Dead Trees Give No Shelter

Life might be scarce in the barren corners of Golarion, but Pathfinder Player Companion: People of the Wastes provides all the tools you need to become a master of wasteland domains. Whether your character is roaming the magic-singed lands of the Mana Wastes, the flooded fields of the Sodden Lands, the blighted depths of the Fangwood, or the demonic wilds of the Worldwound, this book offers advice, class options, and gear that allow her to survive and thrive where no hero ever should. Find the perfect trait for your wasteland-born character, or just the right archetype, feats, or spells to reflect her training in a harsh locale.

Inside this book you'll find:

  • Class features, feats, and items that interact with primal magic, including the primal shaman, who can commune with the unstable spirits that linger where primal magic reigns.
  • A host of new firearms and gun-toting archetypes for characters who hail from the Grand Duchy of Alkenstar, including the gun chemist alchemist and the gun smuggler rogue.
  • New witch hexes and vigilante talents for characters living in boggy wastes, plus ranger traps and the blightwarden ranger archetype for those who tread blight-filled lands.

This Pathfinder Player Companion is intended for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game and the Pathfinder campaign setting, but it can easily be incorporated into any fantasy world.

Not Bad But Not Great

3/5

There are some interesting things in there but all in all the book is OK. Maybe one day we will get a mutant feat tree and/or some more mutant based archetypes.

Needs Tweaking but very fluffy

4/5

People of the wastes containts a multitude of options for an otherwise rarely visited area of Golarion.

One thing that bothers me is that multiple options hinge on the mana wastes mutant template, whose pros far outstrip the cons, I believe however that all the options granted by this book are fair and reasonable.

Tapping into clockwork cybernetics, primal magic and proximity to the gun capital of the world, People of the wastes is a perfect addition for people who want to make more oddball or even grimdark characters.

Solid overall

4/5

Good flavor text, decent art, and as usual, a few gems in the ever increasing bloat. My favorite new bit is the new Alchemist archetype with guns, it is mechanically solid and flavorful.

It is interesting to read about but not to play in.

I love it for that, but it would screw up games something fierce if was done in any way besides planned events.

How else are we gonna fight with a Greatsword and a lantern, I don't want to keep switching back and forth >_<

I still have the original Realms of Chaos - Slaves to Darkness..... now THAT was a mutation table.

Some hilarious book-keeeping antics in those days.... :))

Oh man I hope there's new nifty stuff for Shieldmarshals when it comes to gear and traits and feats. The gunman's duster in UC sounds cool but is such a waste of money.

Is it safe t assume there will be a new archetype or two for gunslingers?

I am still on the fence about this one. I will wait until it gets it's final product description to make my final decision.

I am just excited for the fact that their is a style fear chain that can allow a gunslinger to pistol whip a jammed firearm and have a chance of fixing the jam. Delightful >:)

Yes, it was mentioned in the Setting the Scene: Pathfinder Player Companions & Campaign Settings seminar at GenCon.

More Gunslinger material, good good. Looking forward to this.

Why does it still say "late October" if this is a November release?

Well the book hasn't been updated yet.

Silver Crusade

Also it says "Preorder expected late October".

Lets wait and see when the product description and art get updated then look at the release info;)

The day that we spawn subscription orders is towards the end of October so that we can have them shipped before the release date of November 15th. Unfortunately the order creation date for subscriptions is the one that gets pulled for that "Preorder expected" date which can be confusing when it cross over months like this.

I would have though they would have updated this one by now, it is only a couple or so weeks away.

The description is updated. I just don't see the cover art having been.

Yeah, looking at it the description has been updated, but for some reason the art has not.

Come to think of it does anyone know were the mock-up art is from?

Yeah, updates are still lagging behind the usual schedule since GenCon 50. ;-(

Damn....I'm betting if there was a Primal Kineticist Archetype it would have been mentioned in the update.....sad....sad....sad.....

I am not a fan of kineticist archetypes, now kineticist wild talents and feats on the other hand:)

There was that Primal attunement thing in... Occult Origins I want to say? Basically you take a nap in the mana wastes and wake up with the ability to create primal magic events.

Nice cover: Valeros & Lirianne fighting mutant gnolls in the "mana wastes".

It’s good that you can admit your mistakes like that.

I always thought of gnolls as less snugly and more "Tasmanian Devils"...but this is good too. :)

I like the "Tasmanian Devil" idea.

Nonsense. Gnolls are anthropomorphic hyenas, and hyenas are adorable.

You know, it's funny, but with a lot of the modern work being done on how Hyena packs form and interact, you could actually make a real good case that the Gnolls would be more likely to be nice than the "noble lion" people.

Yeah, seeing footage of lion packs moving in on hyena packs or lone cheetahs and running them off so they can kill all of their young is pretty eye-opening (I mean, evolutionarily it's a great strategy to safely cut down on the number of competing predators in one's territory, but the whole 'let's murder their kids!' idea doesn't market well to the animal-lover focus groups).

Also the statistics indicating that hyenas and lions both kill and scavenge in roughly equal numbers (and both cheerfully rob each others kills, when they can, or those of the beleaguered cheetahs, who haven't been able to cope with this whole 'pack' concept yet...), which tends to mess with the whole 'noble proud hunter, filthy lazy scavenger' branding.

That all said, gnolls seem quite a bit less cuddly than hyenas.

Whether they worship Yeenoghu, back in the old days, or Lamashtu, in this glorious new age, they still are all kinds of unlikable with the slavery and the anthropophagy and the general jerk-being.
