It Came from the Sea

Whether from the dark depths of the ocean or azure tropical seas, heroes rise from beneath the waves. Pathfinder Player Companion: Blood of the Sea explores the mystical paths and strange abilities of sea-born adventurers. Discover the secrets of aquatic elves, gillmen, merfolk, tritons, and more. New magic items and spells aid aquatic characters and land-dwelling characters alike. A host of new archetypes, feats, and other options allow you to infuse your character with the power of the sea. Dive into Blood of the Sea and discover oceans of possibility!

Inside this book you'll find:

  • Archetypes for a variety of classes, such as the coral witch and the kraken slayer paladin, as well as a new cavalier order and bardic masterpieces, useful for characters in aquatic campaigns.
  • Rules for playing nonstandard races like cecaelias, locathahs, and tritons, along with a collection of gear both magical and mundane that can help your heroes in the world beneath the waves.
  • Advice on what to consider when your land-dwelling character must explore the depths, and tips on how aquatic characters can overcome the daunting challenges of adventuring on land.

This Pathfinder Player Companion is intended for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game and the Pathfinder campaign setting but can easily be incorporated into any fantasy world.

Good for underwater

4/5

If you are going to be in a game with a decent portion of it being underwater, especially combat, pick this up, there are some good options. Otherwise, your not missing much.

So does this mean that Tritons will become a playable 0 HD race?

Either that, or they're exploring the idea of making races with racial HD more "playable". The first step to gnoll/lizardfolk content.

...or it's a misprint, and they're referring to naiads. ^_^

Fun.

I am irrationally annoyed about Caligni not getting any options in Blood of Shadows and this is irrationally predjuicing me against this book. Sorry.

If this book does not have alchemical Vigilante Shark Repellant or a spell that convinces dolphins to take one for the team and blow themselves up, I will be disappointed. Sorely disappointed, I tell you.

Porpoise Detonation (Druid 1, sorcerer/wizard 4, Witch 4, vigilante 1)
Casting time: Full round
Components: V, M (a bit of salmon)
Effect: one dolphin
Range: Close (25' +5'/ level)
Duration: One round per level
Save: Will, Spell Resistance: No

You convince a conveniently near by dolphin to sacrifice itself to save a bunch of underserving people. The GM may increase the DC if the caster uses really good salmon. Using smoked salmon will lower the DC by 2.

I can only assume the one round per level duration means this is in slow motion.

Well, the vigilante may need to run back and forth on the dock for a while...

That, and you know, dolphins are fast but they aren't that fast. The bomb could be a ways off.

Hmmm interesting coming up on an aquatic adventure path (assumed). Much like the other aquatic book coming I think I'll wait till I have a use for it, but still happy to see this content.

You convince a conveniently nearby dolphin to sacrifice itself to save a bunch of underserving people in order to serve a higher porpoise.

Fixed that for you.

Aquatic elves, merfolk, gillmen, etc. can't wait.

Triton? these guys are not a 0HD race unless there is an option for this?

I hope the naiad from B6 will get some love in this book.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I hope they throw a few bones for the Deep One Hybrids in here....they are one of the playable races I can see getting no love.....And a WHOLE lot of Mordant Spire Elf love....they are long over due for more fleshing out....

I guess making Trions 0HD race would make sense since there aren't many aquatic races in the game .-. With at least tritons, you could have party of four with all having different races

And umm, Mordant Spire Elves aren't aquatic right? ._. Why would they...

I agree, the deep one hybrids could use some love as well.

Yeah, they should get as much love as the Deep Ones. Which is to say, a LOT, just look at how many Deep One Hybrids we have running around.

I'm pretty sure that the aquatic elves, do trade with the Mordent Spire elves was mentioned in one of the source books I read.

They are not water breathers....but they very much live on the ocean...so it's not a stretch....at least to my mind :P

Oh yeah I'm aware, and I want to play it. But I don't know when, or even if, my group will play it.

I'd really like to see selkies and/or a new "selkiefolk" (sleekskins?) skinwalker variant in this.

A selkie variant for skinwalkers would be interesting.

An aquatic related bard archetype would be awesome.

Looking forward to this.

"Expected July 2017." I'm going to predict the name gets changed to Blood in the Sea and it's released during Shark Week.

If the book is going to have stuff for tritons, does that mean other non-0HD aquatic races will show up as well?

Why are aquatic humanoids always elf-based? How about some:

* reef dwarves with dreadlock beards that make their homes in deep coral formations

* slipstream gnomes that specialize in sedimentary, air-bubble, or steam vapor illusions

* pearl-harvesting, amphibious, dolphin-riding halflings that supply the surface world markets with the raw materials for necklaces of fireballs

2 people marked this as a favorite.

......They are not....if anything they are human based....

aquatic gnomes would be fun though.

Hmmmmmm . . .

I might not be getting this book because of one thing:
Cerulean Seas.

Well we have aquatic humans and aquatic elves, so why not aquatic dwarves, gnomes, halflings, and orcs;)

Somehow aquatic dwarves just really makes me laugh my ass off.....

They are in one of the Cerulean Seas books, and look honestly very intimidating.

It still would be nice to nave those options. I mean we have multiple ones that are based on humans like merfolk, gillmen, and even the deep one hybrids are part human 99% of the time.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

I hope there is something in here that makes gillmen worth playing. Currently they are a massive feel bad for a character with their low RP cost and barely anything of note of an actual ability other than swimming.

Some really good racial feats would be nice, hopefully every race in this book get some. Also could always use alternate racial traits.

They do get a cool race-exclusive Rogue Archetype - it doesn't make up for their crippling Water Dependent feature, though. That's their real problem.

I'm more passive about this one...but not passive enough to cancel my subscription! Should be some interesting material in here.

Somebody has to mine those coral reefs.

I still think aquatic versions of all the core races would be interesting.

Dragon78 wrote:

Maybe something like an "aquatic creature" template, just like they did with the "First World Creature" template. A template that doesn't alters the creature more than it's needed to make it an underwater dweller.

I'm really interested in the idea of making the tritons a 0HD race, especially because this could indeed open the way to other creatures transition into 0HD - like gnoll, lizardfolk, serpentfolk, minotaur, fey...

Personally triton blooded undines would work better;)

Will there be an underwater AP coming out soon to help support this product?

Terevalis Unctio of House Mysti wrote:

Ruins of Azlant will probably involve a fair bit of aquatic shenanigans, but if you want a fully aquatic campaign, that's going to be the purview of third-party.

(Although talking about making an AP to support player's companion book is a bit backwards.)

I hope the naiad from B6 made it in.

Unless the naiad is small size, we don't have a small size aquatic race.

So shark repellent was the old Batman TV show. Were exploding dolphins on there too?
