Dream a Little Dream...

The cult of Hastur no longer threatens Thrushmoor, and now the adventurers board a riverboat to Cassomir to track down their obsessed and corrupted former employer. Along the way, they explore the Dreamlands and attempt a number of bizarre dream quests, after which the adventurers can heal their fragmented minds—but they also learn of a greater threat looming over Golarion. Can they survive the perilous Dreamlands and emerge intact or will they be stranded in a dimension of nightmares?

This volume of Pathfinder Adventure Path continues the Strange Aeons Adventure Path and includes:

  • "Dreams of the Yellow King," a Pathfinder adventure for 7th-level characters, by Ron Lundeen.
  • A comprehensive gazetteer exploring the Sellen River, Avistan's most expansive waterway, including additional encounters one could run into while sailing its winding course, by Liz Courts.
  • A heart-pounding journey through the dark in the Pathfinder's Journal, by Wendy N. Wagner
  • A collection of terrifying and bizarre monsters, including an enigmatic Great Old One, by James Jacobs and Todd Stewart.

ISBN-13: 978-1-60125-899-1

Good

4/5

Only 2 downsides:
-getting here is basically impossible if your players burned down the mansion and with that the books they needed to do the travels, but that is a problem i need to solve myself.
-In the end of the adventure, it says "oh yeah, I hope you took your player's character sheets at level 7 and copied them, cause now you'll need them. This encounter could've been so cool! And putting a short disclaimer in the beginning of the book would've been so easy, but noooooo, it's gotta be at the end of the book, when the PC's already advanced 2 levels. That's just neglect of the reader

This part of the adventure is gorgeous! 2 lines of adventure, intertwining together however the DM wants it to happen. you can count the days they travel and make it exact, or eyeball all the encounters! Add more sea encounters from behind the book if you want too! And the dreamland parts are amazing, so much creative stuff went into there, and the RP options are amazing as well

Fantastically imaginative!

5/5

GOOD:
Most of the iconic artwork is gorgeous. The maps are simple enough to recreate, yet beautiful and never to large to draw upon a flip-mat.
The locations are very diverse and there are plenty of roleplaying opportunities. The Dream Quests realy evoke a fairytale-like fantasy atmosphere, rarely seen in mainstream Pathfinder.
The Sellen River article and map are great.
All 5 Bestiary creatures are fantastic, especially the "Ib Shade"section, because it offers rules for playing the 0 racial hit dice "Being of Ib" as a 14-point race.

BAD: The "Sellen Starling" is unrealistically small (36 squares) for 19 people to spend such a long journey (1,250 miles) on. And it may be necessary to pick up more passengers.

UGLY:-

At first i wanted to give only 4 stars, because of the simple fact that it´s nearly impossible to die for a PC in this book. But then i came to the conclusion that the point of a good roleplaying experience is the fun of it and the stakes don´t always need to be do or die.
This is a special occasion however, coming from the nature of this adventure. If it would be like this in a normal adventure i´d subtract a star.

I wonder...:
if the psychopomp ushers that the the people of the old Thrushmoor used to worship get a mention?

Marco,

It might come Friday.

Friday would make more sense.

You know, it just hit me:

spoiler:

When I was speculating above on which Great Old One the PCs would fight in this adventure, for some reason I completely forgot the King in Yellow version of Hastur in Bestiary IV. This is the "against Hastur" AP after all, and as already mentioned in this thread there's no way the PCs will be able to oppose him for real. It would be a great chance for The Unspeakable to show up and beat the ever-loving bejesus out of the party. When (if?) they wake up, they would know exactly what kind of danger they were up against. Plus there would be some cool synergy between this and when the PCs were "killed" by the Tatterman at the very beginning of this campaign.

Also, I mean, the name of this adventure. Kind of a big clue. That said, I'm wrong like all the time. We shall see soon enough.

I just want to say I'm particularly delighted by all the speculation on the Great Old One the PCs face in this adventure!

Do the PC's get Mythic power in this adventure path?

Not unless the GM adds those elements themselves, no.

I'm also not sure it's necessary for this game. Especially if you want the PCs to not have the upper hand like they would normally.

That's part of the elements of horror that need to be preserved.

I wonder what the reason behind this being moved to november is?

Mr. Lundeen likely has finished writing this long ago.

I hope an advanced copy can be provided to "The Order of the Amber Dice".

Even if he has, there's a lot more to these books than just writing the adventure. There's the book's backmatter, development, editing, art direction, layout, printing, and shipping, and likely many moving parts we customers have no clue about, any number of which can cause various complications and delays.

EDIT: Also, what makes you say it's been moved to November? The release date on this page says late October...

EDIT EDIT: Aha! You're refering to the product schedule page, aren't you?

Don't know why this was kicked back a month, but when the product description isn't updated this soon to its intended release date, that's an ill omen.

I'm all for an element of horror in any Pathfinder Campaign / Adventure Path but if the PC's have no way to win then that's really no fun for anyone and can lead to all PC's present leaving the table in frustration. That said I'm sure the challenge rating are still scaled to within reasonable levels but if the PC's end up facing off against a Great Old One at non-mythic tiers at level 10 or less then I doubt they have any way to win or come out of it alive.

I'm sure it will be more complex than that. If I had to guess, I'd say that it's more about preventing the horror in Lake Hali from awakening than about punching it to death.

(This is where Ariadnah comes in - she's a threat on the PCs' power level.)

Punching the lake! ;)

That was my take away from the plot synopsis. That said:

Spoiler:
While the Briarstone Witch will obviously be a major antagonist in this AP, I think it's Count Lowls who will be the true threat. He's established from page 1 as Guy Whom the PCs Hate, and it's his reckless actions that set into motion all the Lovecraftian madness that follows.

So how can an aristocrat 2/bard 2 be a BBEG? Two options I can think of. Either he gets a power boost and ends up gaining multiple levels, or he's outright possessed by Hastur. Perhaps even both. There's precedence for this too - Queen Ileosa was an Aristocrat 2/Bard 4 at the start of Curse of the Crimson Throne, and by the end she's a magnificently powerful character with a diabolic template thrown on for good measure.

G-Villain,

I'm 9000% sure Lowls is the guy the PCs want to punch out more than the Briarstone Witch.

Gotta say, he's quite possibly the most unlikable Pathfinder villain to date. A perfect melange of arrogant, stupid, and yeah, having a face that begs for punches. Just all the punches. At the same time he's a perfect bad guy for this particular AP. I will be most satisfied when horrible, very bad things happen to him.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

G-Villain,

I hated him before it was fashionable. I remember reading "Rule of Fear" and thinking "Oh hell no!"

Is it just me or is Lowls chinstrap and round glasses look inspired by Hugo Strange, another gentleman associated with an asylum?

djones,

No he does bear more than passing resemblance to DC villain, Hugo Strange.

The difference I feel is Strange at least has the smarts to back up his twisted mind. Lowls...doesn't.

I'd like to know where the problem with the publishing is, just so I know if we can still expect the pdf on time. I was hoping to get the third book before my game starts just because I think the GM should know what the players' actual backstories are before they start, to avoid bizarre contradictions.

The pdf won't be available earlier than the physical book.

That has never been the case.
Both will be out on november 19th, earlier if you subscribed.

That said, i have read AP #109 completely and #110 partial and consider it best if the PCs and the GM don't bother with any specific backstories at all.
A rough collection what happened is given in the first 2 books, someone in the GM sections of them has even put together a chronological timeline.

Received my email update from Paizo yesterday.
This book is delayed until November.

“Yidhra, the Dream-Witch, clouding the minds of her followers;
Dream-Witch, hiding her shape in illusion,
Dream-Witch, cloaking her shape in strange beauty...”

It would be too much to ask for us to get her and her cult statted up in this AP, wouldn't it?

I may have to get this particular book just for the information on the Sellen river.

And am I wrong or has one of the already-published books in this AP given information on Ithaqua the Wind-Wallker and his cult?

Book 1 has his stats, as well as some information. It's not nearly as much as a full-on article would have, of course. ^_^

Ithaqua is a Derleth contribution and IIRC one of the specially permitted Chaosium monsters for this AP. If he has been mentioned before it almost certainly was only in the Wake of the Watcher or whatever the title of the Carrion Crown volume that had a similar Chaosium IP rich bestiary.

Silver Crusade Contributor

He wasn't mentioned there - almost all of Chaosium's content is exclusive to this AP.

The only Chaosium content in Carrion Crown was the monsters: the dark young, the dimensional shambler, and the gnoph-keh.

It should also be noted that all of the content we got a permission to use from Chaosium is listed in the Product Identity section of the legal text on the credits page.

Thanks Kalindlara. And while it's likely impossible, I'd love to see references to Mythos material by Brian Lumley like Yibb-Tstll or Bugg-Shash -- what? I like his stuff; it has a very fantasy feel to it. Ramsey Campbell did some amazing work as well, though I suppose Glaaki is still stuck on Earth.

Too bad we can't Dark Young and Dimensional Shambler again...

But still! I look forward to seeing what we do get regardless in this adventure.

Yes Ron, we mean you. If we didn't mean you, I'd think we'd say "Ron Lundeen's father - insert name."

But again looking forward to other chapters you've written. :)

But more on point, I'm just as sorry as everyone else to hear about the delay, as I'm really looking forward to seeing how this turned out!

Our license with Chaosium does not extend to using mythos content from Lumley or Campbell for Strange Aeons, but that doesn't mean that some day in the future for some other product we can't pursue license agreements with either of them to do more with their creations in another book, I suppose. I would LOVE to do more with Campbell's creations in particular some day.

Campbell sounds like someone who would be pretty cool with seeing his creations re-used. From what I have heard Lumley is a bit more protective.

MMCJawa wrote:

I don't work for Paizo and certainly can't answer your point. I can speculate though. Maybe Paizo prefers working with Chaosium because they're pretty monolithic in terms of intellectual property, and by doing business with this fellow gaming company, Paizo gains access to more than enough Mythos goodness to suit their needs.

Trying to negotiate with other authors/companies would add complications while providing diminishing returns.

Again, purely a guess.

Ron,

So you're telling us both you and your father are called Ron? Doesn't that get confusing when you're in big groups of people?

So does that mean that the creatures licensed by Chaosium won't appear in any other adventures?

I seriously doubt that this will be out in november (which is too full with too many products anyway).
It still hasn't a product update.

I doubt they'll go two months without an AP volume. :-)

I think in the past when one AP was pushed a month the next came out at the same time. Didn't that happen for Hell's Rebels 5 and 6, (more or less) simultaneous publication?

That's correct. Also, that material cannot be reproduced like other material as per the OGL (without contacting Chaosium and getting permission). See point 7 of the OGL for how it deals with Product Identity.

The OGL wrote:

I've been an AP subscriber since Curse of the Crimson Throne. They have never gone two consecutive months without releasing a volume of their AP.

As some people have noted, this is most likely due to just not getting the data to the printer on time, or getting the printed material stateside on time. Once Paizo actually has all that Pathfinder goodness stuffed in their warehouse though? It's ready to ship.

Thanks for helping to clarify that Mister Daigle! :)

And honestly, with the Curse of the Crimson Throne tome shipping this month I'm actually quite pleased with the AP volume being delayed.
