5/5

I love this miniature. Pathfinder's blue dragons have a unique look that differentiates them from Dungeons and Dragons' blue dragons and that is good. I also like the jewelry worn by the dragon and I wish more dragons were represented that way. The details on this dragon are great and it looks amazing on the table

Best of the Dragon Series! Easy to Assemble!

5/5

This is easily one of the most impressive dragon miniatures that a GM can place on the table. It comes in the box in a couple pieces that easily slide together, so I'm not sure why anyone would have difficulty with it. The detail and paint are fantastic and it will truly take away the breath of your players.

It should be considered a "must-buy" for anyone running the Shattered Star adventure path or anyone that loves great dragon minis. Get it today, before it's gone and you find yourself in the forums begging for a reprint.

Awesome Mini, Awful Assembly

3/5

This sculpt and painting on this dragon are clearly 5-Star amazing. Great pose, great colors, great details. I love the runes on her belly! If this was the end of the review, it would be a 5-star review.

Nowhere on the packaging or product page (that I've been able to find) does it say 'some assembly required'. It should. Considering the difficulty I've had with other mini assembly projects, I would have reconsidered buying it. There are also no assembly instructions included. (Yes, which piece goes where is obvious, but is glue recommended? Required? What kind? Does it need to be pinned? Trimmed? No warning coupled with no instructions cost it a star.

But then it's so #$%$#&# DIFFICULT to assemble! I've paused after approximately 45 minutes of trying to assemble it without breaking it. Definitely costs another star.

Like I said, beautiful mini. Horrible execution. I Will not be buying any more large minis if I can't see for myself that they come pre-assembled.

GARGANTUAN (4x4) CREATURE for $39.99!

5/5

GOOD:
The sculpt and painting are flawless, the pose is great.
For me personally, the fact that the wings and half of the tail can be inserted easily and just as easily be pulled out again without causing damage, is also great, because you can use the mini as standin for other creatures (like a sea serpent) that way.
You can also put it on all four legs if you want.
Mine had no breakage whatsever.

BAD:
While the added "magical items/jewelry" are something new, they limit the usability a bit. I would have rather made them removable or let them away.

UGLY: nothing.

You won´t find a cool dragon mini this size for less money.

Amazing amount of detail and great paint job.

5/5

Although the mini comes in pieces and you need to add the tail and wings, with 20 minutes of patience, some crazy glue and some delicate force, you can add these limbs and have no seams showing. The result is really cool! Very glad I got this mini.

EDIT: spelling "seems" to "seams"

That is a great looking mini, if you can call something that big a mini...

I just wish you could buy it without buying the full case...

Not sure how I feel about this one. Have to wait and see.

Poor Seoni.

Am I the only one who thinks that his pose doesn't look natural?

well at least i know a big bad for this AP, and I have a previous Garg Blue from elsewhere. Not keen on shelling out 400 dollars just to qualify to buy this. As too the mini, It is an odd pose...almost like a One that got Away pose. It is a pleasing shade of blue though and i like the form of its head

You MIGHT be able to buy this later on down the road without buying a case. If we have any left over. You might have noticed that we are selling the Large black dragon that was the case incentive for the Heroes & Monsters set. If there are any Rune Giants left once Shattered Star starts shipping, we will start selling those individually as well. No guarantees. But it IS possible. Then once the set after Shattered Star starts to ship, the Blue Dragon will be sold individually if there are any left over. Probably sometime around GenCon next year. But, again, no guarantees.

Awesome sculpt!

More than anything, I just wish that it would be possible to advertise these things with a massive spoiler tag!

@Lisa Stevens: I'm pretty sure that the black dragon on my shelf is Huge. Perhaps your sense of scale has been distorted by the awesome rune giant (that I can't get yet). ;)

The Exchange

have to agree with novalord. there are so few gargantuan figures produced it seems a big waste to duplicate one that is out there already. I'd much rather see other holes in the overall miniature line filled. D&D minis produced a gargantual white, blue, and black dragons, and a demon. the Giant was a great pick for the second pathfinder set, as there were no gargantuan giants.
I'll probably still buy it, but there were better options out there. I'm still waiting for a huge water elemental.

That is hat happens when you post in the early morning while hopped up on pain meds. :). Yep, it is huge.

Alas, am I to be forever denied a gargantuan green dragon? :)

No, I know a few folks who, for the right price, will repaint it any color you want. ;-)

In the blog post Erik Mona said that a Gargantuan Green Dragon is a priority of his.

Also, I love the art on the front of the packaging.

Ah good (the blog post). The blue dragon's less exciting than most for me because I have two already (won a free one that's still in its box).

When I lift my screen to reveal it I plan on standing behind tapping my fingers together like an evil mastermind while giving his monolouge. The pose sorta works for that.

That's a little disappointing. I was hoping it might be becoming feasible to release three sets a year.

I don't think I can afford three sets a year :( $1,200 gets close to a family vacation.

While the miniature addict in me understands, the father and husband in me says thank god it is only twice a year. Three times might just force me to pick what set I am not buying into.

Yeah, I may be a part of a small cohort. Nonetheless... :(

Dark Archive

As for a Gargantuan Green, I purchased Deathsleet in the Bones Kickstarter with the intention to paint her green.

An interesting note, for those in the U.S.A. at least - the other week I swung by a local Hobbytown and picked up the Rune Giant promo-mini for $39.99 without being required to buy any other minis.

...would have bought one at my FLGS, but they weren't opening the option to buy one without buying $100 worth of boosters - and I do not do random minis.

Sad to say our local was willing to sell me the figure... at $70. So no Giant for me.

If and when Paizo begins to sell it direct I am sure the price will come down.

You were lucky to get it at that price.

After the cases were distributed I bought some Rune Giants from Paizo for $33 something. I already had three from my subscription and thought another couple would make my world complete.

After the cases are distributed and the dust settles (takes a few weeks) am a sure these will be available on Paizo too. Other after market internet folks will also have them. There are still Huge Black Dragons out there but my two are enough (and what I already had from past collections).

You bought some rune giants? Are they available here for separate sale already?

I bought them weeks ago.

They are not yet availible from paizo, I think Shem mistypedd the store he bought them from

hmmm So now they have a black and a blue dragon. I wonder if they'll ever have all five chromatics? If so I'll have to consider getting these.

Scarab Sages

I did not mistype.

I bought two additional Rune Giants from Paizo.

Rune Giant

Now there are conditions about buying cases, etc. And my subscription met the conditions.

I bought the two addtional Rune Giants on 8/28/12 (I checked my orders). With my discount they were a bit over $33.00. On ebay the cheapest were $39.99 and up to at least $50.

Mine arrived today.
Its a beautiful mini.
Big Blue is not as big as the previous big blue, but what it lacks in mass it makes up with personality and detail.

The plastic facing horn had popped off in shipping, but a touch of glue can fix that right up. But I'm thinking of keeping it off and using it as the coveted item the dragon possesses in the AP. A touch of tacky will keep it clutched in the dragon's claw.

Got mine too. It is awesome.
I love how the runes are carved into the flesh, not painted on.

I just wish WizKids would have put it in a slightly bigger box so I would not have to take a wing off every time I want to store it.

Received my Dragon today as well. She is much better looking in person.

Sczarni

Opened one for the store I work for - unfortunately she had a horn broken off - calling alliance in the morning hoping for a a replacement

Received my minis today, including both of my blue dragons.

One of the dragons all the pieces fit perfectly, both wings and the tail. But for the other one, everything fits great except the left wing, which is a bit loose. It will slide in and stay, but the wing is a little wobbly if you bump it or pick up the dragon. I think I'm just going to go ahead and super glue it.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It's disappointing to hear it comes requiring assembly. No doubt it's necessary for the bigger/more complicated sculpts. Nonetheless, I greatly prefer minis which are in one piece.

Sczarni

Steve, the wings and tail need assembly, but they are sculpted very well, you you can't even see the seams, and most should not require glue

I appreciate that. I recognise its a bit of an unreasonable gripe, nonetheless it is a disappointment. Glad to know its not a massive undertaking, anyway. Cheers.

I really do like the sculpt, but it feels like this is too small for a gargantuan.

I know plastic is more expensive these days, but I find a huge dragon that would be incapable of swallowing a medium figure whole a bit disconcerting.

It is a nice sculpt though, just wish the D&D icons didn't dwarf this model. The Rune Giant and Black Dragon seemed a bit on the small side too, but not nearly as much as this one.

It appears that Paizo/WizKids are trying to establish a standard on the box for the premium figures, as it's been the same size box for now the Rune Giant and Blue Dragon. And I can understand, as it is cheaper. They can make a large amount of them and all that is different is the art, depending on the premium figure.

But I agree with Steve in that I would prefer to see a solid mini, and I would be willing to pay a little extra to have a box appropriate to the size of the miniature (without having to break it up).

One last thing, I’m going to have to agree with Lorian as well, I found the Blue Dragon a bit small for gargantuan. I’m just thinking of the white dragon from D&D Icon line, which was also gargantuan, but was quite a bit bigger.

I would like to see the premium miniatures on the average to bigger size of each size category (Huge, Gargantuan, etc), then the smaller side. And I hope that the currently established premium boxes don’t play a part on how big the miniature is going to be.

Hobbun wrote:

Whole heartedly agreed.

If it makes a difference, I fully understand that more material costs more. If it's a price point issue I'm fully ok with paying more for the case premium since it costs more to make if bigger.

Also, if anyone wants to make a Tarrasque, I'd pay a lot for that. Just don't skimp on the size. I'd pay a couple hundred for a properly sized tarrasque, and I'm ok with it taking up one of my minis shelves by itself :P

Dark Archive

On the other hand, premium minis that are too big (like the 'colossal red dragon') are rather annoying and hard to use in the actual game.
The same goes for miniatures that are bigger than their base, preventing other miniatures from being adjacent to them.

Been reading a few horror stories about damaged dragons lately (see the review for one such). Has me concerned since mine is still in transit to Aus, and the post along that route is not kind or gentle to packages. If damaged on arrival can I send it back to you guys? How many others have recieved damaged dragons?

Replacements go through the manufacturer, but they're pretty good about it.

Keep in mind too, all the reports I've heard were horns that popped off.

In many cases, a dab of superglue will fix that, so that might be worth thinking about.

In my case the horn snapped off... would have rather the horns had been separate pieces so they were less likely to break

My concern is the long travel distance and time to Oz. See even a replacement is likely to get battered and bruised in transit, so I'm just trying to get an idea of the degree of problem that exists.

I couldn't tell you, mine was packed with a case of boosters, and buried in a ton of styrofoam peanuts. I'm not sure how people's are getting banged up that bad unless the mini finds a way to move around.

Maybe the boxes are getting squished though?

My Dragon came in it's normal package with no extra protection and had no breaks. Everything was where it should be. :-)

Now I have to wait to see on the case that is still in transit.
