Most necromancers are foul, twisted individuals obsessed with corruption and death. But a few embrace the knowledge that true necromancy involves tapping the powers of life as well as death. These enlightened few are known as white necromancers.

New Paths 7: The Expanded White Necromancer gives you everything you need to play a necromancer whose understanding of the mysterious connection between life and death makes you a potent healer as well as a powerful spellcaster.

Designer Marc Radle has greatly expanded the white necromancer class from Kobold Quarterly #19 to include:

  • 6 new spells including dance of the dead and wall of bones
  • Necrotic Healer and Grave-Bound archetypes
  • 2 new necromantic feats
  • Rules for undead companions that bind you to a loyal ghost, mummy, vampire, skeleton, shadow or zombie

Hey, just because you summon ghosts and travel with a helpful vampire, it doesn’t make you a bad guy! Get The Expanded White Necromancer and wield the powers of death to bring justice and healing to the world.

IT'S OUT! :D

I can't seem to get it to complete personalizing though... D:

Should be getting a review up tonight =D

Liberty's Edge

Are folks still having trouble getting their downloads to personalize?

If so, I'm sure Liz will be on it as soon as she gets in (and, if she's anything like me, has her coffee! :)

Just checked again and sadly I still can not. Just have to be patient...

I've poked a thing and the download should work properly now. :)

YAY! Thanks for poking it! Hope it didn't bite. Off to read!

Now this one looks good! Not to say weird -- a (good) necromancer traveling around with a gang of undead as a PC? I'll have to get a copy just to see how strange it can get.

Thanks Eric! Really anxious to hear what people think about this one. The class is really fun and has tons of interesting role-playing potential.

If you'd like to hear a bit more about the genesis of the class, you can check out the recent design blog:)

It's weird in a way that reminds of a little of Clark Ashton Smith, and the "ethically-challenged" characters of Jack Vance, and that general sense of "undead-as-ancestors-and-resources" of the 2nd Edition AD&D setting Jakandor.

I think it will get some play. Ok, a LOT of play.

This one definitely won me over, though it brought to mind something weird for me: Sulik and Grampy Bone from Fallout:-)

Yes. "The company has arrived."

Been waiting for this.

I just don't buy into non-evil undead as being odd, strange or weird. My bones aren't evil now, why should a mystic motive force that animates them be evil? Golarion/Paizo have a hangup I don't share.

I am very happy to see this. Nice one Marc!

Shadow Lodge

If I take the grave bound archetype, would power over undead cause it to flee?

Shadow Lodge

I guess I have another question. What is the reason behind not having necromancy spells like defending bone and boneshatter on the spell list. Not questioning the design. Just wondering.

Are they not part of the spells you are allowed to mention (I think its open reference document or something)

Edit: sorry. Third question. It says they use 2 spell slots to cast evil spells but as a spontaneous caster they don't get spell slots. Does it use 2 uses of their spells per day?

No. The Undead Companion is specifically marked as "Cannot be turned or commanded".

That line in Power Over Undead refers to undead the WN creates with animate dead, create undead, or similar spells.

Those spells per day are slots, they're just spent spontaneously rather than filled at the beginning of the day. Spont casting has always used the same wording as prepared for things such as this. (For example, when calculating bonus spell slots due to high casting stat bonus.)

Regardless the answer is yes, [Evil] Necromancy spells would lose them two of their available spells for the day.

And done!

Awesome review, Orthos. :)

Also, finally got it downloaded (thanks Chris!), digging in, loving it. :)

I really want to play that grim reapery paladin/white necromancer now. And the grave-bound version is sorely tempting.

That and Necromancer's Sacrifice is one of those healing spells that just screams "heroic good". ....I think we have a strong contender for a favored class for Vildeis worshippers too...

Thank you for this class, Marc Radle!

the 2nd Edition AD&D setting Jakandor.

If I wasn't already sold on this class, that comparison certainly would have gotten my money as well. :D

Jakandor has come up on the boards a couple of times, with it often being lamented that sticking to 3.5 as written undermined what made that setting work.

Plug in this class, and suddenly it's back in working order. :)

Liberty's Edge

Thanks for the review Orthos! Really glad you like this :)

In fact, I'm thrilled to see how many folks are digging the white necromancer - it warms the cockles of my heart (whatever those are ;)

@Derekjr - I'm not familiar with the defending bone and boneshatter spells. They are not in any of Paizo's core books or Paizo's official PRD, though, so I'm assuming they are from some other source?

From the names, though, they sound like they might be fine additions to the white necromancer's spell list in your home game,

FWIW - Defending Bone is from Gods and Magic and Boneshatter is from Osirion, Land of Pharaohs

Thanks Sethvir!

Hey, I just saw that the Expanded White Necromancer debuted at #36 over on DriveThruRPG.com and #4 on RPGNow.com!

Not bad for having just been released yesterday!

NP. Been reading it in between other stuff and looks really interesting. I missed it the first time through KQ. Only really heard about it word of mouth, so was excited when this version came out.

Thanks.

In a weird tangent, a 13th Age fan liked the White Necromancer so much he has written up some notes on porting it to other rules systems.

13th Age White Necromancer Notes

Which is quite a compliment to the flavor and concept of this class, I would say.

Thank you for the review, EZG, and thank you to everyone who has picked it up!

Necromancers, dark fey, ghouls, and underlings were all best sellers this week--sounds like an encounter to me.

I didn't expect this one to work that well - kudos for handling white necromancy as well as you did - now when do we get a mega-adventure on dark fey, ghouls and white necromancers? Empire of the Ghouls V.2.0? ;)

Shadow Lodge

I did not catch the error/typo on the zombie on my initial read-through. Thanks for the heads-up End.

Also I'd definitely be interested in that campaign =D

Just in case I haven't said so - Orthos, I love reading your well-researched and informative reviews. And don't be discouraged by missing glitches - I've missed my fair share as well over the course of my "career" as a reviewer. :) To quote one cheesy, yet awesome sonic-song: The motto for a reviewer, at least for me, is "Live and learn."

Cheers!

SHUDDER!

Shadow Lodge

Thanks for the compliments =) I'm getting through my "folder of stuff to be reviewed" slowly but surely.

Liberty's Edge

A neutral good Darakhul Ghoul White Necromancer would bean awesome NPC! Someone needs to work that into an encounter post haste!

Oh, and regarding the zombie companion's attack dice, it's not actually an error. You see, due to the zombie's nature, in time its fists begin to atrophy which makes them less able to do lots of damage, so ... um .... you see, it causes ... er ...

Ok, yeah, that's a typo :/ I'll make sure that's fixed and get a revised PDf up asap!

Liberty's Edge

Thanks for the great review Megan!

And a new review by Eric Hinkle! Thank you for the review.

Liberty's Edge

Thanks so much for taking the time to post your review Eric - it's very much appreciated!

Really glad you liked this!

Huh, Marc - can't believe you're not seeing the new 5 star review I dropped. Sure I'm critical of some of the design, and there may be an error as well, but it's still a cool class and a fantastic PDF.

Question - did the White Necromancer make it into the New Class Compilation print edition? If not, perhaps there will be another one!!!

The Exchange Contributor; Publisher, Kobold Press; RPG Superstar Judge

Thanks for your review, OSW!

With regard to the New Paths Compilation, we're still working on it. But given how well-loved the White Necromancer is, I think we'd be fools not to include it.

No worries - Marc has done an awesome job with an iconic concept.

Are you considering an Advanced Races compliation as well? Any inside news in which races we might see soon?

Liberty's Edge

Agreed - Thanks for the 5-stars, OSW!

And, I just saw that The Expanded White Necromancer was #1 Non-Paizo Download this week on Paizo.com which is AWESOME!

Definitely worth the price of a comic book!

Liberty's Edge

Awesome! I can't think of a better compliment :)

Now ... is the class worth a review? That's the question ;)
