Freeport is one of the classic city settings of fantasy roleplaying and it’s back—bigger and better—in this monstrous new sourcebook for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. Clocking in at a massive 544 pages, Freeport: The City of Adventure lovingly details a metropolis that mixes fantasy tropes, piracy, and Lovecraftian horror into an action packed setting for your RPG campaign. The city is now more detailed than ever, with added locations, characters, hooks, and a brand new, full-length adventure. The book, featuring a cover by fan favorite artist Wayne Reynolds and a fold-out map of the city, also includes full rules support for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: new classes, archetypes, feats, and magic items. As always you can use Freeport on its own or drop it into your campaign setting of choice. So set sail for Freeport, mateys! Come for the pirates, stay for the cosmic horror!

A colossal tome of epic urban, Lovecraftian, & nautical adventure!

5/5

Having happily played in bits & pieces of Freeport modules back in the 3.5 days, I was glad to finally purchase this gargantuan PDF in order to have a detailed, comprehensive scope of Freeport in its full Pathfinder glory. And in that regard, this Green Ronin publishing endeavour delivers ... HARDCORE. As it stands, there are a number of Green Ronin Freeport products for sale at Paizo and places like RPGNow that are edition-neutral, 3.X-only or PF-rules. This book supercedes all of them, I believe. And gives a good starting-point core rulebook for new Pathfinder Freeport supplements (like the excellent Dark Deeds in Freeport).

This 544 page rulebook has absolutely jawdropping eye-candy in regards to fonts, coloration, layout & art. I love books like this that with pure aesthetics alone, gives a GM electric inspiration right off the bat. Coupled with the flavorful fluff and storytelling, I'm fairly hard-pressed to find a sourcebook that has immersed me this fast and this deep upon first read.

I love how every single district and "location of interest" in Freeport has delightfully wonderful drill-down minutiae. Because this is a city not meant to briefly carouse through for your characters ... it's meant as a destination city where PCs can't wait to get out of bed and see who's behind each door and lurking deep in the bowels of the sewers.

Besides all the tasty fluff, there's about 130 pages dedicated to Freeport's proprietary crunch. New races, tweaked races, new classes, new feats/traits/skill-uses and a very cool Insanity/Madness system all populate this section. And they all do a great job at melding the playing atmosphere into one where Lovecraft, piracy, urban intrigue and port culture are all thematically interweaved into one extremely riveting campaign setting where you can simultaneously smell salt and blood wafting through air.

I'm a big fan of new spells and magical items in my 3PP PDF products. And this 32 page section also gets 5 stars from me - especially for the creativity and theme-appropriateness. The stat blocks and game balance components of all the spells and goodies look well-crafted and error-free.

As for the Ironjack Legacy adventure in the tail end of the book, I'll have to figure out a way to shoe-horn this into my current Forgotten Realms campaign. But it looks easy enough and I love how it emphasizes the PCs having to tour Freeport to get a good overall strategic assessment of the city's cartography. Very nice.

As with all 500+ page books, I'm gonna need a few more sit-down sessions in order to get full absorption of all the little things I missed in the first few reads (and there's a metric ton of minutiae in this book). It's one of the few RPG sourcebooks I feel comfortable with just reading as a leisure/entertainment book outside of its campaign setting utility.

any expected arrival date?

Will this be available to purchase at PaizoCon?

Contributor

I believe Chris Pramas said it would not be at PaizoCon.

Chris Pramas had originally envisioned having a booth to sell things at PaizoCon, and obviously wanted to premiere his new Pathfinder-specific stuff at that show. As it happens Green Ronin won't have a booth, so that's not going to happen.

The backers have seen the text (though there is still time for use to make changes if we need to), the art is arriving as we speak, but it hasn't been sent off to print yet.

I just lucked out and someone gave up their slot to Return to Freeport at PaizoCon and I picked it up! That had been one of my only fours in the lottery. I am so happy to have gotten in. Can,t wait to play!

Just noticed that this got pushed from a November release on Amazon to a December release. Any official word on the actual street date of this puppy?

No, a final date has not been announced yet. Here's Chris' most recent update on the subject:
"Freeport, The City of Adventure for the Pathfinder RPG: Speaking of Kickstarters, we've also been hard at work on the new Freeport book. This is a new core book for our classic city setting, and it too has been customized for the Pathfinder RPG. At 512 pages, it will also be the biggest book we've ever published! This is in the final stages of production. Very shortly now, we should be releasing the PDF to Kickstarter backers. Then we'll release that to the public and put the book up for pre-order. After a final errata check, it will go to print. We'll announce a final release date when we have something from the printer."

Cool. Green Ronin is great at producing quality content. Glad to hear that this book is getting as much attention to being as perfect as possible for its release.

Liberty's Edge

Was it ever confirmed if there will be a Harcover/PDF bundle option.

Like many game companies, Green Ronin generally offers pdf/print bundles at a discount only under specific circumstances. People who pre-ordered on the GR site even until recently got the pdf for $5. I don't know that a reduced-price bundle will be available here (though i don't know it won't either).

Ya know, every time I've seen anything about this supplement over the years, it always immediately makes me think of EverQuest.

Has there been any update to this? I just learned about Freeport, so of course I couldn't get in on the Kickstarter ..... but is there a release date yet for this? Will that map they offered during the Kickstarter be available for purchase?

The "penultimate" .pdf was sent to bakers, and we just entered out last round of corrections.
So, soon.

With Christmas knocking on the door and funds low, can anyone give me a reasonably estimate on the release date?

Scarab Sages

Does it include firearms rules from the pirate's guide? I like them better than the official PF gun rules.

DragonBelow wrote:

Kind of. We included Freeport firearms as a specific kind of firearm that use slightly different rules than normal Pf firearms. The Freeport firearms work more like Freeport firearms have in the past, but are a set of designs uncommon outside Freeport.

Dark Archive

Any idea what the release date will be? I am hoping to.use the discount from my christmas card to order this but can't yet because its preorder.

Does Lord Defender Thorgrim stay an eldritch knight or did he get redone as a magus?

Will there be Hero Lab support for this? Urban settings are one of my weaknesses!

Yep!

I'm planning to buy this hardcover for a friend. I believe his favorite 3.5 book was Privateer Presses Five Fingers source book. For those unfamiliar Five Fingers is a series of Islands that's a haven for Pirates, outlaws, and general scum/villainy. I figure this book would probably scratch a similar itch for him since our play group abandoned 3.5

So I have a few questions:

Would I get that map and if not will I be able to purchase one?
Also will this book work for Dark Deeds in Freeport or do I need the old book?
How long will the print+PDF discount combo be available on the Green Ronin site?
About when would the shipment for the pre-order go out? I can't purchase yet, so I was wondering about when I would see my card get charged if I pre-ordered.

Weird question: is the adventure run at PaizoCon last year included in this book?

Sort of an off-topic question for this, but this is the first I heard about this going the Kickstarter route. Was it done that way just because Green Ronin felt like doing it that way or was it done that way because Green Ronin is in financial trouble and could not afford to make such an expensive book without having backers first?

Oh, and I have the 3rd edition version of the setting and I think it is great and really hope Green Ronin will be able to update it to 5th edition rules one day. :)

If memory serves, it was done via Kickstarter primarily to assess interest, since Green Ronin hasn't ever done much in the way of Pathfinder releases.

That is good because they never seemed to be in any sort of trouble to me, or else they would have never gotten the DC license for M&M.

This was done as a Kickstarter because Green Ronin wanted to see what the market for a major Freeport update done exclusively for Pathfinder way. The setting has fans in multiple game systems, and GR hadn't done Pathfinder-compatible books for a while.

Making a 544 page book is a HUGE risk, no matter what size the company ism, so doing something this big, with this much new material, full color interior, and so on, only made sense if there was a clear demand for it.

It's also a great opportunity to get feedback, which included things like ans mentioning they wanted to see someone with a great deal of Pathfinder-specific experience involved (which is how I ended up on this project). You can invite feedback on a website, but Kickstarter programs that raise tens of thousands of dollars simply have a much higher level of visibility.

Not to mention licenses such as Dragon Age and Song of Ice and Fire!

The one Chris ran? I don't think that was the same as the adventure we put in here, although this book DOES have a brand-new introductory adventure in it.

Chris kinda knows Freeport well enough to not need a formal adventure write-up to set games there. :)

Do you mean any map of the city, or specifically a poster map?

Insain Dragoon wrote:

Work for it how?

Insain Dragoon wrote:

I honestly don't know. Our Grand Ronin is away for a bit, and he might take it down as soon as he gets back (which I think is this week).

Insain Dragoon wrote:

If you order it through Paizo, you'd have to get Paizo to answer questions about when your card will be charged. Since their answer may be "as soon we get the books from GR," and the books are on a boat right now, no one may have a firm answer.

Map: This one. Since I didn't pledge to the Kickstarter will I have any chance to obtain one?

In the product description for Dark Deeds it says

Product Page wrote:
To run it, the GM needs access to Pirate’s Guide to Freeport and the Freeport Companion: Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Edition. (You’ll definitely want the Freeport Companion's optional Insanity Point rules for this one!)

Since this book is not the same book as the old Freeport Companion I was curious.

Print+PDF: Oh dang that's a shame :(

Shipment: Ok, well maybe I'll have a shot then if they're still on a boat.

Print/PDF bundles on Paizo.com are solely at the discretion of the publisher, as is the availability of PDFs.

If you place a preorder, your payment method will get authorized (to make sure it's valid), and the authorization should drop off after a few days. Your card won't be charged until your order ships from our warehouse.

The Green Ronin site says, "When you place your pre-order we will offer you the PDF version for just $5 when you check out. This same order is available through participating Pre-Order Plus retailers."

Is Paizo a "Pre-Order Plus" retailer?

Not at this moment.

WANT!

As a Kickstarter supporter, I can't wait for my book to arrive from China. Ironically, it sounds like it's currently stuck at sea waiting to get into port. Probably the Brotherhood of the Yellow Sign at work.

Yeah, if I had access to some REAL Freeport pirates, we could just go TAKE the book!
But as it is, we wait.
