They have been able to manipulate us and go from a generation that went to the Moon using slide rules, doing the math in their heads, to a generation surprised the movie "The Titantic" is based on a true story.

Who's manipulating who now? And to what end?

I'm assuming here, but I'm willing to bet that neither of us ever went to the moon using slide rules. And there were plenty of stupid people in 1969.

A tangentially related xkcd, about how people tend to idealize the past.

People. People are weird and they annoy me.

Smells armpit.

Wait, no, that's me!

I guess I annoy myself.

Goes back to poking self in the shoulder.

YES! I ALSO AM A WEIRD THING THAT ANNOYS ME! {does "Wouldn't You Like To Be A Pepper Annoying Too" dance (badly) along with Yesterday's Dr. Pepper}

I still suspect Tensor is an emergent AI.

So, Deep Thought Chopra.

Shortening class names like Soceror to "Sorc" and Paladin to "Pally". That really grinds my gizzard for some reason. And combining them to form words like "Oradin". GAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I can't wade through the advice forums for exactly that reason.

Also I hate paladins, or more specifically, the people that inevitably play as paladins.

But mostly I blame the class.

I don't hate the class nor the people who play it. I just wish they'd play it the right way. You know, like I would.

There was a time when writing homebrew spells that I abbreviated the default arcane list to SAW (Sorcerer Arcanist Wizard).

You could call it a "Wii" - probably get weird looks as people handed you their money.

Elaborate! Is it mechanics, fluff, or something else?

I am strongly annoyed by bowtie pasta. I like pasta. But I find bowtie pasta to be mildly displeasing functionally and very displeasing aesthetically.

Early I remembered something else that was annoying, but I've forgotten it within the last couple minutes.

I've encountered this from very good friends who just can't or don't want to wrap their heads around these sorts of things.

I came across this recently when looking at a Down the Rabbit Hole YouTube video about Christian W Chandler (popularly, "CWC") the source of the meme Sonichu.

It was... disgusting.

Let me be clear: the Down the Rabbit Hole video was very worthwhile and the creator did solid work. The people other than CWC who were involved in that, though? Horrible. Like, actually reprehensible.

CWC was clearly a mentally ill person with no cognitive capacity to defend himself from the, frankly, predatory actions of people caught up in what amounts to social torture. He held some rather reprehensible views and was clearly socially unpleasant, but he was also a polite and relatively mild-mannered individual who put forth no real focus on any darker elements. And they turned him into a raging paranoid monster, fueling his worst beliefs and character elements while tearing down any ability he might have had to reform by repeatedly abusing his trust and lying to him. Again, these people turned him into a (relative) monster.

And the worst part? People defending the trolls that did it in the comments below by citing (variants of), "If he can't learn, he clearly deserves it."

I just... no.

The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers

(whether the quote is attributable to socrates or not, it appeared in at least 1953, making it accidentally true by this point...)

There's a quote I found years ago that I don't have the book for any more, but the gist of it is a guy complaining about the music young people are listening to: you can't understand the lyrics and it's all muddled up and impossible to hear what's going on.

That guy was Vincenzo Galelei (Galileo's father) and the music he was complaining about was Palestrina...

Truly, kids today, with their music and their pants. Feh.

Yes. Thank you, Tacticslion, for putting that into words. What the trolls did to that poor guy was horrid, and ceaseless. As for his reprehensible views and social ineptitude, it seems to me that he was one of those rare individuals who truly lacked the cognitive capacity to fix those problems. That's not something I would say about 99% of misogynists and homophobes on the internet, but in his case, I think it's sadly the truth. They took an extremely vulnerable individual and consciously, calculatedly, tormented him in order to make his situation go from bad to abominable and turn him into a (like you said, relative) monster. Internet trolls like that are proof you can be Chaotic Evil without ever actually breaking the laws of the land.

The Illuminati are a bunch of hacks! And they stole my symbol too, uncreative jerks! That's why I swapped all their nasal cavities with their colons and tied them up with looping recordings of Vogon poetry and Millard Fillmore's rough draft state of the union being read by Ben Stein after three bottles of NyQuil. Take that, ya Flatland rejects!

Things that bug me....

Whispering. Can't stand it, ESPECIALLY in headphones.

People on forums or chat programs like Discord or Skype who arrive and ask/demand a summary of the current conversation rather than just SCROLL UP AND READ IT YOURSELF.

Vehicles with more than a reasonable amount of bumper stickers. They're inevitably all highly political, too.

April Fool's Day. Pass. No, your pranks are probably not funny.

Discord voice chat and its inability to not drop the most important part of every sentence, forcing me to ask the person I'm talking to to repeat themselves.

The endless assumptions regarding my romantic partnership and the production of children especially from older people at church. And their tendency to get mad at ME when I get tired of them asking me about it and making snide comments about "you'll change your mind" or "your wishes are fine but if God decides otherwise the children will still come" and finally just outright tell them "My SO and I are both asexual, neither of us is interested in sex", they have the gall to get upset at me bluntly mentioning the topic of sex at all. Even though it's been THEIR comments assuming it'll happen and kids will inevitably spring forth, I'M the bad one for not cloaking it in obtusity and metaphor.

Mobile Paizo and its tendency to jump this box around while I'm trying to type.
