I'm looking to possibly expand to 38 pages (actually 36 content pages plus covers, but whatever) for issue #2. It depends both on how many people subscribe and how much top-shelf content authors submit.

But yes, the goal is to grow, slowly, if there's enough support.

Well Wolfgang, you have my support on the money end at least. I do hope that it will be enough.

I went over to your site, Wolfgang, thinking to buy the paper (+ pdf) version of KQ. It took me to a Paypal site. I've never used Paypal, and I'm not sure I want to try. Do you not have the option to use a credit card w/out having a Paypal account?

How many pages in an issue, and how much of that is devoted to ads?

34 pages (including front and back covers). The back cover is a full page ad, but there are no other full page ads (a few half or third page ads here and there, didn't seem to be an awful lot though.)

PayPal does take credit cards without an account, as I understand it. I'll also take a check or money order, if that works better. Hit me with an email at koboldquarterly +at+ gmail and we can sort out the details.

Or you can order it at Paizo, like I did.

I liked KQ,

The derro ecology was fun, I liked the devil prince and the ink devils. The interview with Erik was good. The alternate treasure suggestions were also good.

The trip suggestions were ok from a novice perspective

I did find a few typo's but not enough of them to be disturbing.

Although the interview was good.....more derro would have been cool as well, but you can't have everything.

If this ever starts getting printed, I'll bite. Otherwise it seems silly to pay practically the same money for a PDF that I was recently paying for an actual, printed magazine.

It's in print, but the quantities are extremely modest. You get both the paper + PDF copy for one price.

I wish. Unless I'm sadly mistaken, Paizo only offers the PDF. But I'll work it out w/ W.B. over on his site.

Hmm, well I did it over at Wolfgang's site, but it turned out I did need a Paypal account for the transaction. Oh well. Another account & password to remember. Anyway, I look forward to my 1st issue.

Had to subscribe amidst all the rave reviews.

Well, I read up to the Interview with Erik yesterday, and I liked what I saw.

The Ecology of the Derro did a great job explaining their madness and their outlook on life. The gods seem to hint at the Cthulhu mythos, which is a nice idea.
The Monster Table is ok, but an explanation is needed - which books are referenced, and why are these the best monsters?
Titivillus - what I liked most is the thorough explanation of his motivations. The Ink Devils are a very nice touch. I´m not so hot for game stats, as they eat a lot of space, but they are a necessary evil (pun intended).
The ideas for non-monetary rewards are helpful, as a gold mine for ideas - exactly what I would want from a gaming magazine.
The Interview was interesting, if quite long. I like to hear what industry professionals have to say beyond the articles they write - as long as it relates to gaming.

All in all, I would rate it at 4 Stars - it is not quite perfect (Monster Table, game stats), but close. That´s my opinion, of course. I will post again when I have read the rest.

Damn. You guys weren't kidding.

KQ #1 did not disappoint.

The Inkdevils and the Scribe of Hell are awesome.

I can't wait for #2. For me, this softens the blow from losing Dragon quite a bit.

I subscribed to the PDF edition back in June. Have the subscribers' PDF copies gone out yet?

Yes, you should have the PDF version in your e-mail inbox. Wolfgang is getting the print versions printed and soon to be sent out. Am I right, Wolfgang?

Yes, the PDF versions shipped. Jonathan, I'll take a look; some copies were snagged by overaggressive spam filters, others weren't routed properly. Expect an email.

I subscribed (print and PDF) and am thoroughly enjoying the first issue. :) Additionally, Wolfgang has been both friendly and efficient to deal with via email with my questions.

The magazine's layout is nice and really clean (although the license bit is in an odd place, as has been mentioned) and I thought the editorial, FAQ and interview with Erik Mona were interesting and useful.

I liked the Far Darrig monster--enough information was laid out to give a feel for the race, so you'd get ideas for how to run one as an encounter or a PC. The one other thing I'd have liked to have seen is a bit about the inspiration behind the creature, if it is based on a real-world myth.

The introduction to Zobeck was useful, again detailed enough to be a starting point but not tied into any one setting. I'd probably set it in the Outlands for now, and look forward to reading more about it in future issues.

The only negative comment I'd have is in the Ecology of the Derro article (which I thought was very good overall): in the magic section, it mentions that many derro know some 'incantations'. Four are mentioned, but only one is known. Additionally, there's a box you can click on which just takes you down a few lines, is it meant to do something else? (Those in the Zobeck section similarly don't seem to do anything.) I'm not certain if something is missing from this section: are 'incantations' a new type of magic? The one shown doesn't say what classes the spell list is on, or explain how they are used. If this is from some non-core sourcebook I think it should have been mentioned, or if it is just a ritual to take place off-screen and not meant to be on a class spell list this could also be made clearer. After the naming of four 'incantations', I was surprised to only have one described. If it is intended for the DM to decide upon the rest, I think this should also have been mentioned. Otherwise, great article and great artwork!

More of the same please! :)

Incantations and Knowledge (Forbidden Lore) are both in Unearthed Arcana, though not all the incantations mentioned are in UA (anyone know where they're from?). A reference to UA would have been nice, as my initial reaction was the similar to Andyr's.

Edit: Good mag. :-)

Besides the digital preview, I get a HC in my mailbox and it doesn't have any of those dangerous gleemax side effects.

I liked the magazine *very* much!

As some people mentioned above, it fills very nicely the niche left open by Dragon's soon-to-be-end-of-analogue-existence.

I liked the point of view on game industry topics shown in the interview. I read a lot of editorials and message board entries of Erik's, but the interview offered some new insights not often revealed to us.

Ecologies are always neat, and this article was a worthy successor of the Dragon series.

I also appreciated that the Kobold principle seems to be "content over art".

Please keep on providing useful aids like the monster table! They are very much appreciated. The only thing I would like to see improved are the source references. As Hill Giant asked, I would like to see rule sources of articles be mentioned.

If you address KQ not only at insiders, but newbies as well, the "entry hurdle" shouldn't be too high (as in mentioning rules without mentioning their source). Even small footnotes as proposed by you, Wolfgang, would be very fine for me (especially if some of the abbreviations differ from other refence styles: e.g. "RCS" vs. "FRCS", but maybe I am just dumb).

Keep on the good work! KQ1 is a remarkable work for a first issue of a new magazine!

Liebe Grüße aus Deutschland!
Günther

P.S.
Maybe Paizo could decide to offer a KQ subscription, too? (pdf only or two media version)

Just subscribed to the PDF version (I succumbed the rave reviews as well) and I gotta say I love the idea of having a high-quality quarterly coming via email. No more cluttering up shelves with issue upon issue, that contain ads and content I might never use. This way, I can read the ezine and print off what I want to put in a binder. No offense, but do I really need to keep hardcopies of editorials and such? Read 'em and then click close the window. :) Very nice!

I totally agree. My book shelf space is limited and by now there are so many interesting publications out there... A digital subscription (preferably offered by Paizo, too) would be much appreciated here!

I had the same issue with the PDF.

I got my paper copy yesterday in the mail - the questions were far easier to separate in the print version.

Wolfgang,

I subscribed for the PDF only version after the first issue. Should I buy the first issue from Paizo or will you be sending me that one? It doesn't matter much to me either way, just let me know.

If you need details I can email you directly.

Where can I find a copy of this on paper, so I can use it. A ".pdf" doesn't do me any good. I have no home comp. Plus what use is a ".pdf" at the game table? I may want to subscribe, but only for an already printed version.

Advantage of the subscription... I can C&P stuff easily from the PDF, while spreading the kobold love with my group by letting them borrow the print.

I do wonder though... Mr Baur, do you hate gnomes?

No plans for a poster yet.

Oh, and Matthew Morris, I don't hate gnomes, exactly, but I do like to tweak them a bit. There's a player in my home campaign who is playing one although he knows that the setting is, shall we say, gnome-hostile. But he's a hero, and he's toughing out the frequent gnome-bashing so far.

You and Mike McArtor should get together for a round of gnome discussion. :)

Yes, should be early October for the PDFs. Not sure about the print edition, but in that time frame.

It's quite a bit bigger than issue number 1, and will likely hit 40 pages. Early subscribers definitely got a great deal.

First question is a discussion of why miss chance is a % and not a penalty to hit.
