Been waiting on this since Zerzix first did the beta version five years ago.

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 8

Thank you Liz! And wow, was it really 5 years ago? I really hope people like these as we finish these. I hope to continue on and complete monsters through Bestiary 5.

@Jeffrey Swank
Loved the beta_v23 of you had up, Hope to see more Bestiary 1 monsters in next.
(might even get another GM/player to also pick up a copy)

@ Jeffrey Swank

Hi there I love PoW and your psionics products so I'm very interested in this as well.

Though I have a question is there any central design mechanic that runs across all the "monster classes" ie manuevers and stances from path of war, that distinguish your monster classes from other third party publishers. A good example to compare would be rite publishing's In the company of series.

Hmmm I may in fact be down for this!

Approximately how many creatures are planned for this series?

The monster classes in here are closer to what we saw in the 3.5/3.0 Savage Species. Essentially it's the same monsters you see in the Bestiary books, but they're broken down to individual levels.

Wow this sounds fantastic.

I'll most likely pick up the WIP next week.

Is there any information concerning releases you could share?

At this very moment, I have 30 completed from the Bestiary 1. If all goes well, I plan on putting out a similar amount from B2, B3, B4, and B5. :)

Kevin is correct. No underlining link to PoW (other than Heritage feats) or other psionic products with regard to mechanics. These are designed so that at each level the monster is as balanced as can be, but robust in its monster flavor. They are broken down over the amount of levels per original creation HD and abilities are made level appropriate. New feats, race traits, and spells are included to flesh out the monster classes. Again, this is very close to what was done previously in Savage Species--in terms of mechanics.

What monsters are currently available?

Just the astral deva.

Thank you.

So this will provide a base race to go with the class then?

How functional will the classes be if used with a common race rather than the class specific race?

Not exactly sure what you mean. A human can't take levels of ogre class. Each monster will start out as a base race (based on the racial points of the Advanced Race Guide), and then take levels of the monster class until they become their standard version found in the Bestiary.

Say I have human and by GM fiat was allowed to take say levels of succubus. Would that still work mechanically?

Hey NPC,

In short, I would say that a human should not take levels in pseudodragon (or whatever monster class), as they are both a form of a race. Now, to answer your question a bit more thoroughly, I would say to use a monster class, a character must take the monster's race and it's monster class as their initial character level. Each monster class has an associated race; instead of selecting a normal race, the character gains the benefits and drawbacks of the monster race associated with their chosen monster class. A character normally cannot take levels in more than one monster class, as well as a normal race cannot take levels in a monster class without being that monster classes race. I write the word, "normally" in the above sentence because who am I to say what you or your GM want to allow in your game? :)

Typically a character may multiclass freely between their monster class and other classes, and is not required to finish their monster class to completion... A character with relatively few monster levels might be a runt compensating for their relative weakness with training, a freak of nature, or perhaps a magical experiment gone wrong.

However, mechanically speaking, a character should not have levels in more than one monster class, just as they should not have more than one base race. Hope that clears it up? (Or did I muddy the water even more?)

-Jeff

You're good. Thank you. I was just hoping one could use it as a transformative class. Ala, Acolyte of the Skin, Green Star Adept, Elemental Savant, and similar. Don't mind me.

Any chance you could tell us the next monster to be release?

Do these classes cap out at the hit die of the monsters they represent?

The majority will, yes. There may be an exception here or there if the creature was actually originally a template, and not a base creature.

Just want to pop in and say that an updated PDF has been submitted - it includes the introductory text that was supposed to be in the document but got accidentally excluded, as well as some other minor fixes (the skill list, some formatting corrections, etc.)

Once Paizo staff has had a chance to review, it should be immediately available to those who bought the work-in-progress, as well as the individual astral deva.

As to which is next - I'll have to check with the project leads on which monster is on deck.

Thanks Jeremy! (He is awesome to work with) As to which monster will be released next...I will have to get back to you on that. :) But, will let you know soon--very soon.

While I won't say it's a 100% guarantee, it is very likely it will be available in print, yes.

In other news - the Erinyes should be out this week!

These will be very very useful for my planar setting focusing on outsiders and afterlives.

Are each of these classes a full 20 level progression or do they reach their level equivalent and then has levels open for multiclassing? Also, is VMC a viable option with the monster classes?

The NPC wrote:

Not a dev but, each goes for levels around the same as their HD, you can multiclass at any point after taking your first level. No VMC has been released as of the current moment.... and flavouring such VMC would be weird in a lot of cases....

Not what I meant. I mean would the current VMC options work well with the monster classes?

The NPC wrote:

I can see it working, I mean, barbarian VCM would be good for any martial based monster class without many SLA and Summoner VMC to play something like a devil who has a small number of fiends it can call into play would work rather well.

Any plans on doing this for 5e?

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 8

NPC,
In short, yes. The VMC would work as normal, but those rules were not particularly intended to be used with these classes when we started this project. Use them as alternate rules as you see fit. :)

Dustin,
In terms of 5e, no plans in the works for this project to be converted. The difference between PF and 5e is beyond the scope of this project currently. :)

The concept of an Astral Deva and an Aasimar PC as a parent and child in the same party interests me.

Oh. Didn't know that had an abbreviation. Makes sense. And yeah, I can definitely see it working.

Is there some kind of schedule for the releases of this product?

Not exactly sure of what order these will make it out. Depends on the art being finalized. At this moment we have released Astral Deva and Erinyes.

Next up is Ghoul.

Classes currently in art/layout:
Bugbear
Centaur
Deathless Ghost
Dryad
Earth Elemental
Harpy
Gnoll
Harpy
Hill Giant
Hound Archon
Imp
Janni
Lizardfolk
Medusa
Minotaur
Mummy
Ogre
Pseudodragon
Rakshasa
Satyr
Sentient Flesh Golem
Succubus
Treant
Troglodyte
Troll
True Dragons (Black, Blue, Green, Red, White, Copper, Brass, Bronze, Gold, Silver)
Winter Wolf

These are the classes that have been fleshed out with new traits, racial feats, heritage feats, and so on. We will be combining some of the smaller classes into multi-release to keep document word count near the same.

I am super stoked about this. This has been my primary holdout from 3.5 to Pathfinder. I may finally make the leap.

Ugh, wish the site was working so I could get the ghosts and ghoul classes.

I've had those emails get caught in filters before, so that might be why you didn't get the notice.

You said Harpy twice.
