In the sleepy coastal town of Sandpoint, evil is brewing. An attack by crazed goblins reveals the shadows of a forgotten past returning to threaten the town—and perhaps all of Varisia. The Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path begins with this goblin raid and takes players on an epic journey through the land of Varisia as they track a cult of serial killers, fight backwoods ogres, stop an advancing army of stone giants, delve into ancient dungeons, and finally face off against a wizard-king in his ancient mountaintop city. This hardcover compilation updates the fan-favorite campaign to the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game rules with revised and new content in more than 400 pages packed with mayhem, excitement, and adventure!

Celebrating both the fifth anniversary of the Pathfinder Adventure Path and the tenth anniversary of Paizo Publishing, this new edition expands the original campaign with new options and refined encounters throughout, incorporating 5 years of community feedback.

The Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition contains:
  • All six chapters of the original Adventure Path, expanded and updated for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.
  • Articles on the major locations of Rise of the Runelords: sleepy Sandpoint, the ancient Thassilonian city of Xin-Shalast, and others.
  • Revelations on the sinister magic of Thassilon, with updated spells, magic items, and details on tracking sin points throughout the campaign.
  • A bestiary featuring eight monsters updated from the original Adventure Path, plus an all-new terror.
  • Dozens of new illustrations, never-before-seen characters, location maps, and more!

The Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition is not part of any subscription.

ISBN-13: 978-1-60125-436-8

FAQ:

Q: Will you be doing hardcover compilations of all of your Adventure Paths?
A: No. This is a special celebration of our very first Adventure Path on its 5th Anniversary. Several of the original volumes of Rise of the Runelords have been unavailable in print for a long time, yet it remains one of our most popular adventure paths; that circumstance presents a unique opportunity for us to expand and update it for use with the Pathfinder RPG, and to apply lessons we've learned about making Adventure Paths over the last half-decade. Our other adventure paths are largely still in print, and many of them were designed for use with the Pathfinder RPG to begin with; we have no plans to recompile them.

Q: Is there anything missing from the original AP volumes?
A: Yes—otherwise, this book would be more than 600 pages long! Some of the monsters and other things created for Rise of the Runelords are now part of the official Pathfinder RPG rules, so they're not reprinted here. The original volumes also included monster ecologies, bestiary entries, and other campaign setting material that isn't directly used in the adventure itself; those items are also not present in this collection. The Pathfinder Journal fiction featuring Eando Kline is not presented here either, but it has been compiled—along with the installments from the subsequent two Adventure Paths—as The Compass Stone, now available in ePub form. We have also replaced some of the artwork from the previous edition, and replaced the six individual introductions with one new one.

Marc, Favored Enemy (giants) won't be wasted in this AP, let's put it that way. Wizards won't lack for spellbooks to learn from. Paladins, I think, will do ok in most respects. Clerics specifically aren't that vital, but healers are. Some sort of skill monkey and/or trapbait would be recommended. A scholar of history would prove helpful as well.

I really can't see any class that would be a poor fit, other than Gunslinger, in all honesty. Basically, as long as the character is not focused on aquatic or city or desert themes, they should do alright.

Edit: There is a little bit of city-based adventuring, but it's not the focus of the AP. Mostly out in the wilds and crawling around through ruins.

I'm going to quote myself (which is legal in 48 of the 50 states, as long as you are over 18) and ask this question again ...

Any advice regarding choice of class? Any classes that are a must? Any classes particularly ill-suited for this AP?

IMO if any class is a must I would have to say a Wizard of some kind. A full arcane caster.Wizard would benefit much better than a spontaneous caster.

And actually the big 4 would probably be the best group IMO.

A big old meat shield Fighter or Barbarian.
A Wizard Buffer/CC/Summons
A Rogue or Bard, a bard Archaeologist would fit well.
And a Cleric or better yet a Life Oracle.

My GM just bought the hardback at Gencon, and now our group is super excited to run it. . . problem is we are Virtual Table Top (VTT) because we all live in different places.

Does anyone have advice or suggestions on how to get the maps from the hardcover into digital format for use in a VTT (we use I-tabletop).

I'm thinking about getting the map folio for him in pdf but reading the reviews it does not seem to be a complete map pack for the adventure path.

He is really busy so would rather not make him scan all the images from the book.

Would it make sense to purchase the pdf of ROTHRL for $40 even though he has already purchased the hardback? (sure wish Paizo would allow you get add the pdfs to your downloads for free (or at least discounted) if you buy the hardback)

Any suggestions or advice would be very appreciated.

Thanks!

Dose anyone know what Game Mastery map packs you need to make the floor plans for the dungeons in this path? is Paizo going to release Mini usable maps for this mod? A set of "Rise of the Runelord" Game Mastery map packs would be very cool!

Flip Map Town Square is the only one specifically designed to fit with this.

The problem with your hope is that even if every flip mat and map pack in the last 5 years had been devoted to this, they'd probably only just have been finishing up the maps for Runelords from it's original release...

I suggest that the group goes together on this, each putting in $10 or so for the purchase of the PDF.

On the PDF-for-free question: Paizo gives free PDFs only to their subscribers, as one of the perks they get for committing to products unseen.

I have to say that I loved the art from Burnt Offerings (only the adventure, the ones from the Sandpoint article were were a little atrocious)... the art from the first chaper of the Aniversary Edition not so much. Regardless, a magnific compilation/update.

What about PDF floor plans? Anyone know somewhere to get some kind of floor plan PDFs so you can print out the maps?

Just finished reading the hardcover (which I bought a few weeks ago). Great stuff! Loved it. Great book and a great value (a lot cheaper than buying the adventures individually, and time-saving since I don't need to convert them from 3.5).

Any word on whether or not they're going to do an Anniversary Edition of "Curse of the Crimson Throne" next? What about "Second Darkness"?

That makes sense for all of the adventure paths in Pathfinder RPG, but for the original 3.5 ones, I'd love to see more updated and compiled editions. Here's hoping that they get inspired to do something like this again sometime in the future, even if it takes them a while.

I just got my hands on this book and I wanted to ask:

I read that ecologies sections of this book were removed, are those sections available in my bestiaries? I'd hate to lose the chance to have that kind of info.

All maps pass the copy paste test. Thanks!

By the way, I'll say that the final map of Adventure #1 is quite large - around 44 pixels per 5' square. And I must say, it looks gorgeous. I wish all the maps in your adventures were that large when snagged for VTTs.

What level does this one end at for the PC? I am assuming 16th, but I am not sure.

17-18th level.

Is there anywhere a Map of the Rusty Dragon Inn?

There's a few fan created ones out on the internet that are actually pretty nice quality. Just do a google search.

So... any word on that pdf with just the handouts (and maps)? Will it be available seperately anytime soon (if at all)?

Does it use the same NPC's(non enemy) as the 3.5 version? I ask because I intend to purchase the updated version next month.

Yes. With a caveat. Shalelu and Ameiko are in their incarnations from Jade Regent. The Art for almost all the NPCs has been revamped (most notably Aldern Foxglove). And there are a couple encounters with new NPCs (like Ameiko's Dad).

Is there a map book to go with this? The print version I saw at my FLGS had all the maps marked up with room numbers and GM notes, like a "goblins appear here" box on the map. If I wanted to use the maps in the book in an online game, would they have those same markups on them as well? If so, how do you get rid of them?

The pdf version should come with the interactive maps so you can have certain markings not appear. There are buttons that toggle GM view and Player view.

Could you elaborate, please?

When you download the PDF of an adventure path installment (or, in this case, the anniversary edition of the Rise of the Runelords adventure path) you actually download a ZIP file containing two PDFs - one PDF for the actual book and another PDF containing the maps featured in the adventure (a digital version of the map book you mention). The second PDF has a feature that allows the user to view the maps either in GM mode (with numbers and such) and in player mode (without any numbers). Buttons can be in above the maps that allow the user to toggle between these views.

NOTE: This extra interactive maps PDF is only available starting with the Carrion Crown adventure path (and, as mentioned, Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition). Previous adventure paths did not come with the extra PDF. Not yet anyway.

Ok, I guess the handout-only PDF won't be released anytime soon. So I got a question: if I buy the normal PDF now, will I get the handout PDF included or just the book and the map?

Silver Crusade

I wanted to run this as a regular campaign at a local game store but it appears only the Town square map is available for the first encounter. I saw it asked above but didn't see an answer, are there or will there be any other maps available? I prefer to use printed maps as opposed to drawing on a battle mat. Especially with using all the Rise of Runelords minis it'd be nice to have professional maps too. :(

Obviously I don't represent Paizo, but they've said on a few occasions that doing flip-mats for every map in a path simply isn't financially viable. I think it has to do with most of the maps being in too low a resolution, and needing to be redone.

Hopefully someone will come by with an official answer. :)

I'd like to second Blave's question about whether a handout PDF will be available soon, and take it a little further. I already own all the original volumes of this Adventure Path, and I'm planning on running it soon, so I'd really like to get hold of the additional and revised material that was created for this version. Is there any way I can do this other than buying the full PDF for $42? I'd be happy to pay something for an "update" document, but I don't really need all the content over again.

Andoran

I have a hunch that the answer is going to be no, but I've been wrong before.

A friend has been asking me if the Interactive Maps and handouts would be a separate purchase like Carrion Crown. I don't seen an answer, so I am going to assume not.

They are included in the PDF. I do not know if it comes with the physical book...

Aeshuura wrote:

You got a free copy of the pdf if you had an active AP subscription when the AE, or the Deluxe Collector's AE, started shipping. Other than that, I'm afraid the pdf that includes the interactive maps is a separate purchase. :-S

Andoran

Yeah, I already have the physical book, the pdfs and the included interactive bits and handouts. I had directed a friend here who had bought the physical book from a FLGS thinking the Interactive maps and handouts would be a separate purchase.

Awesome! Thanks! I have a question though... are there any plans to update the web enhancement? If not, do we simply remove the XP costs or are there other adjustments to make?

Not at the moment, no. :)

Quick question.
Is this version of ROTRL 3.5 compatible? Or did they give it the Pathfinder treatment? I'm strictly a 3.5 guy.
I really enjoyed the Shackled City compendium and am hoping for another book like that, as it doesn't like look Savage Tide or Age of Worms volumes are ever going to see the light of day.

Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

This version of RotRL has been updated to Pathfinder rules.

I'm also pretty sure that Paizo don't have the rights to compile Savage Tide or Age of Worms. If anyone was to do it then it would need to be under WotC.

I think it is pretty much safe to say that there won't be any material written explicitly for D&D v.3.5 coming from Paizo. SO, of course, This adventure has been updated to the Pathfinder RPG rules. That doesn't mean you cannot use it with 3.5 rules, but it will require some work. In this case you are probably better off with the PDFs of the original adventures in.

And no, there will not be compilations for Age of Worms or Savage Tide, as Paizo does not have a license for these adventures anymore.

But, I think, you can get the PDFs of all the Mag issues of those so you have all the AP

All of the iconics artwork is from the original, I do believe. At least, I don't recall seeing anything new. Now, there's plenty of new art in there, mind you, but nothing that pertains to the iconics.

Thanks

Forgive me if this has been asked already, but I’m unwilling to read through 1447 posts.

How well do the new classes from the APG & ultimates hold up in this revised edition? Are they mostly unsupported, or have they now become almost mandatory to cover all challenges in the AP.

Before I run this I want to know which books I should allow for an appropriate challenge.

For your question, no, as that offer was if you preordered the AE and had the subscription running.

For Blave, Yes you get the handouts as it's just the one PDF.

Macona: There's not much direct support for the additional classes - a few opponents have been rebuilt where the new classes were approriate, but those are actually very rare. You certainly don't need the new classes to survive, but then again, I don't really see much power creep in them, except for a couple of elements.
