Chapter 3: "The City of Seven Spears"
by James Jacobs, Kevin Kulp, and Rob McCreary

The legendary lost city of Saventh-Yhi, known to some as the City of Seven Spears, has finally been found! Yet while the ancient city's mysteries have long remained hidden, all manner of man-eating beasts and plants still dwell within the vine-choked ruins. Can the PCs be the first among five competing factions to claim the rights of discovery? Or will they become but the latest of Saventh-Yhi's victims?

This volume of Pathfinder Adventure Path includes:
  • "City of Seven Spears," a Pathfinder RPG adventure for 7th-level characters, by James Jacobs, Kevin Kulp, and Rob McCreary, including an extensive appendix of magic items designed by Owen K.C. Stephens.
  • A detailed look at the members of the five factions exploring the city, by James Jacobs and Rob McCreary.
  • New powers and magic items from the sinister mystical tradition of juju, by Mike Shel.
  • Deadly lion riders in the Pathfinder's Journal, by Robin D. Laws.
  • Nine new monsters, by Jesse Benner, Patrick Renie, and Neil Spicer.

Pathfinder Adventure Path is Paizo Publishing's monthly 96-page, perfect-bound, full-color softcover book printed on high-quality paper. It contains an in-depth Adventure Path scenario, stats for about a half-dozen new monsters, and several support articles meant to give Game Masters additional material to expand their campaign. Pathfinder Adventure Path volumes use the Open Game License and work with both the Pathfinder RPG and the standard 3.5 fantasy RPG rules set.

So, who's Kevin Kulp?

+1 to Leafman's questions.

I think he's PirateCat, a moderator on ENWorld...if that helps at all.

Correct. Also happens to be a pretty damn good adventure writer.

Andoran

PirateCat has the Best story hour thread at ENworld - really looking forward to this one. And he also wrote a few other highly acclaimed adventures as far as I remember :-)

So, will the whole AP be a race/contest against other groups?

Piratecat, my old friend! Excellent news!

For anyone who is not familiar with Mr. Kulp's adventure writing chops, I direct you to Fiery Dragon's psionic themed module Of Sound Mind; great stuff!

Nope. Parts of the AP will be, but not the entire AP. But the element of "be the first to discover and explore the legendary lost city of Saventh-Yhi" is going to be one of the AP's central themes.

This one's going to be VERY inspired by Indiana Jones AND by the old 1st edition module "Dwellers of the Forbidden City."

This and several other works have done a lot to impress us with Dr. Kulp, so we're very excited to have him along on this AP. He's already dived right in with the deviousness and aplomb we expect from our best, so expect something pretty exciting later this year!

Once again you're totally incoherent. It must be some sort of fungus growing on your roots or something.

You'll laugh, Dave; someone has just commissioned me to write OSM2... for OD&D! I'll bet you can guess who. :D

I'm tremendously excited to be writing this. I have a huge love for jungle adventures, and this one plays to a lot of my strengths. You'll have to decide for yourself how well I do.

You're absolutely correct -- I should not bother myself with issues of lesser beings. What can I say? I'm obviously a caring soul, right?

However, I have to point out that once again you're derailing a thread; shame on you, Mairkurion! ;P

Cheliax

This is brilliant news. My list of 'buy modules from these authors unseen' is pretty slim nowadays, but PirateCat is on it for sure.

Yes! Thanks for dropping in, Kevin. We Paizoniacs love to hear from the authors.

Of course!

I usually MC the Ennie Awards at GenCon, and it's always been fun watching Erik try to think of new things to say when he has to come up to the mic for the umpteenth time. Here's hoping I help contribute to something that does equally well. :D

Hey Kevin! Welcome to the party!

Did Velendo ever disbelieve that he was an old man? That would've been one hell of a change to the campaign. ;)

Ah! So you're that guy! When I saw the author list for Serpent's Skull I thought to myself, "I know I've seen that name somewhere..." This will be my second contribution to an adventure path, so it's kind of cool that I'm not the only "new guy" for a change. ;-)

Welcome aboard!

Welcome indeed. Knock it outta the park!

wow, my guess is you got the choice module of the bunch... character level 7 and exploring the ancient city might just be the high point of the campaign, much like 'Tides of Dread' is in Savage Tide.

I am really looking forward to this! And I constantly wonder at how it is that Paizo consistently gets the best authors. But I'm glad!

My current biggest regret: that there's no easy way to slip in a froghemoth.

Says who? It's OGL. And Jacobs made sure it got included in the Bestiary. So...have at it, man!

Sure...it's CR 13. And your chapter should have an APL of around 7th or 8th...but you could always water one down by having it previously injured by something. Maybe throw on the Young template as well to bring its CR down another notch. And, voila!

Contributor

Heh. I have a deep and abiding love for the froghemoth that probably isn't entirely healthy. It's fair game for City of Seven Spears, of course; I just need to get farther along in building the city before I see if it fits. I wouldn't want to include it unless it makes an encounter ridiculously fun.

I like flumphs, too. But they probably won't make an appearance. I have some standards.

Great advertising!!!

Well, you never know. This was "take an aspect of "City of Seven Spires" and use it in a four hour one-shot that I otherwise pulled out of my butt over lunch, but which turned out to have just the feel I was hoping for." So my ideas are good, but ideas are a dime a dozen; time to turn it into text and get the same feel.

Rule #1: never playtest your own adventure.

Qadira

Will ju ju magic be a new magic system for the AP? I'm kinda guessing no, but I'm curious as to what will be in the article, if it will be just fluff or if there will be a fair amount of crunch for playing a Mwangi caster.

Man, I really want to create my own zombie army, now!

There's nothing wrong with wanting to create your own zombie Army Zeugma!

But I digress, this adventure sounds awesome. Exploring ruined and lost cities is such a great premise...egads..."It belongs in a museum!"

I've updated the listing with the correct authors, description, and cover—which, I have to say, is one of my favorite AP covers in quite a while.

I agree, Vic.

Will this issue, be the first one with infomation on the 5 factions? Or will the second one have details, also?

My understanding is that you'll choose which faction you are going with in part two, so presumably there will be stuff on them in there...

There's information on the other five factions in "Racing to Ruin," but this is the first one where you actually get stats for other faction leaders; this is the adventure where conflicts and alliances with the other factions are going to be the most important and on center stage, basically.

I would totally buy a print of that cover mural if they were made available.

The half-elf Red Mantis is very sexy. But I'm wondering why all the face characters on the covers so far are melanin-impoverished? I understand they're NPCs, but for an AP set in Mwangi, they're awfully lily white.
I hope they packed sunblock.

Because of the nature of Sargava, which is a Chelish colony. The factions all hail from this colony, and all represent intruders of a sort into the Mwangi expanse; the locals aren't as interested in discovering an ancient city in their own back yard as they are, perhaps, in either living life or even getting these various factions out of their land.

I do hope we'll see more important Mwangi characters as this goes on. I'm still kind of miffed at the severe lack of Mwangi character art in the Mwangi Expanse book. I had really been looking forward to seeing the wide range and wild variance of culture amongst them visually represented in that book.

(the one time Mwangi are seen, they're shooting arrows at the iconics from the shore.... :( )
