Chapter 1: "Shards of Sin"
by Greg A. Vaughan
The Shattered Star Adventure Path begins with a thrilling new adventure from fan-favorite author Greg A. Vaughan! In Varisia’s bustling frontier city of Magnimar, the Pathfinder Society’s newest lodge recruits a team of rookie Pathfinders to track down rogue agent Natalya Vancaskerkin—who also happens to be one of the Varisian criminals known as the Sczarni. Yet when these heroes track down the missing woman, they find far more than a Pathfinder on the run, becoming embroiled in a swiftly expanding hunt for a fragmented artifact from the ancient empire of Thassilon—a quest that will take them to some of the most dangerous corners of Varisia.
This volume of Pathfinder Adventure Path launches the Shattered Star Adventure Path and includes:
“Shards of Sin,” a Pathfinder RPG adventure for 1st-level characters,
by Greg A. Vaughan.
An exploration of the ancient Sihedron artifact and its ties to powerful Thassilonian magic, as well as details on the mysterious skymetals that fall to Golarion, by James Jacobs.
Forays into the even seedier underbelly of Riddleport in the Pathfinder’s Journal, by Bill Ward.
Five new monsters, by Benjamin Bruck, Craig Campbell, Adam Daigle, Amanda Hamon, and James Wilbur.
Each monthly full-color softcover Pathfinder Adventure Path volume contains an in-depth adventure scenario, stats for several new monsters, and support articles meant to give Game Masters additional material to expand their campaign. Pathfinder Adventure Path volumes use the Open Game License and work with both the Pathfinder RPG and the world’s oldest fantasy RPG.

I like her staff. It's super Classy. She looks like a classy lady. Also Evil. She must be a villain. Natalya maybe? She looks like a Natalya.
It's Sheila Heidmarch. Venture Captain of Magnimar and the woman who gets the PCs started on the campaign, more or less. AKA: She's not a villain, but she can brain you real well with that quarterstaff.
That's a quarterstaff? It looks more like a Shepard's Crook... or, well, I'm not sure, but it seems like it would be hard to use as a quarterstaff in combat with that raven on the top.

If you're a player, metaplot can become material for you through it's inclusion by the GM. to give an example, I'm running RotRL in Tethyr. Now as far as the AP goes you could make a point that it's basically irrelevant what happens in Waterdeep, Amn and Calimshan. But events there can have heavy influences on what's going on in Tethyr and thereby directly influencing the course of the PC. On the other hand, the success or the failure of the PCs will influence the history of the Lands of Intrigue.
The second thing is something depending on the PCs actions. But the first thing has either to be invented by myself or it has to be delivered by the setting's metaplot. If it's the metaplot, I can use my time to work on other things AND enrich my campaign world with other people's ideas (which is never a bad thing), so it's a win-win situation for me. You have the dynamics fueled by the players and those fueled by the GM/setting and I wouldn't want to run a game where one of those dynamics didn't exist.
Now if you're the GM it may happen that your own canon is add odds with the setting's metaplot. I have still to see that happen in my campaign, though.
Yes, but what do you do if you are playing something that get's royally screwed over by the metaplot? For example, in White Wolf's "Time of Thin Blood" storyline, a powerful Ravnos vampire was killed and it drove every single Ravnos vampire in the entire world insane. They all pretty much killed each other to the point that no powerful elders remained and the few younger ones left were left nearly insane. Now, as a GM/Player you could choose to ignore that, but then you are ignoring metaplot and changing it because your players have a powerful Ravnos you want to survive? If you've gone with every single metaplot change/decision the entire time, is it fair to the other non-Ravnos players to toss "Time of Thin Blood" in the trash bin because it mandates that the Ravnos player has to roll a new character? Or, even more extreme is that every single Tremere Antitribu was called to the sewers or something in some city and killed by Tremere. Every last one, no exceptions. From what I understand it, even in the Camarilla they made the Sabbat venue anyone playing a Tremere Antitribu was declared dead as their character went to the meeting even if the player wasn't able/willing to physically go to the event where it happened.
It would be like the PFS organized play deciding all the elves went back to Kyonin, and banning elves therefore because they all left. Yes, even your PC went with them. Roll a new non-elf character.
Not to say I'd mind more mites, especially riding those spiders, but there are already paper minis in existence of these little buggers: KM #1 had lots of them in the set.
I don't understand the problem, though - you either use the canon or don't. Accordingly, you either play PFS or don't.
I would disagree.
So, you spend lots of time and lots of money building up a Golarion collection, you become invested in the setting, your games are played there, mostly APs, and then someone invalidates a load of the content you and your friends have been assimilating for years.
Then, you and your friends want to enjoy the next AP, or use the next sourcebook but it invalidates what happened to your awesome characters which you retired at the end of the last AP, one of which is a current PC's cousin... That's a problem.
I don't know, my players have done some pretty messed up stuff in Varisia, but I'm really excited for this AP. Even though pretty much every assumption from RotR and some for CotCC have been changed, I don't think it will be incredibly difficult to adjust so it still works in our Varisia. Hell, nearly every city has completely different leadership, it's not like the PCs are interacting with them directly or anything. And even if they were, it's not like tiny parts of the adventure can't be adjusted to move things along smoothly.

An arcane practitioner of greed-based Thassilonian Sin Magic I take it?

Yup. Cover girl is Sheila Heidmarch. She's a fighter/monk. She doesn't cast spells with that staff. She hits things with it.
Ah, that brings back such FOND MEMORIES of my Mémé Bovai and her cherished shillelagh. No one could rock in her chair at 98 miles per hour like she could! ^_~

Anyone can tell me when it will be the best time to subscribe to AP so I'd start my subscription with this issue?
Thanks
Given that the last part of Skull & Shackles is coming out at the same time as this, you need to wait for when the subscriber copies start going out (theoretically the week ending August 10)
Look out for when the subscription option change to have this as the top option

I am considering starting an Adventure Path subscription and I want to start with this one. I am looking forward to that being an option. Currently I can only see books 5 and 6 of the Shattered Skulls path available as the starting book.

The set it as being able to start a subscription with the current offering, or the next upcoming offering in the line. Currently, book #5 S&S is shipping, and book #6 is the next in line. When August rolls around and this starts shipping, it'll swap to being able to start with #1 or #2 of Shattered Star.

In August they will be shipping Book 6 of Skull and Shackles and Book 1 of Shattered Star, so you need to open a thread in the customer service forum and ask for this to be done.

I would email costumer support and let them know you would like to start with the first book of the next AP. I am sure they will work with you, have you get a AP subscription and then they will adjust it to start with the 1st book Shattered.

I doubt if there's any need for a special request. As soon as the August shipments start going out (about a month from now) I'd expect the regular Subscription page to offer a choice of starting with either the 1st or 2nd books of Shattered Star.
