My recollection of the Basic Set (Red Box) was that there was no information on any town or any type of "sandbox" experience at all. I don't know, maybe I'm misremembering, but apart from maybe an offhand reference to the town of "Threshold" I don't recall any information on the setting itself. I also recall there was only one character to play initially--a human fighter...
Ah, I was firmly ensconced in AD&D by the time Red Box came out. Basic D&D for me was with the most awesome Erol Otus cover. It had a module in it called Keep on the Borderlands and that module was basically a mini-sandbox campaign. It just detailed a whole micro setting, with a home base for the players, plus wilderness and dungeons to explore, along with some loose politics and motivations for the creatures inhabiting the area.
I'm not saying that Sandpoint needs to go that far, but it seems like it would have been better for a least a dozen pages of world building type details to play off of would have been better.

Adding another 8 or 16 pages to the book (which is the increment we'd have to add) would have been cost-prohibitive, and cutting 12 pages of something else to fit that in would be pretty much impossible. Making the BB involved a lot of difficult choices.

Will there be some sort of notice when we can re-subscribe, and avoid this as part of the subscription?
I like the product, and it looks well done, but I just don't have anyone to teach the game to right now, so I skipped it. I would like to continue that subscription though once this item is finished going out.

You can re-subscribe right now to start with Bestiary 3. Their normal product subscriptions allow you to start with the currently shipping release or the next item in queue. Since they started shipping this product, the next product became available to start a new subscription with here.

I think you can Re-Subscribe right now.
On the subscription page you can pick which item to begin your subscription with, just be sure to pick Bestiary 3.

I'm looking over the PDF and I must say CONGRATULATIONS PAIZO for another success.
Not only does this beat out other beginner boxed sets from the past 20 years, it blows them out of the water. As someone who does page design, I know that a tremendous amount of work and redrafting went into the graphics and layout work here. There is a tremendous amount of polish here and it's dripping with visual appeal.
I do have a few nitpicks, but they're nitpicks. Overall this should awe many new gamers.

Awesome! Looking forward to it. Can't wait to introduce my kids to PFRPG with this.

Hi,
I have had the boxed set on order from Amazon UK since July and I am looking forward to the delivery.
However I have just checked for an update, and I cannot find the product. Even my order goes to a "The Web address you entered is not a functioning page on our site".
Anyone else got a similar problem with Amazon UK?
Liz Courts Contributor |
Yes, I have the same issue with Amazon UK at the moment.
I'm still hopeful of getting my copy next month.
Dispatch Estimate: 8 Nov 2011
Delivery Estimate: 11 Nov 2011 - 14 Nov 2011Will the PDF version come with a PDF of the flip mat or is it just the books?
The PDF version of the Beginner Box does come with the Flip-Mat.

The beginner box will be in the category of Toys or Books?
This is important for me because i live in Brazil and the taxation for toys is very high, while taxation for books is zero.
Thanks, but i still dont know what "Games" will mean in the matter of taxation. I will buy at amazon.

I'm not sure if that will change anything, my packages from US come with the same lables regardless if they're from Amazon or Paizo.

Maybe if there's a real demand (beyond internet humor ;-) ), someone with programming skills could write a random number generator for Paizo to include with the download or otherwise make available in lieu of physical dice?

You could program that half awake with C#, or C++(without the crappy GUI crap).
I would know.I'll toss up a Dice roller class I have in C# later.

Have had an email from Amazon UK and they have a copy allocated for me from the publisher, so thats good news.
However I still cannot see the Beginner Box if you do a search in Amazon UK, so there may be a problem for anyone wanting to order one.
May be an idea if Pazio contacts Amazon to see what the problem is.

I just received my box set in the mail today and had a chance to look over it. While I do like it, I am a bit disappointed. I fall in to the category of money being really tight and I don't think this should have been automatically charged/shipped to subscription members. This should have been a side option that I could get if I wanted. I do not need this box and do not really have anyone to give it to as I only have limited time to play and my group is not looking to expand.
If I was a new player or interested in learning the game, this would be great. However, I have all the rule books that have come out (from the game subscription). So while this box set is nice and has loads of good information for the new player (not me) I feel like I just wasted $$ getting this.

Well, the fact that BBox is coming in the RPG subs was for a loooong time, and there was that "In the next week or so" e-mail, sooo.....

I understand that money may be tight for you, I truly do. But what I do not understand... is if it IS so tight.. why don't you monitor your subscription in your account to see WHAT and how MUCH you will be spending your money on coming down the line?? This way you know exactly how much and when you will be spending it on? This is not like a magazine or comic book subscription where you spend x amount of money every 6 months to a year and then it gets shipped to you once a month or bi-monthly.
As has been mentioned several times.. Paizo has mentioned this was part of the subscription for a long time (almost 3-6 months now) and that you can opt out of it for this part of the subscription and then resubscribe with no penalty or even much time wasted either.

May I suggest that Paizo move the "add to cart" button straight to the http://paizo.com/beginnerbox page? As it stands, you have to scroll down, find the beginner box buried among the "Beginner Box Products" and then click through.
Just a thought.

You could also turn it into a Christmas or birthday gift for some kids that you know. Or, even donate it to the local library. Granted, you paid for it as a subscriber, but even if you don't want it, look at it more as your contribution in giving back to the hobby by passing the boxed set on to others who might discover RPGs for their very first time.
Just my two cents,

Neither. You need to reverse the polarity of the neutron flow.

So is the Beginner's Box out yet? I don't see a release date on the website other than the October 26th one for the pdf, the following weekend is the organized play day, and my Amazon order is telling me that it'll be shipped on DECEMBER 7th.
Despite the money I saved, I don't really want to wait that long, and I figured they'd apend the date on Amazon when the game was actually released. I just checked it, and they haven't changed the date.
Could someone from Paizo contact Amazon with the corrrect date, or are you gusy just shipping off your extras to them in time for Christmas?

1. Amazon doesn't take the products directly from Paizo, they take it from the distributor (Alliance). Paizo is too small a company to deal with Amazon directly, so it has to be so...
2. Amazon is NOTORIOUSLY craptastic with RPG book releases. Shifted dates, underestimated demand, holding sales for 2 weeks because somebody e-mailed them that he's missing 2 pages in the book... Exercise in frustration.

Diamond Books distributes our items to Amazon, actually. But the concept is the same.

Hi, still think Pazio should chase this up, as there is still no sign of the "Beginner Box" if you search Amazon UK. You may miss out on sales!

It should be noted that Amazon usually makes up random release dates. As far as I can tell, if the original estimate approaches and the product is in stock, they add 2+ 1d6 weeks to the date in their system.
Whenever the stock does arrive, it will get updated and shipped out. So I would expect Amazon orders to start shipping sometime near the beginning of November.
On the other hand, Amazon is cheap because they are in no hurry to get stuff into their warehouse. They may be fast at shipping out, but they may only pick up one order a month from Alliance or Diamond. So if it wasn't available the last time they sent a truck to Diamond (say, the 20th) and they won't send a truck to Diamond until the next 20th, then it may be a while.
And before you ask, yes, Amazon sends trucks. They do not accept delivery. That's one of the ways they keep costs down.

Just wanted to say that I pre-ordered this from Amazon UK some time ago, and I can still see it in my "not dispatched" list. Oddly though, if I click on the link to go to the item itself I get an error saying the page cannot be found.
Looks to me like it was there, now it isn't. Sounds like a bug to me, as I'm sure if the item was removed I would have been alerted. Or should have...

It has not been officially released as of yet... that may be why you are getting the error or the reason why they have not dispatched it yet for ya.
Good luck :)

Oh I wasn't expected it to be dispatched, ETA is mid-November (which I believe is a bit optimistic). I was just highlighting that it *was* visible on Amazon UK and now it isn't.
