"Dark Roads & Golden Hells is one hell of an achievement… or perhaps eleven of them. Every chapter offers a world of ideas, every paragraph a vision. Open this to any page, and see if it doesn't draw you in. Open Design has created a dazzlingly worthy successor to the Planescape legacy." —Colin McComb, Planescape designer

Open Design's sourcebook of planar adventure for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game delivers a glittering array of new options for GMs who want to take their PCs far from the known lands and into strange realms. This is where Good and Evil battle for souls, the fractal dance of Law and Chaos orders the universe, and the fates weave mortal destinies…

Dark Roads & Golden Hells, by Northlands author Dan Voyce, includes:

  • More than 80 new planes and planar locations including the Loom, the Eleven Hells, and the City of Vultures Beyond
  • 45 new feats and 41 new traits
  • 18 new spells including Combat Geometry, Ghostlock, and Quantum Uncertainty
  • 6 new planar monsters including the fate-eater, rust drake, and spinning hag
  • Infinite possibilities

3 people marked this as a favorite.

Like a modron march of ideas. They are unstoppable.

Really like the new races, and the approach to wings and multiple pairs of arms for the Deva is something I'm really considering adopting now.

Gods bless you for that! I really agonized over making that race as balanced, but varied, as possible. That the Deva were the only not-positive thing Endzeitgeist reviewed in the whole book kinda sucked. So its nice to know someone else thinks they're cool.

Nae prob!

Multi-armed races seem to be a big point of contention for many folks, kind of like psionics. Personally, having an option to get the flavor of four-armed races that has been tailored to not be overpowered and is standard-race appropriate is an absolute godsend for some of us. I'm grateful they're in there. It's honestly something I wish had been in the Advanced Race Guide.

Looking forward to your review, Mikaze! :)

I'm not so good with the staying objective part. :)

Might there be any copies at GenCon?

Yes, there will be copies at the Paizo booth, at least until they sell out. :)

Thanks for your review, Mikaze!

Thanks! Snagged one while I was there! I had intended to try and find you and any of the developers that worked on this to say "Hey, this book really is that awesome" in person, but was unable to do so.

So...

This book really is that awesome. :)

About the deva, it was well designed except I don't get why the name 'deva', it overlaps with the old D&D/PF deva. Also the born ready ability.

I named them Planar Deva (which got shortened once it left my hands) because I designed them off of the religious section >>Here<< and the images >>Here<<

I wanted that overlap across the various religious traditions and figured that Planar Deva was different enough of a name to not matter too much... Oh well. Thanks to our rising star Brian Liberge they work VERY well as a Paragon Path for 4th Ed's standard Deva.

In hindsight, Born Ready could have been done without. Its really fluff written as a mechanic. Since Deva just pop into existence fully formed rather than being born, then growing up, (and because we wrote this book with the intent that even 1st level adventurers could travel the planes) I wanted to make sure that a player wouldn't be born naked/helpless in the middle of nowhere. Unfortunately, I game with a bunch of dicks that would do exactly that. The Born Blessed racial feat is underpowered too, I'm afraid. If I could, I'd change it so that the masterwork quality would be applied to one of any of the type of item selected while the character uses it, not just a single item.
i.e. They choose lockpicks, anytime they pick up a set of lockpicks it becomes masterwork in their hands. If they put it down it reverts to normal and if they pick up a different set of picks those become masterwork.

Back in print after a long gap. Very happy to see this one return to print form, as I think the design and sense of wonder are very, very strong here.
