In the sleepy coastal town of Sandpoint, evil is brewing. An attack by crazed goblins reveals the shadows of a forgotten past returning to threaten the town—and perhaps all of Varisia. The Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path begins with this goblin raid and takes players on an epic journey through the land of Varisia as they track a cult of serial killers, fight backwoods ogres, stop an advancing army of stone giants, delve into ancient dungeons, and finally face off against a wizard-king in his ancient mountaintop city. This hardcover compilation updates the fan-favorite campaign to the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game rules with revised and new content in more than 400 pages packed with mayhem, excitement, and adventure!

Celebrating both the fifth anniversary of the Pathfinder Adventure Path and the tenth anniversary of Paizo Publishing, this new edition expands the original campaign with new options and refined encounters throughout, incorporating 5 years of community feedback.

The Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition contains:
  • All six chapters of the original Adventure Path, expanded and updated for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.
  • Articles on the major locations of Rise of the Runelords: sleepy Sandpoint, the ancient Thassilonian city of Xin-Shalast, and others.
  • Revelations on the sinister magic of Thassilon, with updated spells, magic items, and details on tracking sin points throughout the campaign.
  • A bestiary featuring eight monsters updated from the original Adventure Path, plus an all-new terror.
  • Dozens of new illustrations, never-before-seen characters, location maps, and more!

The Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition is not part of any subscription.

ISBN-13: 978-1-60125-436-8

FAQ:

Q: Will you be doing hardcover compilations of all of your Adventure Paths?
A: No. This is a special celebration of our very first Adventure Path on its 5th Anniversary. Several of the original volumes of Rise of the Runelords have been unavailable in print for a long time, yet it remains one of our most popular adventure paths; that circumstance presents a unique opportunity for us to expand and update it for use with the Pathfinder RPG, and to apply lessons we've learned about making Adventure Paths over the last half-decade. Our other adventure paths are largely still in print, and many of them were designed for use with the Pathfinder RPG to begin with; we have no plans to recompile them.

Q: Is there anything missing from the original AP volumes?
A: Yes—otherwise, this book would be more than 600 pages long! Some of the monsters and other things created for Rise of the Runelords are now part of the official Pathfinder RPG rules, so they're not reprinted here. The original volumes also included monster ecologies, bestiary entries, and other campaign setting material that isn't directly used in the adventure itself; those items are also not present in this collection. The Pathfinder Journal fiction featuring Eando Kline is not presented here either, but it has been compiled—along with the installments from the subsequent two Adventure Paths—as The Compass Stone, now available in ePub form. We have also replaced some of the artwork from the previous edition, and replaced the six individual introductions with one new one.

Bestiary Monsters:

Black Magga
Carrionstorm
Forgefiend (Scanderig)
Lamia-kin, Hungerer
Lamia-kin, Kuchrima
Runeslave
Scarlet Walker
Skull Ripper

Andoran

OOOOOOOOOO

Does this mean the Lamia have their own subtype?

Andoran

I was four for six in my predictions, not bad I guess. I picked the Harridan but I assume it became a template in the book as James said it would. So four and a half.

These are the monsters that haven't been updated to PFRPG:
Smoke Haunt (PF#3)
Argorth (PF#3) -- are they cut or did they add them to the Black Magga stat block?
Ercinee(PF#5)
Craig Spider (PF#6) -- did they just use the giant spider with a template?

Also Night Monarch and Yethazamri(PF#5) the heralds, but they don't count but I left them here for the sake of completeness.

So somewhere between 2 through 4 not updated. Once we get confirmation on the Argorth and Craig Spider I'll put these in the Bestiary 4 thread.

I preordered this on August, 9th 2011 and I haven't gotten the email or pdf yet.

A little worried, but I am trying to keep the faith so far....

But it'd be nice to be able to get this, port it to my iPad and read it for the rest of the night in my LaZBoy. If wishes were horses and all that.

(It'd also be nice if they moved Paizocon to the center of the United States so more of us could go to it. Some of us refuse to fly and Seattle is a bit of a haul from Arkansas to drive...)

The book looks great. There was a panel dedicated to the new book here and a lot of good behind the scenes info was shared. Why somethings that were out before that got added back and the like. I believe that panel was recorded so I am sure it will be available soon. Xanesha looks like she's more hitable but I'll have to get to my old copy to be sure. There are a lot of things fleshed out and added back in. I look forward to reading it cover to cover and maybe even running it soon.

If you weren't picking it up from Paizocon, then there is no chance of having the PDF.

Since they had both Wednesday & Friday out of the office, it wouldn't surprise me if they had a number of in the next week... emails to go

Just discussed plans with my current tabletop group (we're coming up to the end of book 2 of Jade Regent). It looks like I'll be stepping in as GM on alternate weeks, running RotRL. Yippee!

They said a few times that for those not attending Paizocon books would go out next week. I think they just did attendees this week so books could be picked up.

I doubt that Paizocon will be moving to the middle of the country. Paizo is in Redmond and logistically it does not make sense to go across the country for a CON that is really about one company and their products (and 3pp products that support their game).

And I hope they always stay here (home).

Thanks for the intel on why I haven't gotten the email yet.

As for the other, I understand your point of view. However, I'd like to go to one someday soon, and for myself and my East Coast friends who love Paizo; I hope they consider having it in the Midwest one of these days.

I won't hold my breath, but no harm in hoping they might bring the barn to the other horses someday....

If there's anyone in the Dayton, Ohio area planning to run this, I'd love to get in on it.

I love this AP.

I just restarted my pathfinder sub for the 15% discount on this guy. Was going to wait for Shattered Star to start again, but since I was buying this anyway I figured I may as well get the discount...

Oh definately. Mine next? It's nearly midnight, but i can wait longer. :P

Qadira

Hey,

don't know if this was discussed before but my stamina was insufficent to run through 21 forums pages, so there you have it.

one of the main weakness points of RotRL AP is, according to many people, the fact that each module is onlt loosley connected to the previous ones (and by extention to future ones as well), which for me is a very negative aspect of an AP.
For example, in this regard I think CotCT AP was the superior choice, as evrey module was 100% coherent with the others, while something like Kingmaker where the only connection between modules was that they happened one after the other in roughly the same place. What bothered me was that there was nearly no way for the PCs to know that there is a force pulling strings that's making all the bad stuff happen, and therefore are unawere of the existance of a "plot" for most of the ap.

So is this really an issue with RotRL? and if so, was the matter addressed and changed in this revised addition (similarily to how SCAP was revised, way back in the days of Dungeon) ?

thanks!

Technically, it would be PDT, not PST. ;-)

Paizocon Down Time?

@Lord Snow:
I think, I remember a statement, where JJ (?) talks about strengthening the connection between different chapters of the AP, but can't remember where I read that, or what was actually done to do so.

I am going to be running this. But I have not looked at the old version at all. Whats the recommended point buy, 15 or 20? Mostly likely just be 4 players if that matters.

Andoran

Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

Pacific Daylight Time.

I don't know what is recommended, but I gave my players the option of either 4d6 drop low or the heroic array (which is equivalent to 15 point buy).

I like the heroic array, personally. But 15 (its equivalent) and 20 are good picks, depending on the size of your group. Typically, the difficult fights will be difficult regardless of their point buy, but if you dont want your players falling asleep fighting mooks, the lower the better.

That's a matter of taste and I can only speak from my personal experience though. It might be different on your table.

I don't like using the word never, but it is pretty appropriate when it comes to PaizoCon. We started PaizoCon because we wanted a convention that every one of our employees could participate in. Thus, it had to be something local to Paizo, because the cost of bringing all those employees anywhere else in the world would be prohibitive. Thus, I think it will never end up anywhere other than in the Seattle area.

That said, for folks on the East Coast and the Midwest, we send almost all of our company to GenCon in Indianapolis each year. It doesn't have the small con feel of a PaizoCon, but it does have a lot of the same seminars given each year and we hang out in our booth and talk to folks there and sign autographs. So you can get some of the PaizoCon feeling there.

Yep, that was a point of emphasis for me when I was helping to develop this anniversary edition. I GMed the whole campaign and found the connections between the modules tenuous at best sometimes. So I worked with James to find ways to make it all feel more like a cohesive whole. We ended up putting in some of the things that I did as a GM to make it work when I ran it. Hopefully, it fixes this problem for most people.

There are definitely aspects that are missing as far as connections, it's true, although I don't think that was necessarily a horrible thing in the early modules.

Spoiler:
The Sihedron Rune made for a wonderful recurring aspect in those early adventures that allowed PCs to realize there is some overarching plot line happening.

I think the most tenuous connection that I've dealt with thus far was between books 2 & 3, but I through a letter into the BBEG's possessions (an idea yanked from the forums here, in fact) that steered toward the Ferry and my players pounced upon it!

On a slight side note, this RotRAE is probably the one I've been most eager to get my hands in well over a year . . . pleeeeeeeaaaaaase process that order faster, Paizo! I'm in desperate need to see the changes and how this new version plays out! I need that PDF ASAP!

(I'm just joking a bit here, of course. I know you all are working hard on all this . . . )

PS Give me my e-mail all ready!! ;)

Two questions: do your notifications usually come on Mondays and what part of the country are you in?

If my own memory serves me correctly there is no definite day that shipping notices go out. It mainly depends on when the product arrives at the warehouse and when the shipping department gets to begin packing boxes. Also they do not ship to one part of the country first every time. If I am wrong perhaps one of the Paizo staff will correct me.

Just my 2 cp.

It's all fairly random, apart from sending to me last.

Still nothing here either @6:30 PM NYC time.
Looking forward to downloading my PDF, preordered Aug 2011. :)

DentalJaguar's not a subscriber, though, according to his lack of tags, and he got his shipping notice, too.

My subscriptions seem usually to ship on Tuesdays, but I'm concerned that the extra orders no doubt generated by the RotR hardback might put the warehouse team behind ... not to mention PaizoCon hangover. :)

AFAIK they and you get everything first. It's easier for the warehouse crew to just go "One of everything on this month's release list" than to go "OK, one of this, and one of this, but not that, and one of those, and..."

So I got the posting notice for my Subs but not one for this..I was expecting them to be shipped together.

I just sent CS an email asking to combine both subscription and this one. I find that is the easiest way to do it.

Just received access to the PDF. This is a really amazing product. I'm a big fan of the player handouts - the PDFs dont usually see any use in my games, but if things like these were pulled from the adventure PDF, collated and added to a separate file (like you did here) it would be a very different story.

Is the revised style part of a "new look" for APs or is that just for this product (or is it perhaps an "old look" I've just been slow to notice)?

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber; Pathfinder Maps, Pawns Subscriber

Just glancing through. Is beautiful.

However, the new Goblin Warchanter will not have the same creep factor on my players that the old one did. However I do have the miniature of the 'classic'. :)

If the preview images for future hardcovers is any indication I would say it is the new layout design. It looks too much like a video game strategy guide for my liking.

Shattered Star will be using (essentially) the same style of layout as the previous Adventure Paths—we wanted to try doing something new with the Rise of the Runelords book.

Hrm, it seems my order is still "pending" for both this and my Skull and Shackles subscription. Should I be worried about the payment going through and getting my PDF, or does that just mean it hasn't started shipping yet?

Spoilers abound.

Being an avid VTT user, I downloaded the PDF and started inspecting the maps as they would appear when I copy them without the labels (the interactive maps don't suit my needs because I don't want openings for secret doors in the walls, and I don't want secret areas entirely removed from the maps).

The maps I am trying are the ones in the chapters themselves, not the interactive maps.

Problem maps are as follows:

Spoiler:

Chapter 1: All three Thistletop maps fail to paste as a usable map. Instead, they paste as a non distinct black mass.

Chapter 2: Similar problem with Farmlands, Foxglove Manor, Foxglove Townhouse, Seven's Sawmill and Shadow Clock

Chapter 3: All good.

Chapter 4: All good.

Chapter 5: Festering Maze of Sloth pastes badly.

Chapter 6: All good.

This is with Adobe Reader 8.1.2, the version I use that is friendly toward grabbing labelless maps.

Cheers. I'll be interested to see it in my hand. It looks great to me so far (other than the little thumbnail on the even pages which dont quite work for me), but it's hard to tell on a screen.
