Sandy Petersen is the undisputed authority on the Cthulhu Mythos in games as the author of the groundbreaking game Call of Cthulhu, the first game ever to bring H.P. Lovecraft's work to the gaming world. He now proudly presents the definitive and ultimate guide to bringing Lovecraft to the high fantasy, sword and sorcery worlds played using the Pathfinder rule system.

Here, your band of heroes can now fight (and maybe even defeat) monstrous horrors and bizarre, inhumanly advanced races in adventures featuring these unique entities, their magics, and the alien technologies accurately portrayed from Lovecraftian works!

This core rulebook features a bestiary with over 100 creatures, monstrosities, and Mythos Entities authoritatively revised and updated for use with Pathfinder, plus Plot Hooks and Campaign starters, information on Mythos Alien and Bizarre Technology, new expansive Insanity Rules, and details on Cults of Cthulhu and the Necronomicon and other blasphemous Tomes, as well as new Rituals, Spells, Archetypes, and Class Options.

Content Includes:

  • A bestiary with over 100 entries, almost half never before seen in a Pathfinder book before.
  • Over 25 Mythos Entities: Creatures in the Paizo's Pathfinder Bestiaries now authoritatively revised & updated in this book. Additionally, the original entries as found in the Bestiaries are also included for easy reference and comparison.
  • Over 50 NEW Mythos Entries: Creatures from the Cthulhu Mythos that have never before been published in any Pathfinder Bestiary.
  • Over 40 ‘Unusual Suspects': Creatures that could (and maybe should) be in the Cthulhu Mythos, found in the pages of the current Pathfinder Bestiaries. Some have been updated to reflect our new rules.
  • Adventures: Plot Hooks and Campaign starters by Sandy Petersen and others.
  • How to run horror in a heroic sword and sorcery setting by Sandy Petersen.
  • Mythos Alien and Bizarre Technology
  • New Expansive Insanity Rules
  • The Necronomicon and other Tomes
  • New Rituals and Spells
  • Archetypes and Class Options for Base Classes
  • Cults of Cthulhu and Other Great Old Ones
  • Mythos Magic Items and Artifacts
  • Aklo Language Essay
  • Mythos Ghouls as Player Characters
  • Mythos Eidolons, Familiars and Animal Companions
  • Tcho-Tchos
  • Gnorri as Player Characters
  • Advanced Adversaries
  • Zoogs as Player Characters
  • Mythos Cats and Mythos Cats as Player Characters

I’m loving the character options. I don’t think there’s any call outs to Golarion in it, or if there are I missed it.

There’s 2 Bestiaries in effect, ones a recollection of Pathfinder monsters that might be thematic and then there’s a Bestiary of completely new monsters (or ones with very different stats, I love the Wendigo).

Thank you, Rysky.

Would you be able to run a normal Pathfinder Core character with these rules?

I GM a low fantasy GURPS campaign with a Cthulhu twist. The players are not so fond of the system and I've been thinking about changing to Pathfinder rules. This sounds like just what I need:-)

Could the player make characters using CORE & AGP and then play them with these rules?
And, could I, as GM use my other Pathfinder books, NPC's and such?

Thanks again

You can run this book with just the Pathfinder core rules no issues. I only have two caveats on that. First you should allow players to use the players options section of this book where campaign appropriate. Obviously if ghouls or dreamlands cats don't work as races in your campaign setting disallow that, but some of the feats and equipment presented for players in this book are expected for dealing with the threats presented, specifically mechanics for dealing with dread and insanities.

Second to keep a low fantasy feel in Pathfinder it is advisable to restrict the spell selection of full casters, those being spellcasters capable of casting 9th level spells. There is a habit of Pathfinder to bypass roleplaying opportunities via spells that just magically solve a problem. Specifically I'd either just ration out wizard spellbook access or just make spellcasters be sorcerers/oracles instead of wizards/clerics.

Oh right, another thing. For monster variety you probably want to use a few more Bestiaries as the GM, unless you want literally every monster to be from the mythos.

You can run this book with ...

Thank you, sounds like good advise -

I think that We'll run this as E6 (or is it 6E?) with the slow progression. And very few magic items.

E6 is probably a good idea for the tone it sounds like you're going for.

What I thought - downloaded P6 and will read it during the weekend.

Any chance that any of you lucky/clever owners of the pdf would write a Product review?

Pretty please ...

...The logical conclusion, of course, is that you should be careful what you ask for in case you actually get it. This book is many things, but "Safe for PCs" is not one of them. XD Seriously, some of the threats - like Elder Influences - are nasty.

Thanks for the review, GM rednal, that was very helpful - and I'm very happy now that I ordered the book, though I have to wait.

sounds like it'll be worth the wait!

We got pics from the proofing process on the 13th of December. Other than that, we should be pretty close to the full printing and shipping. It'll probably go out to backers first, then distributors like Paizo.

Thanks! Can't wait:-)

Got my preorder in. The company site is showing "sold out" on all the editions of the book already.

Well, poop. Guess there goes my copy.

I wouldn't give up just yet. After initial shipments - and saving a few for returns/exchanges - companies usually have a couple left over. They'll probably accommodate you if you ask to reserve any of those they might have. ^^

Hope not - were one of the backers?

Good sales is great for Peterson Games. Now I'll hope that they'll print more!
Really want this book:-)

Will there definitely be a PDF version available to buy? I'm in the UK and the shipping on big books would be huge and I'm not feeling very confident that I could buy it through other channels over here. Really wish I'd backed the kickstarter now :'-(

This...

And I would have backed the Kickstarter, but I have been having a lot of issues with my account there (has to do with my old phone, a backup email account that I no longer have access to, and being frustrated by Yahoo).

Please do not suggest pirating.

I'm pretty sure the PDF version will be up for sale when the physical version comes out. I'm actually a little surprised that they haven't already put it up - backers got it a long time ago, and there's not much other reason to delay.

I have to say I'm loving the Aklo essay. I really like it when a language is made out to be more than just "you put a rank in Linguistics, you're now fluent in this tongue."

Update: Backers were just sent some pictures from the printer. The books (clearly) aren't done being printed yet, but physical production is happening.

Manohmanohmaaaann!!!!

Update: More pics (for backers) came out today. We have quite a lot of pictures of a proofing copy (not bound or with the proper cover), but it does have things like pages in the right order, full colors for everything, and so on. Things look pretty good so far, so it probably won't be long before the full print run gets going. ^^

We have been in touch with the folks at Petersen Games, and we will have plenty of copies available on paizo.com when they are released for retail sale.

Update: Pics of the leather cover for the collector's edition. The signed sheets are being shipped back to the printers. We're continuing to progress towards the final release. ^^

Getting closer now. New update gave backers a draft of a neat adventure and apparently the Hero Lab files are coming along nicely

And ANOTHER update gives us a video of an advance copy. XD The books are almost done being printed and should be shipped out soon. Dunno how long the Trans-Pacific leg will be, but we're getting veeeeeery close now.
