The Slumbering Tsar Saga
The Sleeper Awakes!
At last, after languishing in its crypt for an age, the secrets of the slumbering city of Tsar burst forth in all their macabre glory. Poured forth from the eldritch furnaces and crucibles of the Necromancer and Orcus himself comes Frog God Games bringing you at long last The Slumbering Tsar Saga.
Something Stirs in the City of Evil
Over the distant northern hills, beyond The Camp, and past the Desolation stand the pitted walls of Tsar. A hundred armies have crushed themselves against this bulwark in futile attempts to breach the city. Even the combined might of the Heavens and Earth were unable to break through in the final battle of Tsar. So why was the city suddenly abandoned on the verge of victory, and what waits for those foolish enough to enter the Temple-City of Orcus?
The Black Gates Await
Only the bravest and most powerful of heroes dare the depths of the Desolation and live to tell of it. But what happens when they penetrate that blasted landscape and look upon the gates of the very center of evil on the earth. Can even heroes of such renown breach the Walls of Death and live?
The Slumbering Tsar Saga began its journey years ago as a single mega-adventure for the masters of Third Edition rules and First Edition feel, then became a trilogy of adventures, then a trilogy of mega-adventures, and now finally comes to you as a monthly series culminating in a massive book with over a half million words of pure First Edition-style adventure. Updated to the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game to accommodate today’s audience of the classic fantasy roleplaying game, The Slumbering Tsar Saga brings you 14 chapters, released monthly in electronic format, each chapter the size of a full adventure in its own right (30–50 pages). Then when the final chapter has been released, the whole will be available in a classic edition, hardcover adventure book.
After the first round one was unconscious and I could see that it was quickly going to get worse. before the next turn I told them that these creatures strength is to make full attacks and if you can deny them that then they are not very tough. One player yelled "We can't cast slow yet!" I smiled and said let them get their AOO and move making sure you are at least ten feet away from any gargoyle. After that they were able to turn the tables and beat the five down I sent after them with one flying North at the end.
They all survived and gathered the "bits" of treasure they had. These should be fun later.
To start off with one of my players didn't want to start at level 7th so I am running Rappan Athuk for their 3rd level party so I can give them some background on the end of the battle.
Since I am using Rappan Athuk as the jumping off point for the Slumber Tsar Saga I created a link for the two. Since the sunken graveyard was the burial place of the Army of Light I made a sketch for one of the hallways.
Hooks for Slumber Tsar on the wall:
I tried to make this quickly, so it is rough. There are a few bits and pieces from the desolation stories in the drawing. I would make a PC succeed at knowledge checks to identify the keyed parts. Remember I am putting this in Golarion on the boarder of Cheliax, Nedal, and Molthune. I have a Dwarf Inquisitor, a Half-Orc Barbarian from the Mindspin Mountains, as well as the desolation stuff. Trying to mix them together and hope I can keep it all straight. Trying not to show Irori involved because the Tsar was once an Irori Monastery. Some of Irori's followers has been hiding this fact for a thousand years.
Thanks Laric for the awesome review of the Slumbering Tsar series to date!
Note: this review does not merely discuss the first installment but all of the parts available to date. It contains a few spoilers for the Desolation, the City of the Slumbering Tsar and the Hidden Citadel.
Slumbering Tsar: The Hidden Citadel, Part 2 Echoes of Despair is available for subscribers already and will be available soon here at Paizo as well.
I am sure this entire series would sell better if the who series of adventures was numbered better..first time i looked at Slumbering Tsar I was confused by it as I couldn't even tell if "The Desolation", "Temple-City of Orcus" and "The Hidden Citadel" were even of the same campaign path...and I avoided it because of that..and eventually I found something else to run. If they had simply been numbered from 1 to 14 (or however many parts there are) this would have cleared things up immensely. Such little things could have made it easier to sell, in my opinion anyways.
The books are numbered both as to what overall place they appear in sequence and in what order of the three overall parts of the campaign they appear. So, for example, Slumbering Tsar 1 is also in The Desolation Part 1 and is listed above like so: Slumbering Tsar 1: The Desolation, Part 1 - The Edge of Oblivion.
The Desolation has three parts. The Temple-City of Orcus is next and has five parts. The Hidden Citadel is last and has 6 parts.
Does the Premium subscription offered on your site include the PDF's?
It doesn't specifically state it but then the PDF only subscription is $89.99 as opposed to the $125 for the Hard Cover Subscription...
Thanks for your time.
The Full Premium subscription of the hardcover book ($125) of the Slumbering Tsar Saga includes free pdfs of each portion of the campaign as they become available. Shipping of the hard cover book will be a separate charge when it does become available sometime next year. Bill and Greg have not yet determined what that charge will be.
At present the free pdf downloads include all three parts of The Desolation, all five parts of the Temple-City of Orcus, and the first two of the six parts of The Hidden Citadel. When the rest of The Hidden Citadel becomes available, the pdfs of those portions will also reside in subscribers' available downloads.
Obviously the $89.99 price for the download subscription only would not include the hardcover book; nor will purchasers of the download only version need to be concerned with additional shipping costs.
I bought this PDF last saturday. So far so good. Being that it's for a level 7 start, I have a humble query or two for anyone of the Frog God folks...
I vaguely remember something mentioned about plans for Crucible of Freya or Tomb of Abysthor or both. Or I'm on glue. :/
Any chance for more information about this?
This would be a dreamy possible prequel to Slumbering Tsar, perhaps even ending with Rappan Athuk as a supercampaign along the lines of the old GDQ series. I got a tad curious when I read the beginning of this volume and the mention of Bard's Gate, etc.

Good question, Sunderstone. Nothing is set in stone yet, but we have kicked around the idea of updating Crucible of Freya, Tomb of Abysthor, and Bard's Gate (which is a huge stat block hog, so would take some doing). We've got to see how Rappan Athuk and all does, but those are absolutely on the table as possibilites that we would like to do along with a few others.
We are committed to bringing new stuff from FGG, but if there is a demand for an update of the classics we are taking that very seriously too.
Thanks for the info Chuck and Greg.
I'm in for Tsar and RA (at least in PDF form atm possibly HC if I can). While I have never bought or played through RA in the past, running CoF (and its web enhancements) into VoLK was one of my old gang's favorite experiences in 3E. I hope these classics are in demand.
Tsar 1 has rekindled some of the old Necro flame in me, I'll buy the complete work as a PDF and possibly the HC if that is available (I didnt preorder). I'm looking forward to seeing more of the new Frog stuff as well as the old.
Also, apologies are in order for several months back when I believed there was a possibility Tsar wouldnt be completed based on Necro's end days of missed products, etc. Sorry about that. :)
I'm glad to see Frog God with a good number of products coming. I'll keep reading.

No problem, Sunderstone. Glad we proved you wrong!

I think that we're still looking into what kind of demand there is out there for translating more of the older stuff to Pathfinder.
At the same time we have a strong desire to produce more fresh, new material of the same quality for everyone to enjoy. :)
I'll pass the question along, though, Sunderstone.
Actually, I am glad you are taking the time to update the older products (ToH, Tsar and now Rappan Athuk) for Pathfinder. I never exposed myself to any of these when they first came out, so this is all new to me. I have a copy of the Limited and Unlimited versions of the ToHC on my shelf. My DM as a copy as well, and he absolutely loves the book (and has already used it). I am also already in for TSAR(subscription) and plan on preordering RA.
I am always open and eager to see new product, but keep it coming with updating the classics, also!
After reading this PDF cover to cover, I just wanted to mention a huge potential pitfall for future GMs (more so if you are running this as a one shot with new characters beginning at lvl 7).
Spoiler:
Event 2: The Bender Brothers. This event is very heavy handed and is likely to happen on the first night of playing.
1) Imagine yourself as one of your players, you have this great concept for a neat lvl 7 character. You go through a semi-lengthy creation process, get psyched to play, etc.... only to have your character potentially get one-shotted (in a less than glamorous way I might add) before you even get into the Desolation or the adventure proper. ........Ouch.
2)The second issue with this event is killing these Gnomes. The consequences are steep. The party is Forced to either leave a character behind to run the inn, or hire someone to run it for them losing 20 bits per week (if memory serves). If they refuse, they are out, plain and simple. No using the town to rest and resupply, etc.
I definately recommend using these Gnomes as pesky thieves instead, stealing things every so often which will avoid the first pitfall for sure and possibly the second, if the party doesnt catch and kill them for stealing.
Other than what I spoiler'ed, I like the Edge of Oblivion. The Camp definately has it's own flavor and a very unique cast of NPCs. The Desolation seems like a very interesting locale, I need to read more. :)
I am working on putting together a PbP based on Tomb of Abysthor, Pathfinderized. Greg did a great job of grounding the Slumbering Tsar in the old Necromancer Games world. I've read the first three installments and enjoyed finding bits of history to tie into my ToA adventure.
And it's also presented some challenges. For example, how did Alaric end up in ToA? I'm learning towards he got home too late, salvaged a piece of the altar and returned after the Army of Light had disappeared. He continued serving Aroden (replaces Muir and Thyr) and was buried in the tombs. Though that would make HIM the Last Justicar...
And THANK YOU! for including the Justicar Class in #2. With the supporting materials links dead on the Necromancer website, it was great to find this again.
Kudos to Frog God for carrying on the Necromancer spirit.
