    Great Starting for Starfinder pawns!

    5/5

Really happy with this one! Why they didn't do the same with Pathfinder, well, because they don't have the amount of different characters which Starfinder has populated their books. I'm so happy to have them as pawns. A must for any Starfinder campaign or game!

    Useful, but with Limitations

    3/5

The Core Rulebook Pawn Collection was the first set of pawns released for Starfinder. If you're new to the pawns concept, they're thick flat double-sided cardboard tokens that slot into plastic bases that are sized appropriately for the size of the creature in tactical combat on a 5-inch grid. This collection relies on images from the Core Rulebook and includes about 100 different creature pawns and 15 different starship pawns. Multiples of most pawns are included--usually 2 of each, though some creatures only get 1 and one (space goblins) get 4. Starships tend to come in groups of 3 or 4. I've used the set for about a year now, and I'm happy with the coverage of options it provides for PCs and NPCs of the core races; there's eight different Lashuntas, for example, and sixteen different humans. Beyond the core races, however, coverage drops significantly: there's only one type of elf, one type of dwarf, and a few others like a single haan, sarcesian, etc. Some other drawbacks:

    * The set does not come in a box; once you punch out the pawns, you'll have to come up with a custom storage solution to keep them organized.

    * The set does not include bases; you'll need to purchase those separately or use the ones included with another set.

    * Inexplicably (and unlike the Pathfinder pawn sets), there is no set indicator symbol. This means that once you start bringing in Starfinder pawns from other sets, separating what belongs to any given set can get very time-consuming.

The drawbacks aren't so major that I regret buying the set; I use it more than any other, as it's the default product I put out when players need to choose tokens for their characters. But I would suggest going in with your eyes open about the pros and cons here.

    Space Pawns!

    5/5

I like them: I use them in a lot of my games (though I have other minis)
    Having the pregens is great.
For me they deliver what I want: nice colorful images of Starfinder characters and enemies, that I can easily carry around with me.

Starfinder, Pathfinder, Star Wars, Shadowrun. Pawns bring high quality fun!

    5/5

Lashuntas get their antennas cruelly cut off by bad picture scaling

    2/5

At first I thought, hey, this is a really useful pawn set. A lot of pawns for each race, which is nice with oddball new races for which there isn't a lot of art out there to make your own pawns with.

But what really annoys me is that the pictures are often slightly too big for the pawns they're printed on so that bits get snipped off at the edges. Like the lashuntas antennas. Or like the guns and other cool weapons people are holding (lots of sawed-off laser rifles).

This is bad. It could have been prevented by shrinking the picture 5% so it would fit on the pawn. And it's something Paizo has been doing wrong for years.

    ---

    ADDENDUM

A big, BIG PROBLEM with this set though is that the name of the pawn set isn't printed on the pawns, nor do they have numbers. That sounds trivial but it isn't. I store my pawns in the original cardboard in their boxes - easiest way to keep them sorted. If I need a monster from Bestiary 17 starting with Q, I pop open box 17 and flip cardboard until I come to monsters starting with a Q. After I'm done playing, I have a hand of pawns from five boxes, but each pawn has a box name printed on it so I now where to put it back. It's very easy and efficient.

Bestiary boxes, as well as Pathfinder AP pawn collections, the Villain Codex, NPC Codes all have this handy system. But the Starfinder sets don't. Neither Alien Archive, nor Pact Worlds, nor Core Rulebook. So if I've used pawns from all three in an adventure (which is really not that unlikely) I have to do a lot of looking up to see where to put them back. And Alien Archive 2 is going to hit the shelves in a couple of months. This problem could get bigger and bigger.

PLEASE PAIZO PUT THE NAME OF THE PAWN SET ON THE PAWNS. Also please the number in that set. You've done this for years and it's really useful. Why did you stop?

The descriptive text mentions "Starfinder Pawns Base Assortment" - how does this differ from the "Pathfinder Pawns Bases" and when will the come out?

    Thx Chris.

    Nevermind, i found this:

Oooh! Is that a Sarcesian on the cover? I think it was mentioned that they aren't going to be a core race, but the description could fit. Maybe art from the AP?

EDIT: Looks like it might be from First Contact, now that I read that product description.

I've never heard of them before. Any info about them?

They were mentioned in Distant Worlds, as inhabitants of the Diaspora. There doesn't seem to be much I can find about them online, other than this.

    Liberty's Edge

They're going to be in the Starfinder First Contact supplement for Free Game Day.

A sarcesian iconic? I don't think that's the iconic, but I would love to have one of these aliens among them. Especially as the mystic. Their energy like wings would fit the class, I suppose.

Unless they modified the race considerably from the depiction in Distant Worlds, I don't think that figure on the left is a Sarcesian. The Sarcesian in Distant Worlds is 10 to 15 feet tall (not about human size like the guy on the cover above) and has a very different look to his face.

My guess would be that this guy is either a Vercite or a Summerborn Triaxian. I would give the nod to Vercite since the planet Verces orbits closer to the sun than the far more distant Triaxus. Either way, this guy would then have to be manifesting wings from a class power -- maybe he is a Solarian?

And then there is that robot on the right. Since neither of the other two characters on the cover appears to be a Mechanic, I don't think he is a robot companion. Maybe he is an Aballonian?

If these two guys are our missing iconics, then the seven core races in Starfinder would be Human, Lashunta, Ysoki (Ratfolk), Kasatha, Android, Vercite, and Aballonian. That list would cover most of the races from People of the Stars (omitting only the Triaxians) without leaving any other obvious holes.

I think he's probably a Sarcesian since the race is mentioned in the description and honestly, they looked a little weird in their previous depiction. I would've changed they're look too if I was paizo. Plus there's always the possibility they evolved to be shorter in stature to better suit flight.

Sarcesians are mentioned in the description of "First Contact", not the Pawn Collection. That is actually an argument against them being a core Starfinder race.

I keep reading this as Prawn Collection :)

I love the new designs but as far as them being core races... i thought the two unseen races were supposed to be much more alien than what we've seen so far and neither of those seem exceptionally beyond the four armed Kasatha we know of and the Androids we've already seen at the table. But on the other hand, Battle Droid as a player choice? YES PLEASE!

Pathfinder Maps, Starfinder Adventure Path, Starfinder Maps, Starfinder Roleplaying Game, Starfinder Society Subscriber; Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

I do remember reading about one of the races being distinctly non-humanoid, which to me would suggest Aballonians, Formians, or possibly Trox. Other candidates would all seem to have problems operating in the Earth-like environments that the other PC races would favor.

I am also having a great deal of trouble figuring out how Vercites could possibly not be a core race in the Starfinder setting. People of the Stars suggests using the stats of elves or half-elves for this race, but we already know that those races will not be core races in Starfinder. Vercites have an interesting and distinct culture that would make for a variety of interesting PC backgrounds. They are the dominant race on one of the inner planets of the solar system and were traveling through space even during the Pathfinder era. There would have to be a major catastrophe to their civilization to demote them to non-major status.

I totally just accidentally read that as, "A sarcasm iconic?" Now, I really want to play a character with the Sarcasm class, complete with sarcastic class features and a bonus (penalty?) to the Diplomacy skill.

I want this RPG! I like fantasy better than Sci-Fi, but this, Its beatiful.

I'm pretty sure that, as this isn't the final cover, they just used artwork from elsewhere as placeholder pieces. And that is probably the Sarcesian artwork from First Contact.

As to the size difference, as these pieces are most likely from three different sources and not one illustration (note that they've used the same image of Navasi on three of the different mockup covers), that the sizes of the different characters shouldn't necessarily be taken relative to one another. If they are all standalone pieces (as I suspect), then they could all frankly be any size at all, from tiny to gargantuan.

If, as has been speculated, that is a Sarcesian, then those are its energy wings.

Ah! That makes sense! I see it now, thanks!

Can anyone from Paizo tell us how applicable these pawns will be to the Dead Suns adventure path? I'm sure there will be some overlap, but the tabletop minis market is mostly geared toward fantasy and there are absolutely no Starfinder minis, yet.

I'm wondering how much support this pawn set will provide for folks who are anxious to jump into the AP before the AP collection is released (which is usually after the last AP issue).

    Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

The AP is going to introduce a lot of its own NPCs and monsters, but it's also going to use stuff from the Core Rulebook and the Alien Archive as well. This set probably won't be *quite* as helpful as the Alien Archive Box or the eventual AP set, but I don't think you'll regret having it... and it might at least give you some properly themed stand-ins until those other sets arrive.

That's what I thought. I'll be picking up both the core set and the Alien Archive set. I was just curious about what to expect.

    Thanks, Vic!

Got to play with some of these in one of the Delves at PaizoCon, they look great in person!

Glad to hear there will be pawns support for the Dead Suns AP as well, though I suspect it'll be quite a while before they materialize.

So, this is the PC set?

There are a lot of PC/NPC options in there, yes. Also, the iconic characters are in there too, though they're not specifically named as such; for example, the Android Operative pawn is Iseph.

Does this mean the Starfinder Core Rulebook will contain an NPC section with statblocks? Or will that feature be left to the Alien Archive?

    Dark Archive

I counted 231 pawns in all, 98 different creatures and 15 different starships.

There are only small medium and (3) large pawns, i guess Alien Archive will have a few huge ones (like the Bloodbrother), but still no gargantuan ones (which kinda makes the cool Ellicoth unusable).

The Starfinder Core Rulebook's Classes section provides guidelines for creating characters using different character themes for each class, and that's where a lot of these tokens come from.

NPC statblocks aren't a significant part of either the Core Rulebook or the Alien Archive, just as they weren't a significant part of the Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook or Bestiary.

    @James -

We released the information today that we will have the Starfinder maps for use by the Quest GMs. We are bringing pawns as well.

GMs need to bring Pathfinder Map Pack Starship Chambers and Pathfinder Map Pack Starship Corridors, as well as bases for the pawns.

The Leads will send this information out in the next weekly update so that all GMs know what to expect.

    Thanks, Vic!

I think my group will use that time to plan our campaign -- after all, it would be a bit ambitious for me to try to run a Starfinder game the moment I get the core rulebook -- especially given the number of non-subscribers among my players who probably won't have the rulebook before late August or early September anyway.
