I found Lodge to be extremely overrated. Sure, there is 5 minutes of roleplay with Valais at the start. Sure, a witty puzzle. And the end had a little twist.

Having said that, it wasn’t that entertaining.

There's not much I can say that hasn't already been said. The NPC is fantastic, the fights are cool and use interesting environments, the setting is great, and the atmosphere is AMAZING. This is probably one of the creepiest scenarios I've played so far, and it works. In fact, everything in this scenario just clicks together to form something greater than the sum of its parts, I feel. Highly recommended.

One thing though: the main villain will be a lot creepier if you've played a certain Season 7 scenario. As it is right now, she's kinda faceless, but I managed to connect the dots and suddenly the implications became a lot more interesting.

Pathfinder Society Scenario #5–09: The Traitor’s Lodge (PFRPG) PDF

(I played this.)

Why? Good thing you asked:

1) Plot - The story is absolutely fantastic and unique. It has some hooks/references to other scenarios/events but is solidly able to stand on it's own without character or player knowledge of the others. The environment this little adventure takes place in simply oozes with the creepy vibe you want the characters to feel. The sinister nature of the area can be played up by the GM to great effect, and there is the potential for danger for even the most optimized of PC groups.

2) NPC - You'll know the one when you play/GM it... There is just SOOOO much potential. SOOOOOOOOOO much potential.

3) Encounters - Awesome. Only one I would say is of standard "look monsters" fare, all the others have something very unique about them. The BBEGs (as I'd say there are 2) are both AWESOME. There is a nice combination of combat and skill/knowledge based encounters as well.

4) Chronicle sheet for PFS has something other then yet another +1 cloak of resistance on it. Very cool. (sorry no spoilers here...)

5) This scenario's main area of exploration and investigation is able to be built with Dwarven Forge (or other brand) terrain pieces to good effect. Obviously that shouldn't be a concern of scenario designers, but I like being able to use them every once in a while even for PFS games. Especially when it's a custom map and not an existing flip-mat.

Thumbs up all the way for this one!

Pathfinder Society Scenario #5–09: The Traitor’s Lodge (PFRPG) PDF

As I was prepping to run this scenario again; I have to say, this is one of my all time favorite scenarios. Why? Good thing you asked:

From the description it's pretty obvious that this is a scenario where you are tasked with finding evidence and proof of mischief. You know there's some sort of mystery you have to unravel. This means that it comes to whether or not this evil plot is strong and fleshed out enough to last the entire session. In other words: is it not only interesting enough, but also able to tie everything together in a logical way?

Without a doubt I feel comfortable saying that this is indeed the case for this scenario. The first word that comes to mind when thinking back to this scenario is the word unique. It really stands apart from other sinister plots I've encountered so far. It is a kind of evil that I hadn't faced before, yet that completely makes sense in the end. It is twisted, yet believable. It is creepy, yet tasteful. It's simply a delight to play.

This feeling of immersion only gets stronger every step of the way during this investigation. You'll encounter some rather interesting opponents and NPC's along the way and they will definitely be something you'll remember months or years from now. There's amazing roleplaying potential if the players want to, and the fights can be rather challenging as well. If you're not careful and refuse to listen to the not-so-subtle hints of your GM, you will even die.

Simply put: this scenario has it all and deserves to be recommend to everyone.

Pathfinder Society Scenario #5–09: The Traitor’s Lodge (PFRPG) PDF

This scenario was a lot of fun. We had a low-tier party except for a level 6 witch (Woran).

I was really looking forward to playing this after playing Siege of the Diamond City a year back, to wrap up some loose threads. Now I've got some more new loose threads to follow up; this is a good scenario for people who want to follow the metaplot. This one really ties in to several past and "future" (later in season 5) scenarios. [Spoiler omitted]

Our GM really hammed up the RP of the main NPC you deal with here, and that helped a lot to set the right tone. I think he got something good to work with, too.

It's basically an investigation, but in a hostile environment. So you'll want to have some smart PCs along. The scenario rewards people who take the investigation seriously / it punishes people who expect the GM to spoonfeed it to them. I like that. The investigation also tells a story.

The fights are tied intimately into the investigation part. Quite a variety of (gross) monsters, but none of them felt random or contrived. The fights were pretty fierce; fortunately we had a ridiculously optimized warrior (with levels in just about everything) and powerful witch with us. Her Misfortune stopped at least five natural 20s cold in their tracks.

Carla (our GM) likes giving his players a proper scare, and the final fight had us quite nervous. He was cackling that "my tactics are working perfectly!". With teamwork even in the face of a nasty situation we eventually made it through.

I think this adventure is a very good whole of setting, story, mission and fights. Everything fits together and reinforces each other. It's not an easy adventure but it's fair and satisfying.

I'm looking forward to GMing this one as well.

Pathfinder Society Scenario #5–09: The Traitor’s Lodge (PFRPG) PDF

I played this with Carla as the GM. We had a low-tier party except for a level 6 witch (Woran).

(2) A twist that changes the game. There's another season 4 scenario that did this especially well, and when it happens, it really ups the wow factor.

It requires GMs to run a game a little more than just by-the-book. They have to think smart about how they do it, ensuring a game is kept fun, kept cool. It's not hard as long as there's no me-vs-them mentality.

This is a superbly escalating dungeon investigation romp. Every box has been ticked by the careful work of the author. We have tense and intriguing roleplay, challenging combats, a highly cinematic and stressful second act, plenty of nods to previous scenarios and a build-up of frightening metaplot information about what’s coming up next. The central NPC is a wonderfully written character who should remain in player’s memories for a long time. Let's hope she returns!

Ultimately this would be a 5 star review, but some heavy-handedness with a non-combat encounter, lack of trap detection and some loopholey antics with monster alignment brings it down a peg. Still, a brilliant example of great dungeon design and a truly cinematic scenario. Grab your most unreliable flashlight, grab a GM who loves their horror movies and schedule in an evening game in the Traitor's Lodge.

The mechanics although are weak and can cause the players to miss out of a good amount of it.

The final boss is amazing but if played strategically could easily destroy a party without the right setup. For an average int boss I find this unfair, but I know DMs will kill many players not noticing this.

When running this game you should encourage players to to see the full flavor of what the author has written and add your own touch to expand it. This fixes the mechanic issues I found in the scenario.

The begining "Venture Captain" is the best one I ever encountered.

Pathfinder Society Scenario #5–09: The Traitor’s Lodge (PFRPG) PDF

This scenario has enough details to make the a very intense awesome adventure.

Valais is a very memorable NPC. PCs where suspicious of her the entire time.

This is a fantastic investigative scenario that was a blast to GM.

My only issue with the scenario was the maze tiles. The 10x10 dimensions make it hard to print from a home computer. However, they were incredibly easy to draw.

Pathfinder Society Scenario #5–09: The Traitor’s Lodge (PFRPG) PDF

The whole feel of this scenario is AWESOME!

It's a once-in-a-lifetime treat for any GM who wants to unleash both his inner Cryptkeeper and inner ham. My experience with it suggests that played just right, this scenario can genuinely immerse, move, and thoroughly unnerve a group of players (even in a busy public room with full lighting). If you can manage a couple of convincingly scary voices, you should practice slipping into/out of them seamlessly!

It was also helpful to start the action in Mendev: getting there in other Season 5 scenarios has been pretty tedious. We can probably assume that under the circumstances, the Lodge and the Crusaders have established a mostly-secure series of stationed, policed roads and water routes.

Now the drawbacks (spoilers): some of the encounters are confusingly written, and have unclear conditions. Mapping the reconstituted labyrinth proved nearly impossible; once its illusory nature became apparent, it wasn't clear whether the party could simply ignore it, walking around the real wall remnants as needed and rendering the maps pointless. The scenario alludes to "creatures" in Karsos' maze, but doesn't actually describe them. Worse, though, it doesn't mention at what point Karsos attacks, or how a fight actually plays out in combination with the labyrinth and his Phantasmagoria ability—the directions were so opaque that I had to simply let the illusion peter out, and stage the fight out in the open.

Also, the party is far less likely to get the "Acquainted with Aslynn" boon that the author seemed to think: using the chalk seemed like an obvious case of "poking the unknown scary thing with a stick," and even halfway wary players were powerfully disinclined to try it. Moral: if it leads to some sort of boon, it should probably be something that a party has vaguely realistic reasons for doing/attempting.

Pathfinder Society Scenario #5–09: The Traitor’s Lodge (PFRPG) PDF

This is the most purely FUN scenario that I've ever played or GMed, hands down.
