In the sleepy coastal town of Sandpoint, evil is brewing. An attack by crazed goblins reveals the shadows of a forgotten past returning to threaten the town—and perhaps all of Varisia. The Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path begins with this goblin raid and takes players on an epic journey through the land of Varisia as they track a cult of serial killers, fight backwoods ogres, stop an advancing army of stone giants, delve into ancient dungeons, and finally face off against a wizard-king in his ancient mountaintop city. This hardcover compilation updates the fan-favorite campaign to the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game rules with revised and new content in more than 400 pages packed with mayhem, excitement, and adventure!

Celebrating both the fifth anniversary of the Pathfinder Adventure Path and the tenth anniversary of Paizo Publishing, this new edition expands the original campaign with new options and refined encounters throughout, incorporating 5 years of community feedback.

The Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition contains:
  • All six chapters of the original Adventure Path, expanded and updated for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.
  • Articles on the major locations of Rise of the Runelords: sleepy Sandpoint, the ancient Thassilonian city of Xin-Shalast, and others.
  • Revelations on the sinister magic of Thassilon, with updated spells, magic items, and details on tracking sin points throughout the campaign.
  • A bestiary featuring eight monsters updated from the original Adventure Path, plus an all-new terror.
  • Dozens of new illustrations, never-before-seen characters, location maps, and more!

The Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition is not part of any subscription.

ISBN-13: 978-1-60125-436-8

FAQ:

Q: Will you be doing hardcover compilations of all of your Adventure Paths?
A: No. This is a special celebration of our very first Adventure Path on its 5th Anniversary. Several of the original volumes of Rise of the Runelords have been unavailable in print for a long time, yet it remains one of our most popular adventure paths; that circumstance presents a unique opportunity for us to expand and update it for use with the Pathfinder RPG, and to apply lessons we've learned about making Adventure Paths over the last half-decade. Our other adventure paths are largely still in print, and many of them were designed for use with the Pathfinder RPG to begin with; we have no plans to recompile them.

Q: Is there anything missing from the original AP volumes?
A: Yes—otherwise, this book would be more than 600 pages long! Some of the monsters and other things created for Rise of the Runelords are now part of the official Pathfinder RPG rules, so they're not reprinted here. The original volumes also included monster ecologies, bestiary entries, and other campaign setting material that isn't directly used in the adventure itself; those items are also not present in this collection. The Pathfinder Journal fiction featuring Eando Kline is not presented here either, but it has been compiled—along with the installments from the subsequent two Adventure Paths—as The Compass Stone, now available in ePub form. We have also replaced some of the artwork from the previous edition, and replaced the six individual introductions with one new one.

Just got this on pdf(love hardcover books in general but living in a small apartment and downsizing to an even smaller place in 2 months is hard on a massive book collection) and I have to say that when combined with my subscription this book is very reasonable on pdf. About $35 for 6 modules seems like a steal, and my first flip through confirms that. This is an excellent product to have on pdf, and I'm eager to read it more deeply in preparations for running it(hopefully soon).

Just got mine at my local FLGS today. Damn it's gorgeous.

Getting pretty bad that it has not even shipped to some subscribers as of yet but game stores have them.

I'm wondering if those who have already received their books/pdf could answer me a question.

I had decided to run this adventure path long before I knew this anniversary collection was coming out. Player scheduling conflicts forced me to delay the game until now.

I have already ordered the new book, but won't receive it until AFTER the first couple of game sessions. So until then I planned on using the old versions I own.

So my question is...
Are there significant changes to the anniversary edition that would make it inadvisable to start with the old versions? Players will be starting from scratch with Burnt Offerings.

I've read the updated player's guide, nothing seems very different there.

early encounters:

They have moved the dead priest into a crypt/vault, which means the players have to fight two skeletons left as a trap by tsuto (from a robe of bones with 2 skellies left, the robe lies discarded in the corner).

There is an encounter with Ameiko's dad, establishing Ameiko and her father's character (she has given the PCs free rooms for a week for their goblin slaying: he comes in drunk one dinner-time and starts arguning with her, she snarks, he disowns her and gives some lip about her dead mother... teaching players that it is not all happy families, locals prefer Ameiko to Lonjiku and thus prepping the Tsuto debacle...)

That's about it for book 1

While my hardcopy is scheduled to be here until Monday (7/23), the good news is that I've had my PDF for a week now. I've been converting on the fly (more or less) since I started running RotRL, but tomorrow night, I'll make the transition to the official PFRPG version when the heroes ascend to the second floor of Misgivings.

The new style of stat block in here with name, CR and XP all on on line.

Just trying it out or the new way you are going to have them?

We're trying it out... but if folks really like it, the earliest we can adopt that into an AP will be next February.

I'm not a huge fan of it, I think it works alright for 1 of things, but when you have multiple named creatures using the same stat block you can run into some size/space ugliness (see page 178 for instance).

Perhaps dropping the hp from that line but keep the CR and XP would be better?

Or drop the word each and hope people can figure it out.

Still waiting for my book to show up, but here is a couple of photos I just found online of an unboxing :

I received mine on Friday and I have to say it is absolutely beautiful. It is truly a labor of love by all involved. I personally want to thank you for all that you put into this. I already have owned the original AP's and have been a subscriber since the beginning but I couldn't resist the Anniversary Edition and I'm not disappointed.

Kudos and thank you for this.

Thank you SilverHair

I preordered mine in September of 2011 and have been eagerly anticipating it's arrival. When anticipation builds up expectations there can always be disappointment. Words cannot accurately describe the level of joy and satisfaction during my initial thumb through of this tome (the first page I opened up to was the Scribbler, poetic). For me, it was all that I anticipated and more. If I was a little more articulate I would write a review. The reviews that were written seem to be the same old personal gripes and not objective screenings. I find it funny that people balk at prices and complain about "hidden" or "added" costs with supplementals. This is an expensive hobby and I accept that. But with that acceptance I expect quality and there is no doubt that this book is of high quality. I will be purchasing all the support material, including the minis and pawns without question. In the end, I hope to run a memorable and enjoyable campaign. Well done Paizo, another home run and further solidifying my continued support for your products. Wizards if your listening, beg the Paizo people to teach you a seminar on how to keep the fans happy. I have no problem shelling out my hard earned money for my hobby. I understand that at the end of the day, profits have to be made, hell, I want someone to make a lot of money on gaming so they continue to put out more stuff. But I want to be taken care of and Paizo does that.

I preordered and have been reading it nonstop and it's helped my GM with some areas he was stuck on with Jade Regent and I love the newer style layout. I'd love to see more Adventure paths this detailed and put-together. And those stat-blocks. I can't say enough about them. Also, thank you for the new pic of Jubrayl Vhiski. Thank you so much. *scuttles off*

I was trying to order a copy from amazon, and i am used to the delay in release but the date of release amazon has for this book is ridiculous, June 8, 2013.

Does Pazio know the possible reason for this or are they as clueless as Amazon is with Pazio product releases?

I am fairly sure Amazon just puts in random dates until they actually get the product.

well the date they chose is completely out of the ball park and hitting an old man watching television. Causing him to go into a coma, which lasts until he is reborn to a white trash couple who became millionaires after a chance winning of the lottery.

In other words it's ridiculous.

Finally received my shipping notification for my subscriptions so I downloaded the PDF's.

Wow, the book looks absolutely amazingsome!!!

I just wish I had not been running the original for the past year and was just getting ready to start anew from this book.

Oh well, time to find a second group to run this for so I can use this book and the new minis.

Ditto re: Amazon difficulties

I receive a notice from Amazon.ca this morning that told me that my order for Rise of the Runelords Anniv Edition was delayed unti January, 8, 2013.

Perhaps what is happening here is that there is no different SKU# or anything else in their database to indicate that the collector's edition is different from the already released hardcover version of the book. Just a guess.

I know that other Canadian customers have mentioned the same issue with the "delay" of the book and some of them don't even know it's now out. You might want to look into it.

I'm on the phone with Amazon right now. I got the same e-mail giving 10 Jan 2013 in the US.

The Deluxe Edition of the hardcover isn't being released into distribution at all, so I don't think that's the source of the issue. Regardless, I will poke the Sales Sensei to see if they can go shake a tree to get the issue resolved.

Then again...if it is somehow the source of the issue and Amazon is willing to send us a copy of the Deluxe Edition at the cost the offered for the standard one and still pay Paizo their price for the Deluxe Edtion...

Hmm. So, should I get the PDF and hope for the best? heheheh

Liz is correct. The Deluxe Edition is a product exclusive to Paizo, so Amazon wouldn't be receiving that kind of information from us anyway. I do, however, highly recommend the PDF if you're interested in it. We packed it full of neat stuff (hyperlinks on the sides of the pages, interactive maps, handouts and a Lite version!). :)

I still like my idea. Call Amazon, when they say that this does not come out until next year, email the person I talked to a pic of me holding the book. Then see what they have to say.

Just went on Barnes and Noble website, and they have the book for $38.54 plus tax, and they expect it to arrive on the 31st of this month! This is why I love bookstores like B&N, and cried the the closure of Borders. Bookstores for the common people are awesome! :)

If B&N will have it by the 31st, so will Amazon. It's not like they have different sources for the book.

While I miss Borders, I wish Barnes and Noble would follow in their fate.

This problem is usually generated by our distributor who sells to Amazon, and not Amazon itself. I know for sure the distributor has received the book. I cannot yet tell if Amazon has picked up their share of the goodies. I have also pinged our distributor to fix this error.

Just got my copy of the physical book, and I sadly have to say, I'm really, really disappointed. The page backgrounds are just a hideous color, some weird parchment-esque beige darkening a bit towards the bottom, and with the black text, the bottom third or so of most pages is basically unreadable to me. I never noticed it before this because all I ever downloaded was the Lite PDF, and that one was perfectly readable, but this book? Almost worthless to me, I'm very sorry to say.

For what it's worth, though, my dyslexic wife doesn't have any issue with the pages. She can read it without any problem and doesn't know what I'm complaining about. :\

To each their own, I guess. The background is one of my favorite parts of the design, actually.

I've looked through mine extensively, and while there is a slight darkening at the very bottom right corner of the page, I struggle to see how anyone has a hard time reading it. I can read it perfectly fine in dim lighting. Different people have different sensitivities, I guess, but that little edge hardly makes it unreadable. And the parchment design for the pages was a wonderful touch, I thought. I'm a fan of such decisions.

I'd have to agree with your wife on this one, good sir!

The PDF is much larger than the Beginner Box, so the content isn't hyperlinked. However, there are navigation tabs on the sides of the pages that allow you to jump between sections of the book really easily.
