Larissa's nerves get the better of her as they approach the prison. Clutching her quarterstaff tightly with both hands, she stands close behind Rholf. "Um, Father, what does it sound like?" she whispers.
As her nervousness increases, it also manifests in her 'haunts' as her long hair twists and flits of its own volition, almost braiding itself at one point, flying loose and flipping around into her face another. She doesn't appear to even notice.
Prolly....mice.....
Dr. Nigel Erebus |
We can NPC him by committee like we do in Aubrey's game...
Nigel looks around, distaste clear on his face. "You would think they would have re-built in honor of those guards that gave their lives here instead of letting is collapse in upon their corpses." He gives a dramatic shudder. Apologies to his player, it's what came to mind.
Its all good. I am trying to get caught up on 166 (!!) new posts since I had a chance to participate. Lotta bad stufff going down, will try and keep up
Lady Alinya Gurov |
Nice to see you back Pat; hope life sorts itself out for you. We're happy to NPC Nigel as much as you need, but probably you're the only one who can level him up to the glorious heights of Summoner 2 :)
"Big mice, to hear them from out here," Alinya whispers, infected by the same nervousness as Larissa.
Castiel of Fangwood |
“I feel ... a presence,” mutters Castiel, looking about steely eyed and unshaken. “Show yourself, revenant!” he calls.
Know, religion check to determine if the feeling is the result of some sort of undead or haunting: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Castiel of Fangwood |
It's.....a memory haunting. Many men died in the same horrific way. Its shadow reaching down to you from many years ago.....having lingered here for so so long.
Who enters next?....
Does Castiel know of any way to dispel, destroy or guard against it? Or haunts in general?
Castiel of Fangwood |
Nothing untoward happens to Rholf......
And, of potential interest, there's the side house, two guard towers, and the prison itsself......
What's closest to us?
Castiel suggests investigating some of the out-buildings first, so as not to leave potential dangers behind them when they investigate the prison proper.
dungeonmaster heathy |
Larissa follows close on Rholf's heels, looking in all directions at once. Haunts don't scare her, though. Maybe her personal haunts will find a friend and stay here.
They're doing that thing, where they wriggle in between your skull and brain, and you can't itch it.
Edwin Drood |
"I am sure there are many, relatively, harmless creatures that could be making that sound." Edwin says comfortingly to the ladies. He shrugs and adds;
"Considering the recent happenings, it's not LIKELY, but possible." HE grins.
After you! He says cheerfully to Castiel.
After Castiels warning;
"Hm. Fascinating. I have heard of this phenomena before, although I've never encountered it personally. This excursion promises to be quite educational!" He says cheerfully, then after Rholf suffers no obviously ill effects, takes a short breath and steps through,...

Welcome back Pat! Hope life gets less-crazy for you soon! (I'm suffering through a multitude of of minor disasters myself. So at least your in good company!) ;P
Will try to lvl up before our first actual encounter. (I guess I'd better hurry, huh?!? ;P)
dungeonmaster heathy |
Castiel; Edwin; 15 and 17 for perception;
Nothing....about the house.
Although, you notice, around the prison proper, from where you stand by the gate, a certain and apparent patterning about the bottom of the place where the foundation meets the ground ; it looks out of sorts with the rest of the building. It doesn't.....jive with the general dilapidation of the prison......
Rholf Kastigarr |
"Agreed." Rholf replies to Castiel's statement. "Dealing with the outbuildings first would be wise. Do you... See that pattern along the bottom of the walls there? It's very strange."
Rholf ponders the pattern for just a moment, remembering a tale he'd heard once upon a time about a woman who went insane and became lost in a pattern on a wall. Abruptly, he turns toward Castiel, draws his scimitar, and says "Ready when you are."
Castiel of Fangwood |

“I do,” answers Castiel. “It appears more recent than the building’s abandonment, whatever it is.” But for now the paladin’s attention remains on the house.
Who is out trapspringer and/or person with highest perception score? Might be worth having a thorough look about before we go in.
Edwin Drood |
Edwin looks almost disappointed when he feels nothing upon passing through the gates. But he gestures towards the prison wall with his crossbow.
"I did indeed notice the pattern. Most fascinating, and worthy of further investigation. But first, the house!" He gives a lopsided smile.
As soon as I lvl up, your trapspringer/per: person will probably be me! (lvl 2 gives me the ability to spot/disarm magical traps as well as mundane, just like a rogue.) :)
"Now, let's just take a closer look here, shall we?" Edwin asks the others before stepping forward and taking a look, at the ground. Once he has examined the ground between the group and the house, he turns his attentions to the building itself,...
Doing the usual Sherlock thing and checking ALL around for clues. (I would love to spot footprints of undead BEFORE they find us!) ;P

Myron sees the writing as well, around the base of the prison.
Again, too far away to read......
the only trap is the state of the house in question......its a deathtrap, metaphorically speaking. It should be demolished. A sparrow could fart in there and possibly cause the walls to collapse. It's in an awful state of disrepair.
Edwin Drood |
OK, so the house is dangerous to enter, do we check it out anyway? (My old group would have said something like, "Leave no treasure unclaimed!") ;P
Edwin looks at the structural supports, or lack of them, as pointed out by Myron. He nods in agreement.
"Very unstable. Very dangerous. You should go first."
He looks around at the group.
"What? I only meant that he's obviously the best qualified to tell if a section is structurally unsound and in danger of imminent collapse."
Myron Swackhammer |
Perception 12+7=19, Knowledge (engineering) 12+7=29 to try to spot and stay away from particularly weak areas.
"OK. I'll do the second floor first, just to get it out of the way. I'll yell out which room I'm in whenever I enter a new one, in case you need to dig me out."
Myron carefully walks inside. "ENTRYWAY! I'm looking for a staircase!"

At your loud yell, you hear a battalion's worth of scuttling under the floorboards, and the barnstink and dust of a tribe, nay a nation of rats' habitation is spewed dustily into the air about you, filling the rooms with an ill and hazy humor.
The dust never truly settles, but through the murky gloom you see a hall leading in, a door on the left, a stairway leading up the wall on the right, and a door under that, a door behind that, a door at the end of the hall. All is ruined, the end table on the left is shattered. There were pictures but they've been ripped out of their frames. A continent of mold bravely climbs the wall, headed for the roof, having slowly greened it for a decade.
The stairway up does not look sturdy at all. It looks like an invitation to disaster. And your armor, though proof against most stabbing catching bashing things, seems to be nothing more than a weighty detriment to climbing that stair.
Rholf Kastigarr |
"Is it possible we could just burn the thing without the fire spreading? The brick walls would contain the flames for the most part. That way, we could be certain nothing will come at us from here, and it would ensure that none who come here after we do injure themselves because they lacked Myron's knowledge. Just thinking." Rholf shrugs a little.
dungeonmaster heathy |
Coitinly!
I think it's a physical law of some sort that any building aboveground can be burned by the player characters. The alchemist's mansion from U1 comes to mind........(Tobus Neth wanted to burn it.....)
Why there's so many dungeons. ;)
It's cool though; burn away if it suits ye.

That post is awesome. I'm just waiting for the "fire on the brain" comments. :)
