The best in the series so far - the class is genius

5/5

This pdf is 45 pages long, 1 page front cover, 1 page editorial, 1 page SRD, leaving 42 pages of content - so far the best bang-for-buck ratio in the series, so let's check this out!

After the by now obligatory introduction-page, we are introduced to the new Aegis-base-class. The Aegis gets d10, 4+Int skills per level, proficiency with simple and martial weapons, light armor and shields, up to 70 PSP, full BAB, good fort-and will-saves and up to 26 customization points. What is the Aegis? Essentially, the Aegis is a tank-class that is similar to the soulknife in that it takes psionic powers to construct something, in the Aegis' case, a custom suit of armor. The astral suit can be customized via a vast variety of customization options that include extra arms, wings, adhesive feet and similar goodies. Sounds familiar? Yeah, the closest analogy I can come up with is being a fighter who pilots his own, mindless eidolon, but without needing to play two characters. The Aegis' suit also grants improving DR, can be customized faster at higher levels etc. Sounds like a cool, balanced class? Yep, it is. Nothing to complain about. Great customization-options, versatility, iconic imagery, cool artwork.

Two psionic disciplines are introduced as per the other pdfs - this time, though, they are slightly more complex: The Maestro is an expert in astral constructs and can construct astral swarms instead (CR 7, statblock provided). The erudite-discipline offers us the options to manifest a minor amount of powers sans paying the power point cost when being focused.
The soulknife gets the gifted blade archetype, who can also manifest a limited amount of powers, 7 total of up to 4th level (this time, the power list is included in the pdf). The pdf also includes 3 new blade skills. This installment of PE also includes 28 new feats for your perusal that range from improved advanced constructs and include a massive slew of metapsionic feats that include dealing subdual damage and similar effects. From elemental effects to the ability to exclude allies from your area-effect powers, the selection is rather useful for aspiring manifesters, especially due to the inclusion of feats that let you dip into psionic powers without belonging to the psionic classes.

The new powers include the now (with the advent of rogue talents) unfortunately-named talents, which essentially are a psion's cantrips and include information on how to implement them in your game for the different classes. More interesting, knowing certain 1st level powers grant access to certain talents - a smart method of rewarding smart choices.23 powers are included, some of which overlap or are talent-versions of 1st-level powers. The classes from PU get a very detailed treatment in this installment - alternate racial traits and favored class options are included for them and favored class options for the core-races are part of the deal as well. That's not where the trait-extravaganza ends, though - psionic traits for psionically active characters and non-psions are introduced as well as psionic traits specifically designed for the PU-races. Commendable and always cool to see extensive support for new content.

In contrast to the other PE-releases so far, this one actually contains two new PrCs instead of one. The first one is the Metaforge (d10, 4+Int skills per level, full manifester progression, full BAB, medium will-save), a variant that enables access to an Aegis' suit and a soulknife - very cool psionic knight! The second is the Psicrystal Imprinter (d6, 2+Int skills per level, bad BAB, medium will-save, 9 levels of manifester-progression) on the other hand is a specialist who manages to imprint and store powers in his psicrystal. Interesting PrC with regards to crunch, but I'm a bit torn about the classes iconicity. Apart from that, nothing to complain about with these PrCs.

The pdf closes by providing 5 new psionic items, including boots that grant/improve the nomad's step ability. Neat items, nothing to complain here either.

Conclusion:
Editing and formatting are top-notch this time around, I didn't notice any glitches. Layout adheres to the 2-column standard and the artwork is mostly b/w and again, inconsistent in style - the aegis is by far the best piece of artwork herein. The pdf is fully bookmarked. Of all the pdfs from the PE-line, this one not only provides the best bang-for-buck-ratio, but also includes the best base-class in terms of design and iconicity. The Aegis is iconic and, while not subtle, very cool and something that has not been done before. The rest of the content, including the archetype, is up to the standard and no botches in design would detract from the content. Add to that the talents, traits and the very cool Metaforge-PrC and, apart from the inconsistent art-styles, I have nothing to truly complain about. Thus, I'll settle for a final verdict of 5 stars - well done.

Endzeitgeist out.

And the third release in Psionics Expanded is up!

Interesting.

I love that Blue.

What's worse than goblins? Super intelligent goblins in mind armor!

Quick question: Is the Constructor discipline the only way to get access to Astral Swarms?

Favorite graphic so far. :)

Currently, yes.

About the Extra Passenger customization. Is the character still able to take all of their actions? Are they able to see or attack characters not in the armor? Would an Aegis be able to carry a cleric in his armor and have the cleric heal and buff him as needed?

Dreamscarred Press

Tobias wrote:

Except for moving, yes - they move with the Aegis. So no 5' steps, no moving around, etc, except on the Aegis's move action.

Yes.

Never mind the cleric, carry a soulknife! Who needs magic equipment when you have a guy who makes armor carrying a guy who makes weapons? :)

Why have an extra guy when there's already a Soulknife/Aegis hybrid PrC in the book.

I haven't finished reading yet. Clearly Dreamscarred anticipated my every wish. ^.^

(I still think a series of teamwork feats to allow a single-classed aegis and soulknife duo to combine their efforts into one two-headed, four-armed juggernaut of destruction would be awesomesauce. :D )

My favorite part has got to be the feat that makes nomads step a move action. I'm currently playing a game and one of my party members is a shade. He can teleport as a move action and in combat that's soooo nice. I'm playing a psychic fist who gained access through 2 levels of nomad psion. Sure the step is only 15 ft but making it a move is so tactically pleasing. Thank you.

will these six books be combined in a print version? I love the first book (psionics unleashed)but I am a dead tree guy.

Awesome job Jeremy et all!
I knew this book was gonna be awesome, but wow.

@Mine,
I believe the guys at DSP are considering a consolidated book with Psionics Unleased and all the Expanded projects in one book.
Keep an eye out for it!

Thanks Kryzbyn, I could live with buying it again.

Actually, I think what they're doing is they're putting out a complete Psionics Expanded in softcover. The combined one will be hardcover. Personally, I'm waiting for the hardcover.

Darwyn has it correct.

Psionics Expanded will be made available in print as a soft-cover, just like Psionics Unleashed.

The two books - Psionics Unleashed and Psionics Expanded - will be combined into a single hard cover sometime in 2012. That's about the best I can give in timelines, because it's dependent on:

A) Completion of Psionics Expanded in print
B) Completion of new / additional / revised artwork for some of the Psionics Unleashed art
C) Completion of layout by a professional layout freelancer

The hard cover is likely to be around 400 pages in size.

What will the combined edition be called?

We're not sure yet.

Aside from recognizing that we'll be doing it, and a rough outline of what we'll be doing for it, we haven't put in a lot of time into the project, as getting Psionics Expanded completed is top priority.

Sorry! Forgot about the Psionics Expanded softcover :(
Just looking forward to having it all in one book :P

There's also the Third Dawn adventure path (From the Deeps) that is going to start soon, and the Psionic Bestiary (which I am really looking forward too), right?

By the way, what is up with the Psionic Bestiary?

Yes.

Status on those:

From the Deep adventure #1 - Uncertain Futures - is done with editing and into layout. We're expecting an October release.

Psionic Bestiary is still in editing. Editing is roughly 75% complete at this point, at which point we move to graphics and layout. We're expecting probably a November / December release.

Anyway, I think I'll get that one.

I have a couple questions about the Form Astral Suit Aegis class feature:

1) Can an Aegis form their suit type on the fly?  The way I read it is that anytime an Aegis takes the required action to form a suit it can be any one of the 3 suit types.

2) Regarding the Astral Skin Suit: unlike the other 2 types of Astral Suit (Armor, Juggernaut) the Skin suit does not mention it overriding existing armor that a character is physically wearing.  Does this mean that an Aegis could form an Astral Skin and still receive the AR bonus from worn physical armor?

Thanks

Yup! On the fly skin, armor, or juggernaut - but customizations can only be changed out by spending 8 hours.

Correct, because you gain no armor bonus from it in that form, and it instead makes it so you can't gain the benefits of a psychoactive skin.

Are there ranged options for the aegis (like armcannons and whatnot) or is there only the non-upgradable 1d8 30ft crystal?

In other words, is the Aegis a melee-only class?

Not currently, but it's something being discussed. Right now, the aegis is intended primarily as melee.

1) What is their Starting Gold?

2) What is their Starting Age?

I'm kind of surprised it's made it 2 months before that was noticed... Thanks for bringing that up!

To answer your question:

As the soulknife for both (same as Barbarian, Rogue, Sorcerer for age)

5d4 ×10 (125 gp) for starting gold.

Yep!

Just getting a chance to design an Aegis!

Dwarves make the best Aegii!

Thanks again, not just for your response, but for making such cool products! :D

Looks like I can play Samus Aran now (hopefully the hybrid doesn't come online too late.)

Hi Tobias,

I see that Jeremy already answered the question, but I got the edits from Shane "Alzrius" O'Conner and have been working on the edits/changes/clarifications that Shane made/recommended. I'm hoping to have the bulk of them fixed/re-written by tomorrow... after that Jeremy has graciously offered to finish what I haven't... I'm (unfortunately) a "retail wage slave" :P and this time of year gets hectic pretty fast, lots of longer hours and late-night shifts... (but only for another month at least).

I'm probably looking forward to this as much (if not more-so than you). It's my first freelance "gig" in the RPG design world... and it was an incredible and rewarding experience... I've learned a lot.

Cheers!

That has been possible for weeks now, thanks to the soulbow. Gives us Mega Man, too.

Or maybe a multiclass. I'd focus more on the soulbow, anyway. The weapons have always be more important than the suits. (Though, of course, the weapons are part of the suit).

Soulbow + Aegis + Metaforge = Win... although looks like we might need an errata on the Soulbow to denote that it qualifies for the Mind Blade stuff...

<-- how to get more of Kae's money!

I'm not saying Samus's Suit is not important. It's just less important than the beams, and will change/improve less often.

I disagree. If you rip the suit off of Samus and leave behind only the arm cannon, you've stripped her of almost all of her iconic abilities. And the resulting game isn't really Metroid anymore...it's Contra. Without the suit, she can't: Bomb Jump, Boost Ball, Crystal Flash, Gravity Boost, High Jump, Morph Ball, Morph Ball Bombs, Power Bomb, Power Grip, Screw Attack, Shinespark, Space Jump, Speed Booster, Spider Ball, Spring Ball, Wall Jump, or X-Ray Scope

Without the arm cannon, she can't fire beams or missiles.

I wanted to clarify one part of the Astral Suit Customization rules:

"Different astral suit forms grant different free customizations. These free customizations never count against the aegis’s total number of customization points spent on his astral suit, although customizations that have scaling costs, such as the Brawn customization, do count toward the customization point cost of subsequent selections. For example, the Astral Skin form grants the Nimble customization. Should the aegis want to select Nimble again, he would have to pay the increased cost (4) instead of the initial cost (2)."

The wording makes me wonder about this:

The astral skin has Speed (2) for free. How many customization points would it take to increase that to Speed (3)?

Thanks in advance!

Speed's cost doesn't increase with each successive selection, so each additional Speed customization only costs 1 point.

Good to know!

However, now I'm really confused. None of the customizations (including Brawn) mention "scaling costs". How can I tell which have a scaling cost?

Thanks!

Huh...

So, Hardy, Nimble, and Brawn originally had scaling costs, which is where that text came from. It was removed late in the Beta playtesting. And we didn't have any other scaling cost augments... so the text is actually rather moot at this point.

Thanks!

Well, I'm glad I was able to help you catch a minor typo! I'm really looking forward to the finished product! :D

I have some questions:
The description of the Metaforge's Crystallized Mind Blade is unclear.
Crystallized Mind Blade gives the ability to use up 1-3 power points in exchange for an equal amount of enhancement, but it does not say how long this effect lasts. My guess is minutes/Aegis class level, because that's the non-agumented duration of Metaphysical Weapon, but errata would help greatly.

Secondly, is there a way for a Metaforge to use her Astral Armor as if it was a mithral breastplate? The Soulbolt+Aegis combination is somewhat marred by the limitation of +3 Dex or +1Dex max in all shapes other than astral skin, otherwise a limitation related only with heavy armor, as plenty of archery feats require more than 16 dex, such as Manyshot and Improved Precise Shot.

Dreamscarred Press

APersonAmI:

The first one has had an official errata issued - Dreamscarred Press Errata

Quote:

Metaforge

Crystallized Mind Blade
Change the last line in the first paragraph to read:
"In addition as a swift action, the weapon can be charged with 1 power point, increasing its enhancement bonus by 1 for one round."
All subsequent increases also only last for one round.

The second one will be in release #5 - Master the Battle - which will include psionic items to enhance / modify Astral Armor, Mind Armor, Mind Blades, Mind Bolts, Mind Shields, etc.

Thanks!

Really looking forward to Master the Battle, then!

Reviewed here, on DTRPG and sent to GMS magazine. Cheers!

Thanks, End!

I definitely appreciate all the feedback so we can get things in for the final compilation - we want the print run to be as perfect as possible!
