is some seriously wicked cool stuff in the series!!

My authors and I certainly try for that feeling! It doesn't always come out perfectly, but every Everyman Mini is definitely a learning experience. (And if you had asked me this time last year whether I felt I could maintain two products a week alongside graduate classes, the answer would have been very different then it is now. :) )
