The death mage is a new core class designed for use with the Pathfinder RPG. It is an arcane spellcasting class that focuses on powers drawn from the dead, dying, and undead. Death mages are not just specialist wizards or variant sorcerers, but an entirely new kind of arcane spellcaster with different types of powers and a unique spell list. A death mage is designed to allow characters to draw deeply on the iconic forces of death, spirit and shadow, without requiring them be evil or focus on undead (though both are options).

Though often mistaken for necromancer-specialist wizards, undead-bloodline sorcerers, or clerics of gods of death and repose, death mages are truthfully closer in function and training to druids. While a druid is servant to and master of the forces of nature—calling upon them for instruction, aid, and power—the death mage is similarly linked to the spirits and powers of the dead. This is an intellectual link rather than a spiritual one, for a death mage has chosen to immerse herself in the trappings of the dead and their graves. The first thing a death mage learns is to listen to the faint echoes left behind by spirits of the dead. While wizards learn spells from dusty tomes, and sorcerers are empowered by their bloodlines, death mages are taught by the shades of the departed.

I really like this class. I think the only real quibble I might have, and this speaks to the kind of games I run, is that I'm not that hung up on barring PCs from using the undead, so a lot of the work on the "breathless" template is kind of a long winded work around for the types of games I would run.

Other than that, this is a fun alternate class that works really well if you want a dedicated necromancer instead of a character that is a wizard first, and a necromancy specialist second.

The spell list is tailored to make it less of a blaster, and much more of a character that plays with life forces. Since the list is tailored for this class, you really have to work within the "Death mage" concept, instead of falling back on standard wizard spells in combat.

It is a d8 medium BaB class, which at first glance seems a bit over the top for a caster, except that as a "necromancer top to bottom," you are going to be doing a lot less controlling the battlefield and a lot more specifically targeting opponents and bringing combatants into the fight, so the HD progression doesn't feel out of place in that light.

This product is 14 pages long.

d8, 4 skills, low BaB, simple weapons(some martial weapons)/Light armor. In light armor they ignore the arcane failure chance.
Death mages are wizards that focus on death. They choose a pale road(type of speciality), With special abilities.
Corpse mage - more like a traditional Necromancer. Including undead cohorts just like the mage had leadership but as a skeleton or Zombies instead.
Ghoul mage - can eat the dead and regain hp, has a sicken touch and ghouls touch.
Tomb Mage - master the pain and fear undead cause in the living.
Reaper Mage - Those who hunt down and destroy undead.
Shadow Mage - those with a connection to the plane of shadow.

All of the traditions get access to a few class abilities that deal with death and the undead.

They have their own spell list, one that fits the concept of the class. Their is 11 new spells, the new spells are ok. None of them I thought was great but none seemed bad either. Dance Macabre I was expecting something different with, perhaps a curse or debuff. Instead if summons natures ally but the animals have no need to breath.

There is also info about how to use this class in a campaign and advice for adding new spells to the spell list.

Closing thoughts, one of the more interesting takes on a "Necromancer" class I have seen. I would have liked to seen the traditions expanded and fewer general class abilities personally. I also wish the spells had been more inventive. That artwork ranges from very good to subpar in one case.

All and all I thought this was a good buy, i am giving it a solid 4 stars. With a bit more effort this could have been a solid 5 star product.
