Fitting adversaries for those who fancy themselves as such legendary heroes, perhaps...

The Introduction is mainly explanation of how each monster entry is presented, complete with handy icons used to enable you to tell at a glance the creature type and the terrain and climate that it favours. These are supplemented by appendices that list them by CR, terrain and so on thus enabling you to populate a chosen area with ease. Other appendices deal with special abilities and other details, including a fascinating section on monster creation, another on monster advancement and one on monsters as player-characters.

The main bulk of the book is composed of an alphabetical listing of the monsters. Each comes with a colour illustration and stat block, with plenty of detail and description to enable you to work out suitable uses for it and how it will behave when encountered by the party.

Beginning with the abaia, an eel with a strong regard for the environment which acts as guardian to a body of water... and turns quite nasty if you do not respect the lake it inhabits (it doesn't mind people who take only what they need, it is those who abuse nature that upsets them), there follows a fascinating array of creatures.

The almiraj, for example, looks like a cross between a rabbit and a unicorn, but it's no fluffy bunny! If nothing else, anything slain by its horn is turned to stone so if the poor almiraj wants to eat whatever it has attacked (it's apparently a carnivore), it has to eat its prey alive.

One of the weirdest is the colour out of space. This is an eerie radient incorporeal ooze that leaches life out of its surroundings until it reaches maturity, at which time it departs into the interstellar depths from which it came. If that's not enough for you, the Great Old Ones are here, so if you wish to combat Cthulhu or Hastur or the like, now you can... if you dare. Most have cults associated with them, details of which are also given.

If it's monsters out of legend that you want, there are beings such as Grendel, if you prefer more mundane ones there are gremlins or even giraffes! Undead too, and an alchemist's error called a hungry flesh, a giant ooze. To cap it all, how about an immortal ichor, which is an intelligent mass of blood from a dead evil deity...

This is indeed a collection of monsters rich and strange, ones whose very being deserve a song or story, never mind those that will be written when heroes defeat them in battle!

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Bestiary 4 (OGL)

Herein is a fine and fascinating array of monsters, most with supernatural aspects and worthy of songs and legends... indeed it is suggested that to make the most of them you should be also using the Mythic Adventures rules.
To start, the Bestiary 4 has added everything from new types of fey to additional golems as well as the more prominent and popular Kaiju, Great Old Ones, and Empyreal Lords. Paizo's inclusion of these creatures that've gone on to become pop culture legends in their own right is a direct result of the designer's dedication to getting their monsters right. The Bestiary 4 is an awesome sourcebook and stands right up there with the Bestiary 3 in terms of 'fantasy verisimilitude,' hardening gamers resolve against such villainous foes as Cthulhu himself.

Not every book is a perfect image of idolatry however and the Bestiary 4 is no exception. While it's true that this book is littered with new baddies for your players to chase and new races for their characters to face, it is also bogged down with what seems to be an over-saturation of multiple page monsters. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it does seem as if several of these creatures could've used a proverbial trimming before being posted.

If you don't mind a bit of length though and you want more vile beasts for your players to square off against then the Bestiary 4 is yet another wonderful book to add to your collection and one that comes Five-Star recommended by your Severed Ronin.

I'd personally put it up with Bestiary 3, with both having a good mix of classic, mythological, and completely new monsters.

There's a bit of a horror them and a bit of a mythic theme, but neither is overwhelming. If you're looking for a whole book of mythic monsters, this isn't it. If you're worried the whole book is mythic monsters, there aren't that many in practice.

For me, the evocative flavor on the high CR creatures pushes it over the top. The demon lords, empyreals, and great old ones really feel like epic creatures.

If you're sure you don't need any more monsters... don't buy this book. That said, I wasn't sure if I needed any more monsters and was definitely impressed by this.

Short Version: These are sweet monsters, but only you know whether you want more monsters.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Bestiary 4 (OGL)

This is a good Bestiary. If you are unsure of this claim, just glance back at some of my posts from earlier this year where I discuss collecting comics and whatnot. So I’m sure that it will come as no surprise to anyone when I confess that I love roleplaying games. From Dungeons & Dragons to R.I.F.T.S. to DragonLance, I love just about all things fantasy related. A couple of years ago, I stumbled upon the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, and now I have a new obsession. Pathfinder is an amazing gaming system that both old and new role-players will love.

If you are a visual person for the most part, like me, then you’ll love this new bestiary. The book is crammed full of creatures and monsters alike, complete with stats, origin histories and color pictures. The detailed graphics of each entry are an excellent companion to help describe who or what is attacking your party.

My favorite aspect of this bestiary is the inclusion of the Great Old Ones, which are none other than deities that exist in the worlds of H.P. Lovecraft. As a HUGE Lovecraft fan, this was an amazing surprise, and I am whole-heartedly inserting some of these beasties into my own campaigns. Of particular note is the great Cthulhu himself! It just doesn’t get much better.

The PATHFINDER ROLEPLAYING GAME: BESTIARY 4 is a huge win for me and it’s a definite must-own if you enjoy RPGs. But whether you play or not, you should certainly pick this one up anyway, if just to see the detailed artwork. The book is available now.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Bestiary 4 (OGL)

I think I’ve made it very clear that I am a huge geek and have been for many, many years.
The good
-A lot of new fey.
-Cool new true dragons and some cool new non-true dragons.
-10 playable races.
-Lovecraftian horrors and even Old Ones.
-More mythical creatures from different cultures.
-Kaiju!!!
-Movie inspired creatures like the Bodyfilcher.
-Interesting new giants.
-A great selection of plant creatures.
-A lot of interesting new golems, clockworks, and other constructs.
-Some actually interesting undead.

The bad
-No new 0HD races, all of them reprints.
-Demon Lords.
-Mythic rules.
-Disapointing Empyreal lords mental stats.
-Not as many creatures, too many 2 page creatures.
-Still too few elementals.

But all in all a solid investment and who knows how long it will be until the next one.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Bestiary 4 (OGL)

Long time waiting but here it is, a new hardcover bestiary, and it is worth the wait.

(4 stars)Garrett the Gnollhttps://paizo.com/products/btpy91ds?Pathfinder-Roleplaying-Game-Bestiary-42013-11-09T10:23:49Z
Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Bestiary 4 (OGL)

When I first saw this, all I could think was “They brought in Cthulhu? Well, they obviously ran out of ideas”. I am pleased to say, I was more wrong than right.

Most of the book is dedicated to towering enemies and H.P.Lovecraft stories. With this you can reenact your favorite horror story or run a real God vs. God battle. Paizo even stated a Pathfinder god. Good thing it’s only Pazuzu – the least lovable of the top three demon lords. You also get 2 lesser lords, Dagon and Kostchtchie, so you can send your party all the way through hell.

There are two must-have monsters that should have been included in earlier bestiaries: kitsune and nosferatu.

As per tradition, many monsters from adventure paths are put into the bestiary. And, as per tradition, there are new dragons. My favorites are the clockwork dragon, nycar and the drakes.

There are quite a lot of new interesting dwellers to the world of Pathfinder. The formian ant centaurs are a promising swarming neutral enemy. The leaf ray should turn any forests into magical wonderland. The living topiary is a great urban ambush monster. The Asian themed monsters are always a great welcome. The kaiju are homage to the giant monster films, so if your party wants to fight Godzilla, give them Mogaru. Some space and time dwelling creatures. More giant bugs. Three new lycanthropes: bat, crocodile and shark. Colossuses are a beautiful surprise weapons of mass destruction – when will your party suspect that the entire castle can be animated into a knight? They even threw in the Wickerman for Nicolas Cage fans.

The first 3 bestiaries had enemies up to level 24, so those running mythic adventures really need this book with its opponents going up to 30. But if in the reviews and lists you don’t find anything worth adding to your games, you may want to skip this one, or just get the PDF.

Let’s hope Paizo takes its time releasing Bestiary 5, as this book is hard to digest.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Bestiary 4 (OGL)

When I first saw this, all I could think was “They brought in Cthulhu? Having been a D.M. for 24 years now I'm always on the lookout for new monsters. The monsters presented have a good range of uniqueness and difficulty level. There seemed to be some influence on Asian and "outer realms" monsters as well as a lot of undead. Overall however the book is a must-have. Two things though, Bestiaries don't come out fast enough and I wish Paizo would have a section where they explained what ethnic backgrounds they took monsters from. This could aid D.M.s on monster placement. And Huzzah on the Giant Locusts, I have not seen them since the red books.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Bestiary 4 (OGL)

Bestiary 4 is great. It’s full of monsters for any type of player and adventure! From huge city-crushing Colossi and Kaiju, to small cuddly and playful Pipefoxes, Pooka and Tooth Fairies that every player want to cuddle with until they find out some of their teeth are missing! ;-)
Undead rise from every corner, bizarre oozes slither around on countless pages, constructs of all types and sizes crush their way into your adventures and beasts from your worst nightmares will haunt you even further!

This Bestiary revamps monsters from D&D such as the awesome Formians, the improved mudmen named Mudlords, the colorful Sea Cat and the original Lurking Rays which will surprise you with their originality!
It stats up monsters from the most horrifying and awesome movies of all time, such as the plants from the Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the all-consuming Blob, Grendel from Beowulf that will tear your limb for limb, the horrors from the Mimic movies, heck… even Godzilla isn’t safe for this Tome of awesomeness, and if you have a high imagination, it also stats the murderous rabbit from The Holy Grail! (Almiraj comes close enough!)
It also holds tons of monsters from all types of Mythologies and Folklore stories from all over the planet such as the bizarre Asian/Japanese monsters known as Gaki, Bakekujira, Gashadokuro, Kitsune, Harionago, Hyakume, Jinmenju and Rokurokubi, the Greek and famous Graeae, Argus, Lampad, Karkinoi and Maenad, from the cold Norse come the Einherjars and Svartalfars, the European came up with the Fachen, Erlking, Huldra, Fossegrim, Buggane, Alpluachra, Selkie and of course the horrifying Spring-Heeled Jack!
And many, many more such as Abaia, Kapre, Julunggali, Rukh, Qallupilluk and Tikbalang! And then there are the Jack-o-Lantern and the horrid Rat Kings!
It’s a must-have book for fans of Mythology, fantasy stories and Folklore! (such as myself!)

The book also adds in to the ever-growing numbers of Drakes, Dark Ones, Clockworks, Devils, Dinosaurs, Giants (Ocean Giants are awesome!), Golems (Blood and Coral!!), Gremlins, Kytons, Lycanthropes (some that terrorize the seas, lakes and skies) and the new and awesome Psychopomps! (Well not really new, but they are new to the Bestiary books!)

There are many awesome new templates in this book, and while I myself aren’t the biggest template fan in the world I must admit these templates will rock your table! As with this Bestiary you can turn ANY creature into a monster of shadows or covered in deadly fungi, mummy horrors of any kind and form can be brought to life, and then there is the Nightmare Creature Template which will turn some already scary monsters into monsters that your players will not soon forget!

Fans of dragons will be very happy with the extremely awesome and very colorful Outer Dragons which come straight from the cold void of space to terrorize your adventures even beyond the safe borders of Earth and/or Golarion!

New to this book are mythic creatures for truly epic mythic adventures and the Demon Lords, Kaiju and Great Old Ones! These extremely popular and epic awesomeness creatures are a must-have for every DM and fan of monsters!

Fans of the monsters of Lovecraft commit a serious crime when they ignore this book…
The Bestiary 4 gives immense attention and detail to MANY of the horrors Lovecraft dreamed up, think about horrors like the Cthulhu, Flying Polyp, the faceless Nightgaunts and the terrible Colour out of Space! And these are only few of them, there are many, many more hiding in the shadows of this book!

But not every monster in this monstrous tome wants to eat your bones, crush your brains, drain your blood, pull you through mirrors, absorb you into their endless mass, infest you with terrible diseases and poisons, rip your skin off, or even want to steal your teeth or talents…
Some of the creatures can be turned into precious allies or teammates! Think about creatures such as the beautiful Swan Maiden and the awesome and kind Empyreal Lords, making some adventures a little bit easier for your players, and bringing some love to the table.

Of course there are also some monsters I don’t really like or which I even dislike, but with more than 250 monsters in it that isn’t so strange as everybody has its personal preferences, like I don’t really care for real-world animals and playable races, but many other people(including you maybe) may be really hooked on those!
It’s a thing of taste, but everybody will get what they want from this book as it’s so incredible varied!

And even if you don’t play the Pathfinder game at all this book will fit very well into any art-addicted, monster-book collecting persons collection! The book is full of AWESOME and STUNNING artworks that really fit well together and give a very good picture of what the monster should be or what it can do!

So what are you waiting for? BUY IT NOW! (The more people who buy it, the more chance there will be an even better Bestiary 5 in the near future! And I really hope we will see a lot more Bestiaries from Paizo! Bestiary 10 here we come!!!) ;-)

Keep up the good work!

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Bestiary 4 (OGL)

You really got to love Paizo!
I mean, what other game-company listens to, communicates and jokes around with fans like they do?!?
You have a wish for a monster you like to see in one of their products? Just let them know in the Bestiary-wish topics and when you are lucky that same monster/idea will end up in one of their awesome products!

I’m a bestiary junkie, so it’s probably unfair to see a review coming from my fingers… but I want to try it anyway.. so here goes!

This book has everything I hoped it would have and more. Lots of interesting things to challenge players at all levels, and even some super powerful things to throw at epic or mythic characters. Almost every page had me thinking of ways to use these things in a game, and that's what I'm looking for in a book like this.

Lots of standard monsters, lots of interesting templates to modify monsters. It'll definitely get used at my table. For me, this was worth my money.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Bestiary 4 (OGL)

Picked my up from the local game store. This book has everything I hoped it would have and more.
