I was looking through scenarios and thought "hey I should review some of these that I've seen" and it took me several minutes of remembering this one to wrap my head around it again. It's a good/fascinating read for a GM, a lot takes place in a mindscape, so it's best suited for a group of people who will appreciate it versus a bunch of people perhaps at a con at 8am after playing until 2am who may get frustrated and make statements like "huh, I don't get what's going on? where am I again? what do I see?".

With the right GM and right players, this could be 4 stars. With the wrong GM or one or more pesky players who won't invest, it could end up 1.5 stars.

Pathfinder Society Scenario #7–01: Between the Lines (PFRPG) PDF

Other reviewers are spot on below.
It uses elements from Occult Adventures, so GMs will want to have access to that book or the relevant sections of the PRD during prep and possibly while running the table. Because of that, this scenario can get a little "heady" for murderhobo type PCs. Though... The second half, in particular, is unique. However, it doesn't fully execute on its ambition—not all parties are well suited to it, but more notably, many players aren't going to enjoy the particular type of adventure this provides. There are places where the mechanics for moving between areas are just inconsistent enough to create confusion.

When I was prepping to run this, I was excited—it's really really cool. But when I ran it, my party just couldn't wrap their heads around what was going on at all. Some of that is surely me, but I've had success running weird scenarios before, and some of it is also due to the scenario.

If you've got a group that likes to think, this is definitely for them. I wouldn't recommend it for a group of murderhobos, though, or for a group that hasn't gotten enough sleep.

Pathfinder Society Scenario #7–01: Between the Lines (PFRPG) PDF

This ambitious scenario has some excellent moments.
As a season opener this scenario is a bit odd, touching not at all on the ongoing Aspis war (though definitely including the unexpectedly-prevalent occult subtheme). Beyond that however, this is a fun and innovative 1-5 scenario that I would be happy to run again.

Divided roughly into two halves, I appreciate how the first section of the scenario allows for options. While in many ways the general structure is a series of 'fetch quests', it's easy enough to have a choice in which encounters to experience and there are enough differences between them to make those choices matter. (Between being a player and behind the screen I experienced all of them).

Still, if the first half is a solid execution of a standard scenario, the second half is where Between the Lines shines. The setting our Pathfinders find themselves in is incredibly unique, which in turn leads to very unexpected encounters for a low level party. I was initially apprehensive about how the roleplaying in this half would go (as much of it is done in a limited if creative manner), but my players managed to really get into the spirit of it and communicated quite well with their target. Most delightful to me however, was that this scenario also does an excellent job in fleshing out the Venture Captain giving you your assignment. Given how much players eye-roll at the obstruction and ineptness of their V.C.s, I appreciated how much one of them is humanized here, and look forward to seeing Wulessa Yuul again.

It's not perfect: the first act is fine but standard, and the final encounter is a bit underwhelming, especially considering how much the scenario wants to make even risking facing it a meaningful choice. But overlooking a few flaws, this is a fun and engaging scenario with a epic feel that many low-tier scenarios never quite reach.

Pathfinder Society Scenario #7–01: Between the Lines (PFRPG) PDF

GM'd this on low tier and played on high tier.

First you get to do some chores, and after that you get to traverse an interesting location of sorts. Sounds simple and easy, right? Well, it's slightly more complicated. The location of the second part is completely different than what you'd expect. It's mindblowing and an interesting way to start this new season and celebrate some of the recent releases. It's certainly unique and a really nice angle for a scenario. Bravo to that!

It's obvious that the idea behind the scenario is solid. The execution, however, is lacking and at times completely frustrating and simply no fun. Early on, there's a small mini-game, should the party choose to. When I say small, I mean it could be small if every player wants to participate. In our case only one player decided to participate because of valid reasons. Sadly that meant that the next 15 minutes (if not more!) were just him and the GM rolling dice while the rest was doing nothing. Any immersion that was there was lost. I really should not have to point out why that's a major design flaw.

Speaking of rolling dice, having to roll dice to progress sounds fun on paper. However, both succeeding and failing should mean something tangible. In this case, failing didn't do anything other than a 'try again!'. That means you again risk the chance of having to keep rolling until finally the result is good enough. My party, through sheer bad luck, had to roll over 24 times (and come up with over 24 different reasons to do so) in order to finally be able to progress at some point. Again, that's more frustrating than fun. Out of character we know enough to progress and it's only time before we get the right roll. We might be 'unique' in that situation, but even having the option there to have this happen is honestly bad design. It became extremely tedious and frustrating. Once more all momentum and immersion is lost.

Given that second point, I can understand why people chose the 'easy' way out. They just wanted to be done with it and seized the opportunity when it presented itself. Honestly, they didn't miss out on much. The final fight was utterly lacklustre compared to the two fights before that one, both of which were more than rather challenging. I know there's a different early season 7 scenario that's described as 'potentially lethal', but it honestly feels not as threatening as this scenario when played on low tier. I can easily see a TPK happen here.

I'm sorry for being harsh and blunt, but I'm going to have to say that while the idea was great, the execution was simply not good. The intention and potential are there, yet it just didn't work out for anyone present at the table. I can not recommend this scenario, though I will say that this scenario features a place that's rather interesting to visit for sure. That alone gives it an extra star.

Pathfinder Society Scenario #7–01: Between the Lines (PFRPG) PDF

Between the Lines is comprised of two parts.
Product- Pathfinder Society Scenario #7–01: Between the Lines
System- Pathfinder
Producer- Paizo
Price- $3.99
TL; DR- DnD-NOW WITH LSD! 92%

Basics-You’ve been summoned to help procure an item. Fortunately, you know where it is, and even better, who has it. They will even sell it to you! What happens when you get what you want, and it does way more than you hoped for? What happens when you play with an ancient box that stores the mental history of all who used it before?

Mechanics or Crunch-This is two adventures in one. The first adventure is the standard one you know and love. Run some errands, and then you get what you were searching for. That’s all par for the course. The second half is crazy, out there fun. You enter a mental landscape. That’s fine, but the map and the monsters are a bit off, and a bit more front loading and modifying of stat blocks would help GMs run this on the fly. It’s not horrible, and if you read ahead (like you are supposed to!), you will be fine. However, if you’re running this after just printing off your adventure, then you as a GM will be a bit lost. 4.5/5

Theme or Fluff- As I said in mechanics, this is two adventures. Half is in the regular world, and that is something your players can easily grab onto. This part is here more to help draw your players in. The real meat of the adventure is the second part. Here is where things go on and off the rails. On rails because the players progress through a linier dream landscape, but have to do so in a specific order. Off rails because this adventure plays like a LSD trip-and it is amazing! Lot’s a crazy imagery and fun ways for the GM to really ham up the crazy, psychic nature of the adventure. I absolutely love this adventure for that. 5/5

Execution-This adventure has your usual Pathfinder Society polish. What I don’t like is how the monsters are not customized to the adventure. The players fight some crazy dream monsters, but the monsters are not really customized to the purpose at hand. It’s ok, but it wouldn’t take much to really fix up the monsters here, so you’re GMs don’t have extra math to fight with. This adventure will be a bit long if the players and the GM are slow. Honestly, its about ¾ of two different adventures, so if your GM doesn’t manage his or her time properly, you will be done late if this is run at a convention slot. I’m complaining that there is too much here, which is a good problem to have, but it can be a major problem if not dealt with properly. 4.25/5

Summary-Occult Adventures kicked off this season of Pathfinder Society, and it shows in here. This isn’t completely a psychic adventure as it got strange occult influences, and I hope this keeps up through the entire season of Pathfinder Society. This is a crazy adventure that really provides some great roleplaying opportunities as well as some great scenes for players and GMs to just go hog wild with. I love what I see here, and I can’t wait for more. It’s not perfect. I’d like a bit of customization from Paizo for the monsters as a GM who has missed some important information might try to throw CR 6 creatures at a level one party if the miss the section detailing how the encounter changes. It hurts the overall presentation a bit, but honestly, I had a blast running this adventure. If this is any indication of what’s coming next, BRING ON THE STRANGE! 92%

Pathfinder Society Scenario #7–01: Between the Lines (PFRPG) PDF

Originally posted at [url="www.throatpunchgames.com"], a new idea everyday!

If this is any indication of what’s coming next, BRING ON THE STRANGE! 92%
fine_young_misanthrope2015-08-26T02:52:25ZPathfinder Society Scenario #7–01: Between the Lines (PFRPG) PDF: Average scenario (3 stars)skysharkhttps://paizo.com/products/btpy9cu3?Pathfinder-Society-Scenario-7-01-Between-the-Lines2015-08-18T14:31:58Z
Pathfinder Society Scenario #7–01: Between the Lines (PFRPG) PDF

I ran this last week for my store. The players had a good mix of levels between 1 and 3. They played low tier, and after pulling some GM punches, prevented their untimely deaths in the mindscape. If a party does not have a healer for this scenario a low tier, there is a very high chance for a TPK.

There is also an error written in the scenario.

Party was Fighter 1, Oracle (Life) 4, Ranger 1 and Unchained Rogue 1. A mixed party of experienced and new players.

The first half of this scenario plays out like any other but then twists into a weird story that seems designed to set up season 7 as year of the Occult Adventures. First half was fun but the second half just felt a little too weird. Everyone enjoyed the session though, myself included, so I cannot say that it wasn't enjoyable.

If we had any grumbles it was simply that some of the fights are just far too difficult for a low tier party. Damage Reduction that high was impossible for my players to meet so they had to seriously think outside of the box. I did grow concerned that the table was going to be a TPK before we even got half way.

This is not a scenario for inexperienced players.

GM'ed this tonight at low tier. Party was Fighter 1, Oracle (Life) 4, Ranger 1 and Unchained Rogue 1. A mixed party of experienced and new players.

The first 1/3 or so was fine. Fairly normal "do favor for a favor" stuff. Interesting encounters, a bit of roleplaying. Solid if not spectacular. Almost the entire group decided to NO WAY IN HECK to do the one gambling encounter but the gnome persevered so he did it essentially alone.

Then came the second part. Interesting idea but it definitely started to drag. We knew more or less what was happening but still had to stay on the tracks. It got a bit frustrating as nothing we did seemed to really matter. And, once you know what is happening [Spoiler omitted]

While it was fine as a one off I do NOT want to see any similar stuff soon. Year 6 was known locally as "the year of the robot" or "the year of the adamantine sword". I really hope that Year 7 does NOT become

New GMs should not choose this for their first scenario, nor should anyone ever run this cold, but a well prepped GM can make this scenario shine.
It was interesting. It ran about 4.5 to 5 hours but it really felt much longer. The beginning started off as a great low-level typical go fetch type scenario, reminds me of my days of First Steps part one, was a good bit of nostalgia. I kept waiting to get ambushed by the Aspis Consortium because they wanted our cool relic we bought.

Turns out, nope. This scenario pulled an Australia, the movie, and decided to go through 3 acts and then start anew again with 3 more acts!

I am pretty sure the author had two great ideas but was only allowed to do one scenario. That or he had one scenario already written and was then told to add that second bit about the mindscape stuff.

All in all, had a fun set up and seems simple enough and then just rams a bunch of difficult and confusing rules and maps down the players through.

Tldr: I was happy at first hoping scenarios would harken back to the days of old when things were simple and then got slapped in the face by difficult and time consuming nonsense.

Pathfinder Society Scenario #7–01: Between the Lines (PFRPG) PDF

This is from the player point of view and it was in tier 4-5 with 6, more 5's then 4.

First couple of runs were 3.5 to 4 hours, by my third run of it I had the run time down to two and a half hours. This is not a scenario to do cold. There is just too much going on. If you have a well prepared GM this should easily fit into a four hour time slot. If the GM has only casually prepared be prepared for a long scenario. I definitely like the flavor of the scenario and it has fun concepts. The first half could have been shortened a task or two in order to leave more time for the "fun" part.

Pathfinder Society Scenario #7–01: Between the Lines (PFRPG) PDF

I had the opportunity to run four tables of this at GenCon.
