Outstanding Fan additons to Rise of the Runelords

5/5

This issue is crammed full of outstanding additions to the game themed around the Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path.

As always there are new magic items, spells, classes, encounters, adventures, stories, monsters and other interesting things.

The great thing is that most of the articles are not tied to the AP. Almost everything is very usable outside of a campaign focusing on the Runelords.

To me a few things stand out. The Swallowtail games, the goblin magic items, and the Chopper's Isle adventure. That's not to say everything isn't good. This issue will help your players fall in love with Sandpoint more than ever.

Amazing!

5/5

If you are a GM, and you would like to play the 1st adventure of Rise of the Runelord... this is a must!

I never refuse free stuff, and this 90-pages fanzine was crucial with its details and hints at the beginning of the campaign. Thanks to this fanzine (Swallowtail Festival Games and The Lure of Greed were much appreciated by the party), my PCs loves Sandpoint and its inhabitants ... thus having good reasons to protect them from those who want to threaten the town!

Yeah, just noticed Cheapy's review. Huh. I would totally agree that the Bonewitch is edging toward swapping out too many hexes for the Boneform ability...

Problem is, at 1st level, while not having a hex hurts a witch, giving her a hex AND a skeletal familiar is probably OP. So she can probably suffer that.

Now, not getting a hex until 6th level is plain crazy!!! Here's my tweak:

Shift Unlife Essence to 4th level, and make Boneform replace hexes at 1st, 8th, 12th, 16th and 20th. The initial progression of Boneform's abilities matched the hexes lost, though now the 4th level abilities are "free". I think, in line with Cheapy's comments, that overall the swap of Boneform for 5 hex choices instead of 6 is probably okay...

If we also move the Skeletal Familiar's Chill Aura ability to 4th level things start to make much more sense both mechanically and thematically - at 4th level the Bonewitch has gained her bonus to cold-based effects (otherwise she'd be freezing next to her familiar) and the negative energy affinity and detecting as undead of Unlife Essence now match the greater "undeadness". The same level that she also gets command undead from the new Unlife Patron should she choose it...

Plus she can now use a hex from 2nd level...and doesn't get to choose another until 6th level.
One could argue that the option of taking the Extra Hex feat at 1st level could have
counteracted all of this, but by the wording of the feat it says You gain one additional hex" - meaning, to me at least, one hex in addition to any hex already
chosen. Which being none, invalidates the character from choosing the feat. And, I think, the changes I propose here make the archetype both flavorfully and mechanically robust. ;)

Oceanshieldwolf, yep, getting a hex at level 2 opens up that feat, which helps a lot with preserving the flavor of the witch. From what I recall of the archetype, that would help quite a bit.

Apparently I'm a stealthy reviewer.

I am eagerly anticipating the latest edition of Wayfinder! I think last year's edition came out in February.

Nice. And well done! I guess folks really do use these side-trek adventures in Wayfinder. I've written a few of them now, but I'm never quite sure if folks wind up incorporating them into their home games as one-shots or enhancements to long-running campaigns. It's good to know this one resonated. :)

For the past 4 episodes of Legacy of the Ancients (ep. 11-14), Skid Maher and the guys at Glass Cannon Network have been romping through a side trek adventure published in Wayfinder #7....Chopper's Isle, by James Cline and Thomas Baumbach, and maps by Crystal Frasier. It has been a genuine treat to hear the side trek brought to life, and masterfully integrated into the RotRL adventure.

I highly recommend that folks put in $5 to their Patreon to give the Legacy of the Ancients (and all their other series too!) a listen, if you aren't already subscribers.
