Why?
-There is not a single 1 star miniature in this set. Even the baddest ones get 2 stars from me.
-Of the 14 LARGE minis none is so unique that you can´t use it in other adventures. Some are quite essential ones. The worst one gets 3 stars!
-The only set to include HUGE miniatures!!! One of those is 5 stars, one is 4 stars, one 3 stars and one 2 stars.
-The diversity. This set has every kind of creature from Abberation to Undead. 64 creatures that make up one of the most most memorable campaigns in the history of Roleplaying!

Pathfinder Battles—Rise of the Runelords

This second set is the best after set #9 (Dungeons Deep).

Of course it doesnt come with a mini for every creature you encounter but most the gaps can he filled with a pawn or a paper mini. I was surprised that judge ironbriar didnt have a mini though. This is as far as i am in the AP so hopefully the rest of the tough guys have minis.

The rune giant would be flawless and one of my favorite pieces if not for his eyes being to close together, leaving him looking... lets say, simple. I also have a issue with the ogrekin. The book has awesome artwork for these monsters but the mini set gives you a generic looking ogerkin. Not a fan. I understand they do this so that you can use the same one for every encounter, but I'd rather have separate ones that look as awesome as the art.

On the upside most the rest of the pieces are pretty nice. The female sorcereSS, dwarf ranger, amieko, and several others are all excellent quality and i will use them for many more games after runelords. The stone giants, forgefiend, and the ogre brute are some of my favorites. And the rune giant is still awesome, even though he looks like he rode the short bus

Pathfinder Battles—Rise of the Runelords

I got my case a couple weeks ago. And this set was specifically made for this Adventure Path. But if you use minis and are running this awesome campaign, then these minis are nothing short of essential. Add to the fact that there are simply beautifully made, it is hard for someone running this Adventure Path not to give it five stars. They are expensive. But anything that is a step up in quality will and should cost more. I could see if you are not running the Adventure Path that the whole set may not be useful to you. There are still some nice minis well worth owning no matter what system you may be playing. There are some incredible minis of Player Character types in this set that a player playing a Dwarf Ranger, Human Female Sorceress/Wizard, Human Female Bard, or a number of different Human or Half-Elf Fighter types would find very useful for their PC. And there are monsters like both the Lamia and Lamia Matriarch that has really not been seem before in PPM. The Ogres, Stone Giants, Goblins etc. are all beautifully made and useful no matter the campaign. This is truly a great set.

Pathfinder Battles—Rise of the Runelords

Up front I need to say that I am running Rise of the Runelords.
I am a long time collector of minis, going back to the Harbinger DDM set, but I had not picked up the Heroes and Monsters set, because for the last few years, I figured I had enough pre-painted plastic. The quality of the RotRL sculpts changed that.

The commons of this set are easily as good quality as many of the uncommons from DDM. The Bugbear Hero has got to be the best common miniature I've ever seen. The large uncommons (I got the lamia matriarch, stone giant champion and ogre brute) were all fantastic - I couldn't believe the stone giant champion wasn't a rare until I looked it up. The humanoid figures all had great poses and distinctive paint-jobs - easily distinguishable among the thousand or so DDM minis I have.

The only negative I can come up with is really minor in the grand scheme of things - the harpy was a little small, in comparison to the other humanoids in the RotRL set and the DDM harpies I have.

Pathfinder Battles—Rise of the Runelords

This review is based on a purchase of three boosters.

The look of the figures seems to have been tweaked somewhat - whereas I found H&M too cartoony, these monsters seem a little more "real" (stupid as that feels to type).

There are a number of truly exceptional minis - the huge Karzoug statue, the large Wendigo and the medium Lamia Kuchrima really stood out to me. Overall, they are well designed, well painted and, for the most part, well chosen for their use in the RotRL AP.

My few complaints are the inclusion of some iconics - not necessary for the AP and, given some AP monsters have been excluded, it seems like a misallocation. I'd prefer the specific sets remain specific and the generic sets contain the generic figures. I guess this will make the set more widely useful, but I would have preferred a second ghoul sculpt in place of Larsk or Seoni, for example (not that they are bad minis - just not what you need to run Rise of the Runelords).

My other criticism is the fragility of many of the sculpts. A number of figures popped off their bases when I removed them from the packaging (none had arrived broken in transit though). It seems to me there are less 'footpads' anchoring the minis in this set than H&M and that may have contributed to this issue - certainly all the figures of mine which broke apart where anchored to the base with just a couple of plastic pins. I know there has been some discussion about these and criticism of them in the H&M set, but in my view they dont stand out in play at all - just when you closely examine the figure. I'd much rather have the minis set on bases properly and be more robust than have to store them and handle them gingerly.

Having said that, the sculpting of weapons/etcetera out of a softer, more malleable plastic was an improvement over H&M, which seems to me to have been a little more brittle overall than this release.

I got three cases, two included at least one of each sculpt (with duplications pretty much skewed towards those figures you'd like to have multiple copies of). The other case was missing two rares, but had a good spread of the other figures. From early case reports, it seems that Wizkids did a good job of achieving a high completion rate. It seems that, if you are unlucky enough not to have got the complete set of 60 figures in a standard case, you are likely to be missing 2-3 rares.

It's pretty close to five stars, in my view. The inclusion of non-AP figures in an AP set and the tendency of some to snap off drop it to four.

Pathfinder Battles—Rise of the Runelords

This set is a definite improvement over the first set, in my opinion.
A case (standard + huge) of Rise of the Runelords has 134 miniatures. Each standard booster has 1 large and 3 medium/small figures.

The detail and paint jobs appear much more worked and polished over the first set.

Only a few slightly negative comments about this set:
- The overhanging plastic on the Karzoug statue fills some of the adjacent squares, preventing other figures from being placed adjacent to it.
- Ameiko Kaijitsu's facial paint job (compared with the preview figure from the blogs) doesn't express her youth very well. I know small miniatures are difficult to detail properly, but the perceived proportions (as a result of the shape of the mold or the paint job) on this miniature were somewhat disappointing.
- The mounted goblins appear somewhat smaller than their standing counterparts.
- The storm giant appears very plain for its size could have taken more detail.
- Despite ordering a full case, I did not receive a full set. I was one of the unlucky ones that lacks 3 rares.

Overall, however, I'm very happy with this set.

Great variety of size and creature types, the paint jobs are by far the best of any pre-painted minis, and the sculpts are beautiful.

I purchased 2 bricks locally and I'm totally happy with the contents.

The ogres are very detailed. The teeth, and facial expressions are perfect. Malfenshnekor is flat out creepy. Orik Vankaskerkin's mold is sweet; love the shield. The other good thing about these minis is that the scale is consistent amongst each other. No humans who are as large as the ogres, etc. Thanks for that!

One minor issue was the Forgefiend I received was not attached to its base. Easy enough to glue down, but something I have to repair. The 'hockey pucks' that some of the figures are mounted on are distracting. I didn't think that would bother me, but it looks silly. Again that is what I consider a minor issue. My last issue is with the cost. These are not inexpensive by any stretch. Bring the cost down by 25%, and you will receive 5 stars. Usually, I can grab a case of a set of minis. I had to settle for 2 bricks instead, and I'm not on a shoestring budget. This is a lot of cash to plop down for not even a full set.

I will probably buy a huge brick next, but will need to wait a bit. I'd recommend this to other gamers, esp. if they plan to run the Rise of the Runelords AP.

Pathfinder Battles—Rise of the Runelords

The minis are wonderful. The owner was very nice and let him try a different two and another storm giant and the demon thing. So 4 of the 5 were the same sculpt. What is up with that? Now I could see a double but in a set of 6 4 of them were the Storm giant! He opened the last of the 6 in the case and it was the lamia. I don't need 4 storm giants! thankfully the owner is a friend and let him buy the three different ones but he's still stuck with three storm giants.

Now the sculpts were cool and generally painted well and all the smaller ones gave a good selection of what he bought and I am excited to get my smaller ones. But these huge ones are a waste and even the Rune Giant, which I did get cheaper as I'm a subscriber and all is nice but how often will you really use it.

(4 stars)Daniel Donny Clarkhttps://paizo.com/products/btpy8rqs?Pathfinder-Battles-Rise-of-the-Runelords2012-08-30T12:06:14Z
Pathfinder Battles—Rise of the Runelords

I bought a full case and Rune Giant, along with the continuing subscription. In the cases I got a complete set (yay!) with a fair random distribution of repeats. The only issues were A) two minis had come off their base and B) one dwarven ranger had bits of white printing residue all over his face, making him look like he has a terrible skin disease, or is covered in mucus. Finally C) some of the commons had ridiculously bad face paint jobs that make them look like they have been clubbed by an ogre with the ugly stick.

All in all the overall quality of the miniatures is good, with rares being the best (exception- storm giantess). A tiny bit of detail would bring the set to 5 stars (mouths not being uniform skin color when closed for instance). Coloration is also quite different from the various images on the box and online (that's you especially, Young Red Dragon).

I will of course continue to buy, collect, use WizKids products and only hope that the community's comments are heard and taken into consideration!

Great job guys (think of this 4 as a 4.5!)

DDC

DDC
Daniel Donny Clark2012-08-30T12:06:14ZPathfinder Battles: Rise of the Runelords Standard Booster Brick: Simply Amazing and a real step up. (5 stars)Cat-thulhuhttps://paizo.com/products/btpy8rql?Pathfinder-Battles-Rise-of-the-Runelords-Standard-Booster-Brick2012-08-27T10:47:16Z
Pathfinder Battles: Rise of the Runelords Standard Booster Brick

Found a few boosters at my brick and mortar while await my case from Paizo. Here is a quick review of what I got, completre with typos most likely. (May flesh it out when my case arrives)

Rune Giant (yeah they sold him seperately aty a great price): A+. Simply put - an amazing job. Paint job excellent, sculpt is dynamic and very high quality, but then you expect that for the gargantuan case incentive. It's worth having one in any collection.

Lamia Harridan: C+, Far better in person than the images on paizo. Sculpt is very good, except the front right which appears to have the wrong anatomy, bends all wrong. The only let down is the paint job, there is far less shading and the eyes appear to have missed the mark - painted below the sculpted eyes. This of course only seems less effectively painted because the rest of the set seems to have such a very high standard of paint job.

Jaagreth Kreeg: A+, Brilliant. Scuplt and paint job are amazing. Full of menace, dynamic and full of detail. Great paint job with great shading. A real step up in the Ogres.

Forgefiend: B, Not sure what to make of this one. It's odd shape takes a little gettign used to, but it works. A simple paint job but nicely done - except very dark, so the clear orange in the belly doesn't really show through as well as it could.

Seoni: B+. I really like this one. Nice pose, great paint job and great detail - except the face. There seems to be little detail on the face, and the lips seem to have missed the mark, giving the face an anteater aspect to it. This is not particularly noticeable, except up close.

Warrior of Wrath. B. Its a fighter with a great weapon. Detail and pose are very good. The greatsword is very soft and flexible so no chance of breakage. A B beacuse it's common, you can get them easillty and despite this has a great paint job and detail.

Viorian Dekanti. B+. Looks great with a solid pose and plenty of detail, but the gold is very flat (almost no shading)

Harpy: B+. Picture do this no justice. Its pose and deeatil are very, very good. It's only possible drawback is scale, it seems quite small by comparison to other prepainted harpies. The detail is mnuch better though.

Sinspawn. A. Love it. Brilliant detail right down to the head, with the split lower jaw and lolling tongue. Great paint job (again a common so the standard is very high).

Goblin Warchanter. A+. Love this little dude. Awesome detail and beautifully painted, with a face full of character.

Overall the standard is incredible. Great sculpys, fantastic paint jobs, even on commons. I can see the proice as a detractor btu the quality makes up for this in many ways - you may not get a case but I think singles are certainly worth the money you would drop.

As for the bases - I think the little foot blobs are less intrisive than in heroes and mopnsters. They are still there in many but I just didn't notice them as much as before.

No breakages and no sign of weakness in the plastci or sculpts that might lead to breakage.

All in all this may be THE BEST set of prepainted I have collected - and I've been goinf his D&D harbinger. This sets a new benchmark for minis in my mind.

Pathfinder Battles: Rise of the Runelords Standard Booster Brick

Found a few boosters at my brick and mortar while await my case from Paizo. This review is based on my ownership of the following minis:

9 Ogrekin
11 Denizen of Leng
12 Redcap
25 Harsk, Dwarf Ranger
36 Shalelu Androsana
44 Yeti
46 Jagraath Kreeg
47 Lucrecia

First of all, there are a lot of improvements over Heroes and Monsters here:

• The plastic is softer where it needs to be (weapons, etc), but remains hard in the bases
• The paint jobs are better — the only truly poor job is the Denizen of Leng, and average quality is up
• The packaging has been cut back (though could stand to be reduced further)

However, a few niggles from H&M remains:

• There are black plastic "blobs" where some of the minis attach to the bases
• The large bases and just a tiny bit larger than DDM large bases — meaning so items designed for DDM (like my Dapper Devil markers) don't fit

The big problem that prevents me from buying these in volume (despite my love of all things RotRL) remains the price, especially with the huge figures. $25 a pop is simply far more than I'm willing to pay. Shave $10 and we'll talk. At these prices, the volume on huge figures will be so low that they're almost certain to lose money, and I fear that less astute observers might conclude that huge figures simply aren't viable. In fact, getting the price of entire line down — even ten or fifteen percent — may well make the line more profitable, and certainly more sustainable.

That said, I sincerely hope that the box I got is truly representative of the set, as these 4 were, WOW.

I'll start with the Large and then go from common to rare on the 3 others.

Large - Stone Giant Champion - A solid, if lanky stone giant throwing a boulder. This one looks like it stepped right off the cover of the book, and the painting is clean, there are no mold lines. An excellent piece, especially when compared to other models currently available.

Common - Sinspawn Axeman - For a common this guy is very well done, once again, no slop glob paint job, but still relatively few steps. Equal to the best uncommons in quality from DDM (and better than 90% of the others).

Uncommon - Tusto Kaijitsu - Quite possibly the least useful mini in the box to me. He's an Asian Archer in western garb and while well done (though the fletching on his arrow is a little largish), he is very much a niche piece that I am just not sure how useful he'll be. If anything cost the box (at the set) its fifth star it is the prevalence of pieces like this that are really only useful in the AP and not anywhere else.

Rare - Warchief Ripnugget - My only Booster and I get the one rare I have been psyched about since the reveal. It looks even better in person than it did in the reveal and the reveal was pretty awesome. there is a slight mould line down the spine of the gecko and a visible seam where its tail is attached, but these are minor quibbles on an otherwise outstanding piece. The only real downside is that he is also a Niche piece (how often are you going to need a goblin on a Gecko? Seriously.)

Pathfinder Battles—Rise of the Runelords

Due to the price tag, I have as yet, been only able to purchase 1 booster pack of the Pathfinder Battles - Rise of the Runelords set.
