The gender inconsistencies are deliberate and reflect a character whose gender identity is mutable...
This becomes important or at least salient in later adventures.


Hej Jeff - yes, I got that one. It's confusing nevertheless. Why not opt for s/he instead?

Because it was supposed to confuse the players, though not necessarily the GM, and reflect the ways in which the character's appearance and gender were highly mutable toward one or the other rather than indeterminate.


Yeah, my point is, why not use s/he for the GM-text, the ambiguous genders for the read-aloud text? That would help, I think. ^^

Perhaps I over thought the matter. My sister is transgender. Indeterminate gender reminded me too much of cisgendered individuals calling transpeople "it."
