Batten the hatches and sail off toward the horizon on this classic four-deck ship—fully equipped with cannons, sleeping quarters, cargo holds, and more. With the rolling expanse of the deep blue sea on the flip side, you'll be ready for all manner of nautical adventures!
The most-popular Pathfinder Flip-Mats in history return! These fan-favorite maps feature versatile adventure settings—city streets, forests, ships, taverns, and more—and now they're back for a repeat performance. Durable and lavishly detailed, these essential adventure set pieces are sure to bring excitement to your game table for years to come!
A special coating on each Flip-Mat allows you to use wet erase, dry erase, AND permanent markers with ease! Removing permanent ink is easy—simply trace over any permanent mark with a dry erase marker, wait 10 seconds, then wipe off both marks with a dry cloth or paper towel. Each Flip-Mat measures 24" x 30" unfolded, and 8" x 10" folded.
My players would never proclaim artistry as my strong-suit when it comes to running games, so I've been happy to gradually build up a small collection of Pathfinder Flip-Mats. Ship is my newest purchase, and on the main side it features four decks of a fairly large (110 feet long) vessel armed with six cannons and featuring plenty of cargo space, while the the flip side is blank but for a watery background.
I'm not sure if the ship should be classified as a light warship or a heavily-armed merchant ship, but the flexibility is an asset for GMs. The lowest deck (the hold) is well-detailed with barrels, crates, bags, oil lamps, and even a straw-filled pen for animals. The next deck (moving from low to high) features the six cannons (with little piles of cannonballs!), sleeping quarters at the bow with six bunks, and an officer's cabin in the stern with a desk, chairs, a bookcase, and more. It's all drawn with great detail, with my favourite touch being the "grid" of light coming from the hatches above. The main deck has a storage room in the bow and another officer's cabin in the stern. I really like the added touch of a rowboat as well. I think it would have been better to have a galley, a brig, or something else instead of two officer's cabins that are essentially the same. I also found it difficult to distinguish the stairs going up from the stairs going down. The fourth and final deck is a bit odd as the center part is actually the same as the center part of the main deck, but the bow and stern are the raised levels above the storage room and officer's quarters, respectively. When I used this flip-mat during a recent session, it was hard to decide on which of the two upper decks to have the tokens on, since they're quite literally showing the same place. Still, despite the minor confusion of the stairs and the same/different decks, having the Ship flip-mat was a major improvement on what I could do on my own with a marker.
The other side, with the water background, seems dull but I actually really like it. It's not just a flat blue, but instead has different lighting and "texture" effects so it looks like the surface of the ocean. I'll definitely use it anytime I have an encounter on a lake, ocean, or even wide river.
So, quibbles aside, this is one of the best of the Pathfinder Flip-Mats I've purchased. Admittedly, I haven't had a lot of water encounters in the games I've run, but when I do, this will come out of storage.
This is a great map -- I used to own the original -- but when I tried to use a printed ship tile (from the excellent Map Pack: Boats and Ships) in conjunction with the water side, I made an unpleasant discovery: The squares aren't an inch. They're ~4-5% too small. Not an issue if you're going to use the map by itself, but if you want use it with another flip-mat, or say, overlay some dungeon tiles, the squares don't line up.
As much as I love the idea of bringing back classic flip-mats, the square sizing issue is simply too big a blow to usability for me. Hopefully Paizo gets this sorted out for future flip-mat classics releases.
THE GOOD:
On one side you get a ship 22 squares long and 4 squares broad with 3 decks plus the rigging (which you could use as 4 different ships in a harbor or lenghtside each other).
On the other side you get a blank water map which can be used for either sea battles or in conjunction with coastal maps like "Waterfront Tavern", "Seedy Tavern","Pub Crawl", "Warship", "Redlight District" or in place of the "Basic Terrain Multi Pack" if you only need a water background.
YES! Oh my god! This map gets used SOOOOO much in PFS and I'll be glad to actually have it as opposed to the crappy paper copy I assembled. Thank you for reprinting this one!
Awesome to see that you guys are reprinting some of the older maps. Totally understand why the hesitation in a reprint but it does help people that didn't get these the first time around.
(count me as a person who'd like to see "Town Square" reprinted!!)
The squares on this map aren't actually an inch; they're ~4% too small. Perhaps not a big deal to some, but since I regularly mix flip mats, several different brands of tiles, and other one-inch-grid-based accessories, it's problematic for me. Regretfully, I won't be picking up anything else in the line until the problem is corrected, so I'm posting here in the hopes that it can be.

Shameless bump. I'd really like to know if this has been corrected for the rest of the line...

I believe it has not. I grabbed a ruler and my two latest flip-mat classics last night (city streets and prison) and found that both were smaller than true inch squares.

That's unfortunate, but thank you very much for checking! :-)
