Anybody know where to get cardstock cheapest? I'll typically use rewards bucks at Staples, but are there any better deals out there?
That might be your best bet - I've had a ream of cardstock for years that I'm just now starting to go through. You could also check your local CostCo/Sam's Warehouse/etc. to see if they have any deals.

If I may, I use the "cheapest" 8x11 photo-paper I can find and it works like a charm.
@ Callous Jack:
Thank you I've got it just in time for the big finally fight.
And might I ask: Who is that as the Lamias' faces ? Come on, you can tell us, we can keep it to ourselves! ;)

I just downloaded this one and I have to say it again: These are really great. And just so it can be said, because I'm not sure if everyone knows this or not, you can use these minis for things other than the published adventure. The Ogres, Ettins, and various Giants are really great looking, and there is a nice collection of adventurers and creatures, especially if you get a bunch of different pdf's. Great job guys. I'm so glad that the paper mini line up is getting attention again.
Keep it up.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Mike! I appreciate it. As always, if anyone wants to do a review, I would appreciate it.

Hey Slime!
I hope you like the minis, I'm sorry you only get to use them for the final fight. As for the lamias... a gentleman never tells. (...)
Well then say no more, say no more, nod, nod, blink, blink! ;)
The gang will enjoy the minis for one more game since they didn't finish the fight in the last game and it was a VERY severly backed-up "Muck": We had a total of eight of the figs on the map, currently down to three.

Greetings, fellow travellers.
I am just wondering whether these minis are tokens to be put flat on the battle grid - this is indicated by the sneak peeks posted by you, Callous Jack (which look great!) - or whether they are to be mounted on a base and stand upright (like the ones from the Kingmaker AP).
Thanks for answering.

These are paper stand-ups. The idea is that you cut out the minis, fold them over, and glue them to a circular paper base. They are still flat, of course, but they do stand upright.
You can take a look at these pictures of the minis from the previous set in action, or download the free instructions PDF to get a better idea how they work.

Hi RuyanVe! Tamago pretty much nailed it, they are just like the Kingmaker minis. Feel free to ask any other questions.

For portability & playability, what I do is, skip the gluing to the paper base step. I carry the minis in a ziploc bag folded flat with the base folds scored. So semi-circle flaps hanging down from each mini...
At the table, as they're needed, I fold open the bases and blu-tak them to pennies. This adds weight in the base and makes it less prone to blowin'-in-the-wind. Sometimes they wont stay down when tipped over, which can sometimes be a buzz-kill (kill-buzz-kill?) but the weight of the coin keeps the minis where you put them, especially the smaller ones. Could be that our group is particularly windy :D ...
When the day is done, the pennies go back in the jar, the blu-tak into the plastic film can (remember those?) and the minis go back in the bag...
That's my PPM hack, it's working for me so far, your mileage may vary, objects in mirror are closer than they appear...

Thanks again for the pics, gigglestick. Do you have any favorites in the sets?
Well, I haven't gotten a chance to use them yet.
But just looking at them, I think the giants have so many uses and they are obviously STONE Giants (as opposed to bald grey guys) that they'll get some fun play when I get back to tabletop gaming.
And of course, the Sh. Demon from SOTS is too cool for words.
The succubi have their uses in other games (natch) and in your earlier sets, the wizardess with the cat familiar in your ROTR set did get some screen time...where she was referred to as "the hot chick wizard" based on your mini. (Even better...the players LET HER GO after capturing her, making her "promise" not to do anymore evil. Guess who showed up in SSM?)
And I LOVE the goblin harem girls...(be interesting to see what you could do with the kobold queen in COTKB)
I'll admit, the trolls didn't excite me as much, but Pathfinder's Trolls, with the goofy looking jaw, are tough to make fearsome. For Trolls, I like the slightly more "dangerous and bulky" Crystal did with her KM set. But PF Trolls (and Bugbears) don't have the right look for me anymore...
The one thing I would like to see in future sets though, a bit more variety among the repeat figures. Like the warriors of Wrath or the Dwarf prisoners. Even giving a different colored shirt or a weapon swap or longer hair or an extra belt or cloak would make each individual model just that...individual.
Then again, I'm no artist...even my stick figures look bad, so all of the good work you have done is great. And the fact that you did paper minis for EVERYONE...ever cooler.
and they look good alongside the other PF minis sets and other paper mini sets.
Callous Jack |
Hey gigglestick,
The Stone Giants were a lot of fun to do, I'm glad you like them. Just wait until you see the next set of giants which include Storm, Cloud and Rune Giants. I'm very happy with the way they came out. I will talk to Liz about maybe posting some early teasers...
That's a great story about Lyrie, what ended up happening?
I'm not a big fan of the PF troll either. The lower jaw and tusks seem too bizarre for me. Although I did like how Florian Stitz drew it in the blog a few days ago...
Thank you very much for the feedback on the common or 'repeat' figures. It's very helpful to know what people would like to see changed along with what they love about the sets. I have toyed with making each one more unique but I wasn't sure if anyone would care (because of the size). At the very least, I will change the hair, skin and clothing color to separate them in the future. When possible, I will try to switch out weapons or add a piece of gear too.
gigglestick |
Well, as someone with boxes of paper minis, you'd be suprised what people will choose for their characters. I've had that happen where I plan an adventure, with all of the paper minis decided upon, and then the new guy decides that the mini you've picked for the BBEG looks JUST like what he wants to play.
And sometimes, a single "flunkie" with the right weapon fits someone's idea to a "t". and sometimes, people loot enemy gear for their own appearance. If you've seen Into The Haunted Forest, there is an elven girl at the end with a full illustration. (One fo the Bad Guys).
I used ITHF as a prequel to ROTR and the party ranger (male human) took her dress and began wearing it himself...
The ROTR group was interesting...
So, I could see someone taking one of the Warriors or Wrath or Dwarf Prisoners as their character.
I also noticed that you made each of the Succubi-kin in SOTS individual. (I see Tieflings....)
Keep up the good work.
(Oh, and if you ever get the inkling, ITHF and Hollow's Last Hope would make for a nice set of minis too...)
Callous Jack |
Interesting, thanks for the info. I'd be interested to hear if any paper minis did get picked for use as a PC.
And I'm sure ITHF and Hollow's Last Hope are on Liz's master list somewhere (although she won't tell you that and she'd have to kill you if she did). ;-)
So I have to ask again: what happened with Lyrie?
gigglestick |
This is a long story...
First of all, the party was not always good at the teamwork thing. We had between 3 and 6 players and they picked up 3 NPCs (Barbarian, Hedge Witch, and Goblin Monk...Goryll, Estle, and Greenteeth in the photobucket pictures). Only 2 of the players had experience with RPGs, the others had only played DD4e and WOW, so they had no real RP experience.
So, when they firest encounter Lyrie (the Thistletop Ambush 1 pictures) she sent the cat for reinforcements... The Male Ranger/Rogue (same person who was wearing the Dress from ITHF) took off by himself (against the Diviner's objections) to catch the "cute kitty." Trying to use Animal Handling.
Instead of catching the kitty, he ran into Bruthalmus and some goblins (Thistletop Ambush 2 pictures). He nearly died by the time the party caught up with him. But they took Lyrie prisoner (pictures of her in the prison cells) and then, against the Diviner's objections, let her go with a promise to hunt her down and kill her if she did evil again.
Flash forward to Magnimar and she was with the Judge, having already warned him about the party and having leveled up. They had plenty of time to prep and when half the party entered the room (DON'T SPLIT THE PARTY) against the Diviner's objections, she'd already buffed up the familiar with Enlarge, Bull STR and Cat's Grace from scrolls. She knew this was an all or nothing for her.
Some memorable quotes when the heroes saw her again.
"Oh $#!+" -player of the now dead dress wearing rogue, now playing a halfling ranger.
"Told you so" - Elf Diviner
By the time the rest of the party showed up, the bad guys were winning, but with the whole party there, the heroes won. They sort of let the Judge go (not really, another long story) and executed Lyrie and her cat on the spot as a warning to the Judge and to keep their promise to her...
Then they went off to face Xanesha...
gigglestick |
Well, they were terrified of meeting Xanesha. They didn;t know her name or the particulars, but there are enough rumors flying around the web that they knew that the final battle in SSM was a notorious TPK. And they knew I had to buff her up to handle 6-8 characters...
When they finally got to her, only the Cleric, Ranger, Diviner, Barbarian, and Witch were there (Paladin was out for a few weeks and the Rogue had died...again...messing with the locals on the docks and the Goblin was studying with the temple of Sarenrae along with the Paladin). But, several had Fly spells cast on them. And then, opening round, Barbarian wins initiative and gets a critical hit on his first strike (That's (1d12+17) *3) though she turned the Diviner to stone on the same turn.
Second Turn, the Barbarian Crits AGAIN on the summoned creature (I forget which one, but between him and the Cleric, they killed it). Xanesha, meanwhile, critical fumbles and drops the spear, over the edge of the tower.
8 turns and 1 more hero crit and one more Xanesha Fumble, and the Diviner gets free of the petrification. On turn 12 EVERYONE on the hero side hit, one of them (I think it was the Ranger) critted.
Xanesha went down hard.
They stripped off all the equipment, chopped her into bits, and then burnt the bits and scattered the separate piles of ashes in several places in the city and into the bay...
They were beat up, but they survived.
And that's where the campaign ended, because the game store shut down and I had to go out of town for a few months....
gigglestick |
Geez, chopped her up and burned the bits? A wee bit paranoid, maybe? ;-)
Wait, so you never played past the 2nd book! For some reason, I thought you finished the campaign.
Nope, though I'm plying in it right now and we're in Misgivings (and yes, GM knows I Gm'd ROTR if anything).
But I've read each of the modules at least three times (so that GMing the earlier bits I'd remember what was coming up).
In reality, I'm not sure the party would survive past HMM. Only the Barbarian, Paladin, Diviner, and Witch (two of them NPCs) have been around sinc ethe first adventure. There were so many character deaths for a while and a lot of costly reincarnations that while some of the party has decent loot, most of the others are short on EPL magic.
There was a bit of trouble for a while with party tactics (the rogue would always try to sneak attack every turn, to the point of leaving other party members, or himself, exposed. Lots of "I want this" magic item grabbing which left some characters lacking the magic they should have had. While there was an experienced player (Diviner) who often had good tactics, some of the other players' impusiveness led to some rough battles and a lot of party magic consumption. And things like using Cure Moderate Wounds to heal someone of 4 HP damage...)
They had a good learning curve, if they had enough time to survive, but they didn't always know when to run. (this is a party that attacked the Sandpoint Devil while only levels 2-3) But I'm afraid that against the Ogres, it would take too long for them to learn how to work cohesively. Or I could be wrong. They might pick it up right off the bat.
Don't get me wrong, we had a ball and they did a LOT of non-combat roleplaying, which is how they were able to keep up with the level advancement despite the slow advancment chart. And they got into character well: one player kept a journal of his experiences and feeligngs while another wrote a few poems commemmorating some of the sillier encounters. And the paladin had to be kept away from ledges...
But, I also run a periodic PF game for a different group (the Halfogre/sorceress/cleric of Shelyn/gnome/kobold group) that is a mis-mosh of PFS scenarios, homebrew adventures, and the Absalom/Falcon's Hollow plots. Some of the monsters (like your ogres, shocker lizards, and troll) from these sets have already shown up. And I've used a few "transplanted" ROTR encounters and other AP stuff for that game. (For example, they are playing in a modified Trial of the Beast scenario set in the River Kingdoms).
And of course, I plan to run ROTR again once I move, so there should be some great paper mini goodness going on then too...
And they're not being paranoid...you just read what happened when they left a loose end (Lyrie)...
The Diviner was nothing if not thorough...
Callous Jack |
Sounds like you had a fun group even if they weren't doing well on party tactics. It's too bad you didn't get a chance to go further with them. The Ogres may have gutted them but they did make it by Xenesha so you never know...
It would have been funny to see that group burning up every dead BBG they took down because of Lyrie.
I'll be interested to hear how it goes when you do the adventure again (especially since you'll have all the minis by then!).

Well, when I play, we tend to burn bodies after the kill. Whenever we can. Most of the time we even wait until they're completely dead.
After almost 3 decades of gaming, you learn not to let badguys live. Ever. Either they convert, or they get killed.
(Though at least, because I'm the GM, they don't set fire to the actual minis anymore...my very first Rolemaster Game had my mini aflame...but thats a story for another time)
One of the things I enjoy about the Pf Paper minis is that you guys get the proportions correct. After using metals, plastics, and quite a few paper minis from other companies, it was annoying to have a fighter who was as big as one of the trolls, or halflings and kobolds who look 5' tall.
And of course, there's the fact that you now have a mini for EVERY major encounter, so those of us running these online can use a mini pic to show what the baddies look like with just a simple print screen/crop/save...

I know what you mean, I have a bunch of old Mageknight figures that aren't very useful because of the size problems.
And I didn't know folks would use them for online purposes!
I'm glad to hear it.

Wow, awesome pics! I love the picture with the Deathweb, I hope the PCs were scared by it being placed on the map.
And what is that weird dice in the Redcap photo?
They weren't too scared; my party is way too genre-savvy for that. As soon as I started describing the room, their first thought was, "Oh, great! We're going to fight giant spiders now, aren't we?" Of course, they didn't realize quite *how* giant. . .
Funny tangent, by the way: my players were cracking so many Shelob jokes during the session that I ended up replacing the standard treasure from the encounter with two dead Halflings, one of whom was wearing a Ring of Invisibility. ;-)
The die in the Redcap photo is our party's Druid. It's a normal D20, but my player bought a pack of stickers with various emotions, so she could turn the die to match her character's expression! In the picture, she's sad, because she just missed one on her turn.

I have used plastic minis for my games for the last few years, but saw how many larger than Large creatures were coming up with no appropriate substitute, so I decided to give the paper minis a try. This is the first volume I've run with just the paper minis, and I'm quite pleased with the way things are going.
There is a painter among my players, so the party all have individualized metal minis, but face the paper foes. So far, the switch has satisfied my players... they quite like the artwork, and seem to enjoy revealing their foes' names when they knock them down. The cattle rustlers were particularly popular. I'm expecting them to face the Deathwebs next session :D
One small quibble (tho maybe I should have double-checked before posting): I think there are a few mis-sized minis, namely the mammoths and the frost giant. Not a big problem, as I just use one of the proper size circles as a template to make a base for the mini.
Keep up the good work!
Callous Jack |
Thank you so much for the feedback, Scribbling Rambler. Paper minis are a ton of work so I'm always glad to hear that gamers are enjoying their use. I hope you get a good reaction from the Deathwebs!
As for mini sizes, I know I there have been a few issues with that. I definitely will fix them as people point them out. I will check on the Frost Giant and Mammoths. Please let me know if you notice any others. Thanks for the heads up!

Hi Scribbling Rambler,
I checked and the Mammoth are Large and should be Huge but the Frost Giant is correct. I know this was corrected before, perhaps you have the older download?
Hmmm.. perhaps. I downloaded at the end of September.
My frost giant base is Huge, but should be Large. Lokansir is also mis-sized, but the other way.
Like I said, I just adjust the bases as needed. Thanks for the quick response, Jack!!

*sprinkles some water to keep things from flaring up*
Seriously, though, these are very nice. My RotRL has been on hiatus due to a couple of the players on honeymoon (Seriously, they'd rather go on a fancy cruise together than game with me? What gives?! ;-). But I'm eager to get back to the game and see what they think of the Conna mini :-)
