More Options ! more magic, ... MORE !

5/5

flavorful options, powerful options
classes, archetypes, feats...

while 100% of the boook might not please you, you want this book.

having the choice to build flavorful PC with the right options is priceless (and for this book, you have...)

ultimate magic, rrrrright!!

this book owes its selling rate for the Magus.

lazy feats, some options are good, some others just dotn´
Archetypes: the best Bladebound Magus
worst of all: Trapper Ranger

Spellblights: interesting but too complex for a fumble system
Spellword Casting: at the beginning it looks very nice, then i read it and... is the same spell restriction and opportunities at a expensive cost of time

feats: ok those are feats

Magic spellbooks: why you dont just paraphrase some words concerning about how to protect the spellbooks with some spells and thats all. maybe a feat or two for scaling this option, besides the spellbooks looks greats.

spells: again, the magus options are great.

my advice for you: buy the book, cut the pages concerned for magus, and dump the rest or Download the pdf at any place you can, print the magus and drop the rest

2/5

While I do not think that either this or Ultimate Combat deserve to be called "Ultimate" anything books (maybe Ultimate Monk), I do think that Ultimate Magic does better cover it's proported theme. In my opinion, Inner Sea Magic did a better job overall, but is sadly setting specific.

On th Divine Side (minus Paladin) this book is extremely, extremely limited. There are a few gems, but most are either placed really far out of reach, or just not worth what you give up for them, and might as well not have been there at all rather than tease.

On the Arcane side, this book is full of material, but severely lacking as well. There is an assortment of random material that just seems like it was left over from other books and tossed in here. The only magical items in this book (exceptionally noticable on the Divine Magic side) are Wizard's Spellbooks, (which of the top of my head, only 3 Classes in the entire game will actually have any use for beyond the sell price).

There are a lot of (would be) nice Feats, except they are specific to a Class, or build, or whose names imply it would be great for somone else besides who it is actually intended. Over all, there are a lot of options, but actually very slim pickings. Overall, it leaves a lot of classes and build out in the cold.

Whereas Ultimate Combat is at best Ultimate Monk, Ultimate Magic is closest to being more appropriate as Ultimate Wizard/Inquisitor, (arguably Classes that did not need more).

mediocre at best

3/5

This book is no Complete Divine or Complete Arcance. I mostl play a cleric and this book does little for me personally.

Yeah, its got some interesting tweaks, but for the price, i dobn't think thy are worth it.

So far I've used 1 feat and the spells from this book. Nothing else. Should've bought the APG.

A good product to add to your collection!

5/5

After reading through Ultimate Magic, some new mechanics offered in this book can add flavor and fun to an adventure.

The Magus appears to be a class that is fun to play as. You are able to swipe at your enemies with your sword in one hand and with magic in the other.

Spellblights are interesting. These curses can hinder the spellcasters in different ways.

One chapter that I especially liked was the words of power. The concept was a little hard to wrap around but when you understand it fun ensues. I tried out a couple of words of power in an adventure and it was pretty fun. There was a point where I fought a spellcaster who also had words of power and it felt like the two were having a very destructive debate ha!

Overall I enjoyed this product and I recommend this to everybody!

Can the qinggong monk archetype be combined with any of the APG archetypes?

1) Not sure, short of looking at all the other archetypes I wouldn't know.

I guess a better question would be, "What abilities does he lose from the base monk class to take on the qinggong archetype?"

Thanks for taking time to answer, Dark Mistress.

slow fall

high jump
wholeness of body
diamond body
abundant step
diamond soul
quivering palm
timeless body
tongue of the sun and moon
empty body
perfect self
So, it doesn't look it can work with the other archetypes. Oh well.

From what I'm reading... it looks like it'll be totally compatible with other archetypes.

The reason is that you get to pick and choose IF and WHAT ki powers you are substituting.

So if you are using an archetype that already subs diamond soul for something else, for example... then you should be ok just as long as you don't choose some other ki power instead.

Honestly, I wish they made all archetypes like this... where you could pick and choose which class features you wanted to swap, instead of it often being all or nothing.

Still, it's easy enough to house rule... though it's not PFS legal. *shrug*

I second what Chris Gunter said. Thanks for all the tempting bits you've revealed to us, Dark_Mistress! Er, from the book, I mean.

What is the one sorcerer only feat called?

The monk archtype can switch whatever he wants, wow I wish they had options like that for other archtypes and Sorcerer bloodlines.

Are there any feats/options that give you more options/uses for Cleric/Sorcerer/wizard 3+int/wis/cha/day abilities?

I'm having my back beaten so that you shall have a softer surface to place your eloquent feet, my Dark_Mistress.

And what the heck, I DO have a question. You said that there are two sorcerer archetypes that both allow for "combo-bloodlines". What are the two archetypes actually called? (I'm sure this info was released about a month ago... but I just don't feel like looking for it.)

They are crossblooded and wild blooded archtypes for the Sorcerer.

Sorcerous Bloodstrike - if you reduce a target to zero or fewer hp you can regain a bloodline power. Thats the only one that fits what your second question was really, that I seen. But I only skimmed the list.

There is some feats for channeling, one for extra cantrips. I quick glance doesn't show one for the other abilities.

Well I have skimmed the spells only so far. But yes a few looked cool.

1) Yes a couple
2) A couple
3) Honestly not sure
4) I would say yes since they added more elemental schools.
5) Don't know.
6) Depends on what you consider teleport and low level. There is a shadow step spell. It is what it sounded like or those who know Vampire the Masquerade lasombra would guess.
7) Not sure about fey but monstrous yes.
8) yes
9) again not sure.
10) A couple and one oracle only spell that I seen.

After making some calculations how much the book + free PDF + shipping will cost me compared to getting it from Amazon, I re-suscribed to get the PDF sooner, because the final tally at Paizo seems to be the same as getting the hardcover cheap without shipping from Amazon.

Now I want my PDF! Do I need to get the Nerdrage Ooze in here? :p

Not to stir up trouble, but I have no idea whether a new subscription now gets you into the processing of the initial subscriber batch, or whether you will only be handled afterward.

Oh Great and Powerful Dark Mistress, what kind of cheesy goodness can wizards expect out of this in terms of feats and abilities directly linked to the class (from what I understand, they can trade the bonus feats for specific powers); is there an option to replace the familiar/arcane bound item for something else? Are there any feats that improve summoning spells further?

Thanks a lot for your time.

Looking forward for the Words of Power magic system. I recently re-read the Iron Heroes mana/spell methods system, and the modularity of it made me salivate. :D

Arcane Discoveries which was mentioned in a blog already. 2 new elemental schools, and one new archetype for wizards. Plus a bucket load of spells of course.

Looks like they give up familiar and they are bond to a single blade. Among the other powers the blade they are bound to gets more powerful. Plus unlike a familiar it is less master/servant relationship and more of a partnership between the Magus and the black blade.

I want to start out by thanking everyone who has posted answers to questions thus far (especially Dark Mistress).

I'm looking forward to downloading my copy of the PDF on May 18th but I am playing in a game this Saturday where I am playing a 4th level Red Dragon Bloodline Sorcerer using the Words of Power system from the playtest.

1) I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there have been any major changes to the system since the playtest?
2) Overall do the words cover the same broad spectrum of normal spell casting?
3) Any equivalent spells to vanish or shield?
4) Any meta words to extend duration of spells?
5) Any changes to the word burning feat?
6) How did they resolve the conflict in rules from the playtest as to how the duration of multiple effects are tracked?
7) Did they make it so Detect Magic can now be used as a 0-level instead of 1st level spell?

Thanks for any answers anyone feels like giving...

I've seen many come to light from other people.
On todays blog we'll see feats.

... Oh please let there be a 4thED like multiclassing feat ( gain class feature of another class for one level at the cost of a feat)

Not really a magus seems to be able to gain a familiar as one of his arcana choices.

Black blade gives up his 3rd lvl arcana choice and can never have a familiar even if he takes levels in a class that normally grants one.
