Nothing fancy, but gets the job done.

3/5

Paizo makes a lot of flip-mats for wilderness encounters: there's Bigger Forest, Winter Forest, Woodlands, a Forest Multi-Pack, and probably more. The one I'm reviewing here is simply Forest, and there's not a lot to say about it. One side presents a crossroads, with paths heading north, south, east, and west, with trees in the four corners ("a woodland environment perfect for a scenic ambush"). It could work if the PCs are on a well-travelled path through a dense forest. The other side features a more complex arrangement of paths, with little features such as signposts, a campfire, and (most notably) a large rift in the ground. I prefer less distinctive features for generic maps so that they're more reusable ("oh, there's that rift again!"). The packaging says this is a "stream winding through woods near a druidic circle", but they obviously got this map confused with another one. In any event, it's a reasonably well-done flip-mat--nothing exciting or special, but it'll get the job done when you need a grid for a quick forest encounter.

As with all Paizo flip-mats, it takes dry erase, wet erase, and even permanent markers, and cleans up nicely afterwards.

Running forest games? You NEED this map!

5/5

Thank Iomedae that Paizo had the foresight to start the Flip-Mat Classics line and release these essential maps to those of us that missed them the first time around. The Forest flip-mat is one of those essential maps.

If you're running anything forest or woodland based, you will use this map over and over and over again. Add it to your collection alongside the Woodlands map, the forest trails, ambush sites, bigger forest and the trail side of the Keep Flip-mat for a never ending array of wooded settings for your table!

Most frequently used map

5/5

If you ever do wilderness encounters, this will see a lot of use at the table. This is one of my most frequently used map along with "Woodlands". For me, Woodlands has a tiny bit more utility with the cave and river, but the Forest crossroad is also really high on the list and combines perfectly with the Woodlands road.

I disagree with the prior reviewer. This flip map does work well with the Woodlands map, even if the art differs slightly. Your players will not care. That's a pretty minor nit-pick.

MUCH BRIGHTER THAN THE ORIGINAL ONE!

4/5

THE GOOD:
This map is very usable if your players are traveling through woods from one location to another.
One side depicts a few footpaths worming through a wood with 2 roadsign posts pointing in 4 different directions. It also has a campfire at the side of a path.
The other side has a large clearing (10x10 squares)in the middle of a crossroads surrounded by trees.
This version is much better than the original one which was way too dark.

THE BAD:
I could do without the mysterious crack in the earth behind a large bush with 13 red blossoms in it.

THE UGLY:
Sadly i can´t see how this could combine with the actual "Forest Dangers" map pack in a good way and it also can not be combined with the "Woodlands" Flip Mat Classics from last month because the trees are different.

All in all a great forest map for a lot of occasions!

Hey ... is it me ... or do these look a little "different" than the original releases? (I'm not upset or complaining mind you, I kinda like the (possible) new look).

Might "need" this.

Also, looking forward to the "bigger" basic flip-mat.

The maps themselves are essentially the same (the tiny text on each map has been updated), but the packaging is the newer wraparound cover instead of the old "bag with header card."

The 8 that were just announced are the only 8 planned at the moment. Response to these will help determine whether there might be more!

I love what you´re doing but i have a quick question:

people complain that the original forest map is way too dark and you can not see dry erase markers good on it.
Will this version be brighter or exactly the same as the old one?

Thx for your time.

It has a bit better contrast than the original—the darker parts are just slightly lighter than the original, and the light parts are a little more noticably lighter. But we're talking very small steps here.

None the less - great!

Thx for your quick answer Vic! :-)

Port delays.

FWIW, it would suit me down to the ground if refinements like this (and I appreciate they're tiny changes) were advertised in the product descriptions. I haven't really been following this line, since I assumed they were completely identical to the originals (barring branding).

I'm unlikely to get flipmats which are pure reprints, however even a tiny improvement like this is sufficient to get another sale out of me.

Either the description or the name for this map looks wrong. The description matches the one for Flip-Mat: Deep Forest, but the images look like Flip-Mat: Forest.

Who is the cartographer on these?

Corey Macourek.

Can anyone confirm that the squares on this guy are actually one-inch? I purchased Flip Mat Classics: Ship, only to discover that the squares were ~3-4% smaller than an inch. >:(
