It is the only Pathfinder book you will ever need to start playing, but if you're like me you'll eventually want more.

When I first learned of tabletop RPGs my attention turned to D&D even though I knew next to nothing about it, nor did I know of anyone who played it. I only knew it because it was the name everyone knew when someone said "tabletop RPG" and the answer wasn't "what is that?" I wanted to play it but I didn't know where to start. I was lost, forlorn, and alone.

Then, one fateful day, I met someone online who told me about Pathfinder. I took one look at the Core Rulebook and I never looked back, and to this day I don't regret the decision one bit. The Core Rulebook is a solid start to any aspiring tabletop gamer's adventure and is a must own not only for the abundance of useful information it provides but also for the clean presentation and the magnificent art provided by Wayne Reynolds.

In short, if you want to play Pathfinder and haven't already, pick this book up immediately. It is well worth it.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

If there is any one book to have, it is this one. It’s hard to know where to begin to review this book, but that one word encapsulates it well. There’s a reason Pathfinder is thriving a decade into its existence, and it all starts here. If you don’t know anything about Pathfinder, you can think of it as a revised and improved version of a specific edition of D&D (the “3.5” edition). Its strength is the nearly infinite capacity for customization, and its weakness is that enormous customization introduces complexity. In other words, this is a “crunch heavy” instead of a “rules light” game. Trust me, it’s worth it though. This is going to be a long review because I’ve got fifteen chapters to cover in this massive, 575-page book! If you don’t have the patience to read through the whole review, the conclusion makes it clear: buy this book. With this and the Bestiary, you have years of adventure at your fingertips.

Chapter 1 is “Getting Started” (12 pages). This chapter contains a brief introduction to the game, an overview of each chapter, a glossary of common terms, an example of play (very useful if this is your first RPG ever), and the rules for generating ability scores for a character (how physically and mentally capable they are).

Chapter 2 is “Races” (11 pages). The “Core” races presented here are: Dwarves, Elves, Gnomes, Half-Elves, Half-Orcs, Halflings, and Humans. As you would imagine, there are advantages and disadvantages to each race. The chapter spends a page on each race, and beyond the rules ramifications it takes care to talk about what members of that race typically look like, what their culture is like, why they often become adventurers, and how they relate to other races. It’s not an overwhelming amount of information (which is good for new players). For the most part, these races stick to fairly standard fantasy expectations.

Chapter 3 is “Classes” (57 pages). There are eleven “core classes” presented in this book: Barbarian, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Sorcerer, and Wizard. The spread of classes does an excellent job covering different play-styles and roles within a group. The power level of these classes has been significantly bumped up from D&D 3.5, and there are a lot more choices to be made within each class. This makes the classes more complex, but also more satisfying to see advance up through each level. If you’re brand-new to Pathfinder, it might be good to stay away from spell-casters like the Druid, Cleric, Sorcerer, and Wizard until you get more experience, as the sheer number of choices to be made can be overwhelming at first.

Chapter 4 is “Skills” (27 pages). Skills are something that every character has and they determine the likelihood of success in doing certain things. Want to leap from one rooftop to another? Roll an Acrobatics check. Want to figure out what spell that evil wizard just cast at you? Roll a Spellcraft check. Different classes get bonuses to using particular skills, but every character, regardless of class, can become good at something if they invest their “skill points” in a particular skill. Pathfinder has condensed the number of skills slightly from D&D 3.5, though it still has more than newer RPGs tend to have. I like the diversity and ability to specialize in discrete areas, but some think there should have been further consolidation. Each skill is described with great detail on specifically what it allows you to do and not do, which is quite helpful in avoiding rules arguments.

Chapter 5 is “Feats” (29 pages). Feats are special abilities. Every character gets to choose one feat at every odd level, and some classes and races get “bonus” feats. A feat might be something that lets you fight better in darkness (“Blindfighting”) or it might be something that makes certain spells you cast more effective (“Spell Focus”). There are several dozen feats to choose from, so this can be one of the parts of character creation that takes the longest to do. Their value, again, is that they allow for enormous customization of a character. Just because there are two Fighters in the party doesn’t mean they’ll be identical, because feats allow them to operate in very different ways!

Chapter 6 is “Equipment” (16 pages). Your character will need a weapon, maybe some armor, and some other gear like a backpack or a coil of rope. But in addition, you might wonder how expensive a night’s stay at an inn is, or how much it’ll cost to persuade a local wizard to cast a spell for you. All of the answers are in this chapter. I really appreciate that every item and service isn’t just listed on a table with a price, but in addition most receive a description, a picture, and (sometimes) additional rules to explain how it works in actual gameplay.

Chapter 7 is “Additional Rules” (13 pages). The title of this chapter isn’t particularly helpful, as the entire book consists of rules. Really, it’s a miscellany of various things about your character. First up is Alignment, which is whether your character is good, evil, or somewhere in between. A lot of other RPGs dispense with such questions, but it is “hard-coded” into Pathfinder in the sense that it’s not just a role-playing choice: many spells, magic items, and other effects change depending on a character’s alignment. Next, there’s a few pages on “Vital Statistics” like determining a character’s age, height and weight, and (most importantly) carrying capacity (also known as “encumbrance”). If your character has a low Strength score, don’t expect him or her to be able to carry a lot of gear. Then, there’s a discussion of movement speeds in various contexts (in the course of a combat encounter, for example, or for travelling great distances overland). Last, a bunch of little things are covered under the title “Exploration”: how far characters can see in different levels of light, how to determine if an object can be intentionally broken, etc. It’s a chapter that’s easy to overlook but provides answers to a lot of “little things” that might come up during a session.

Chapter 8 is “Combat” (29 pages). Combat is a major part of Pathfinder, and there’s admittedly a lot to digest in a short number of pages here. The way the chapter is laid out isn’t necessarily intuitive, and later Paizo products (like the Strategy Guide) do a much better job making combat clearer. You’ll find everything you need in this chapter, but you’ll be flipping back and forth for a while. I’ve been playing for years and I still refer to it occasionally.

Chapter 9 is “Magic” (19 pages). This chapter discusses different categories of spells, how characters learn them, and how to read a spell entry in the next chapter. It’s a chapter that’s easy to skip over at first, but is actually pretty important once a campaign gets serious.

Chapter 10 is “Spells” (156 pages). You read that right: about a quarter of the book consists of an alphabetical list and description of several hundred different spells! The spells have been cleaned up and improved from D&D 3.5 for better gameplay, but what hasn’t changed is that magic still rules. If pure power is what you want, play a true spell-caster and you’ll find it.

Chapter 11 is “Prestige Classes” (23 pages). Prestige Classes are special classes that characters can eventually take, well into their adventuring careers, if they meet certain prerequisites. This book has ten of them: Arcane Archer, Arcane Trickster, Assassin, Dragon Disciple, Duelist, Eldritch Knight, Loremaster, Mystic Theurge, Pathfinder Chronicler, and Shadowdancer. For the most part, and until very recent, Pathfinder hasn’t been a game where prestige classes thrive. Apart from some specific flavour reasons, a character would usually be better off simply continuing in their base class rather than taking levels in a prestige class.

Chapter 12 is “Gamemastering” (15 pages). As its title indicates, this chapter helps the person running a game (the “Gamemaster” or “GM”) prepare an adventure, referee the rules, deal with common problems at the table, etc. It’s okay for what it is, but I’ve seen better resources to help new GMs figure out what they’re doing.

Chapter 13 is “Environment” (39 pages). This chapter contains a lot of little things to help make the setting interesting. It contains rules on weather, travelling through the wilderness, dealing with traps, and so forth. It’s primarily for the GM too and shouldn’t be a priority to master until more fundamental rules are digested.

Chapter 14 is “Creating NPCs” (11 pages). This chapter gives rules for creating background (non-player) characters by using “NPC classes” like a Commoner. I have to admit I never use this chapter, as I just rely on NPC stat blocks already generated in other Pathfinder products.

Chapter 15 is “Magic Items” (101 pages). Your adventurer is going to want some cool magic gear, and this chapter explains what it does, how much it costs, and how it’s made. It’s pretty extensive and detailed.

Last up, there are appendices summarizing “Special Abilities”, “Conditions” (status effects a character might be under), “Inspiring Reading”, and “Game Aids” (other products you can purchase).
The Core Rulebook is a hefty tome for an RPG book. For players coming from D&D 3.5, it’s basically a combination of the Player’s Handbook and the Dungeon Master’s Guide in a single volume, but refined and improved. The book is, with the single exception of the deities, completely “setting neutral” (that is, it’s suitable for play in any campaign world or a homemade setting). There’s some excellent artwork taken from other Paizo products mixed in with some artwork that’s more pedestrian. Still, the production quality overall is fantastic. I would normally go into more detail, but there are hard word counts on these reviews. So I’ll sum up by saying: this is the one book you won’t leave home without, and it’s worth every penny.

Special Note: The Core Rulebook was recently released in a smaller softcover. The interior is exactly the same as the sixth printing of the hardcover, but it’s lighter and easier to carry. I’ve been using it for a few months now, and I’m quite happy with the font size, reduced price, durability, and ease of use.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

Legendary. It's a beautiful book, with a nice smell, thick paper and rich color. I'm not a huge fan of the spine binding but given its size (about an inch thick) it will suffice.

I have both the PDF and print versions of this book. Other reviews have covered the contents well. I just wanted to point out that the PDF versions are much more practical than the print version, even though I bring both. The PDF is good for reading sections in depth without breaking your back or giving yourself a hernia. The physical book is great for flipping through the pages to find something you're not really sure what you're looking for or where. Also good for handing off to new players at the table to look at.

My primary concern is that the e-book version is not available in non-PDF. I'd love to have this additionally as a mostly graphics-free MOBI or EPUB version. That would be vastly easier to search through and move through on my iPad. Yes, it's largely available in the SRD - but I want the official Core Rulebook in a much lighter primarily-text eBook instead of a beautiful PDF.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

This is the real entry point for Pathfinder players, after growing beyond the confines of the Beginner Box. TL;DR-This is the basic rule book for the amazingly popular Pathfinder role-playing game. It's an phenomenal book that is well executed. I have a few problems, but nothing that isn't easy to overlook. 5/5

Art-The art style in this book sets the pace for all the other books in the Pathfinder RPG. Its a nice style that always looks heroic and fits well with the world they created. Damn fine stuff.

Mechanics-The mechanics of pathfinder are basically DnD 3.5. Nothing too risky here. If you liked 3.5, then you will like this game. Any problems in 3.5 show up here. That's part of the good and bad with building of an established OGL system. However, Pathfinder is worth the price of admission alone for simplifying the grapple rules. That right there makes the game worth it. HANDS DOWN!

Execution- The book is well organized with nice tables of contents and indexes to help you find what you need. It describes the mechanics well, but as before, some of the minor problems from 3.5 creep into the execution of the book. These are smaller issues, but they will end up making you go to the Paizo forums to get help. Another problem I have is the lack of a bestiary in this book. Most books at the $50 price typically include a small bestiary. I know that many more will follow, but why include the GM guide and the Players guide together if you don't include a smaller bestiary too? Again, it's a minor problem, but some food for thought.

Book Quality- This book is well done. Its heavy, and it should be for the price. You feel like you get your value for the price. The paper quality is high, so no smudging!

Final Thoughts-This is a good book. The problems I have are nit-picking. Good value for the money. If you like 3.5, you will love this! 5/5

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

Originally posted on www.throatpunchgames.com

It's organized in a way that makes sense and is therefore easy to refer to during a game if needed. There is plenty of information, the rules and classes are well balanced, and there are so many character, spell, and item options to explore just within this basic book. My only problem is that my book, purchased less than a year ago and used gently, is already starting to fall apart. The binding is a bit fragile and some of the pages have ripped slightly. The page part is really my fault, but I would appreciate if this beautiful book could be a bit more sturdy.

The content of the book is great. I didn't love it, but to me, 4e's faults were much easier for me to overlook, than 3.5. But I had found a gaming group, who hated 4e, and so it usually ended up with me begrudgingly playing 3.5, until one day I talked it over with the DM, who offered Pathfinder as a compromiae. As it turned out, after a few sessions, all of us (except one guy, but he's so resistant to change, that anything post-TSR was stretching it) loved pathfinder more than our respective favorite editions.

Pathfinder really just fixed a lot of my problems with 3.5 (though the addition of archetypes, as well as later books, like ultimate (insert book here) contributed more than the core book did, truth be told), and I really like the setting, much more than anything TSR/WotC produced, with the possible exception of Eberon.

The one reason I'm only giving it 4 stars is I'm a bit OCD with my books, so the fact thst it's so fragile is a big draw back; I've resorted to using the PRD almost exclusively. Though, the Art is gorgeous, so if you're not adverse to digital books, I'd recomend the $10 investment in the pdf ahead of the PRD. If you don't mind page tears, the hardcover is good too, but I can't really get over the cheap construction.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

I bought the core book a couple months ago as a bit of a compromise; I know this will sound like heresy to a lot of people, but I vastly prefered 4e to 3.5.
Loved the book, the rules, all of it. Make the system better then it was.

However, my major complain is concerning the sorcerer VS wizard balance.

Wizards had the flaw of preparing spells, memorizing them, and casting only those spells. They had the perk of getting more feats to compensate. Sorcerer on the otherhand did not need to memorize, they just cast, but had a limited arsenal.

Now, sorcerer still have the same flaw. However, they got the bloodlines. A way to boost they. They get: spells, powers, resistance, bonus feats, sometimes even bonus stats, depending on the bloodline. Don't get me wrong, it's cool. I love the idea. Where it's wrong it's when we look at the wizard. All they got as an improvement is this: choose between familiar or bond item. The prior is known. The latter is an item that enable the wizard to cast any spell he as in is spellbook (not prepared), whatever level he can cast, once per day. Which is good. BUT! if he should lose, or not have is item (like get confiscated by orc guards) he must make a concentration check at 20+spell lvl to cast ANY SPELL or FAIL. Oh, did i say there is no more concentration skill... good luck succeeding that... There is another perk they get, depending on the speciality the choice, which give minor powers... but still as the flaw of having the opposing schools (yes, plural... two). But these bonus are nothing close of the bonus the sorcerer get.

I say: Paizo, good work to book, good set of rules. but shame on you! You clearly favored the sorcerer and did to little to balance the power-ups you gave them.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

I bought this product, after reading it at a friend's house.

Mind you, I actually dislike computer based rpg's and many other rpg systems. The odd thing is, I cannot fully fathom why but I actually enjoy this form of the DnD role playing game and how fluid it is, while actually getting Annoyed at 3.5 which is suppose to be the best. As well as being somewhat distraught with Advanced DnD.

It actually is a wonderful book, for wonderful imagination. A few balance issues as any system will have, is easily overcome by adjustment of value in only slight areas and that is mostly because of how some people like to play.

If I were to have One complaint, is that the art while lovely seems slightly scarce on some situations like "tables". While it often is good to keep it simple on some of these pages there is absolutely "no frills" not even a faded background picture somewhere. However the pacing of the art "every 4 pages roughly" is decent enough to make this not fully a textual experience, but also a wonderful eye candy pleasure as well. Which, is important for it helps memory and indeed assists you to find what you are looking for without the need of a index system.

Having said that, what it Actually could have used is a Splash of different color "based on section" lightly used so that one can Easily reference "where they are". As most of the pages are a light brown with no variance on the pattern.

"Grandeur!, Bravo!, and must I say completely wonderful!"
If you enjoy both social interaction, and conceptual rendering of ,"fun scenarios" this kind of game is a beauty to behold.

•Edit: Though upon further use of this book and examination.

I must say that Construction of this book is Cheap.
The paper is Reallly thin, but it must be because of How many pages there are.
Though the quality of the paper is rather low end and tears easily, similar to comic book paper. The weaving to the bind of the book is loose and not very many strands secure the book to it's hard cover. All in all that is the only quality that I have come to be upset about is the actual physical quality of the book it's self. Water easily damages any page, holes get poked through by resting even a slightly solid object in it to hold place "by the weight of the book alone no other weight put on top". It also is really easy to rip the pages out on accident while turning the pages. They were really going for a Glass cannon design when they made this book.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

This is one of the grandest books I have ever bought for a game.

(4 stars)Mark Knightshttps://paizo.com/products/btpy88yj?Pathfinder-Roleplaying-Game-Core-Rulebook2011-12-30T23:19:37Z
Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

To start with, I would have preferred to give this 4.5 stars but the option does not exist. I can not give this game a perfect rating but the drawbacks are very minor...

I had heard nothing of Pathfinder until a friend of mine (who had never played the game) referred me to it after my overwhelming disappointment with DnD 4e. I am a long time gamer (over 25 years) and I generally tend to fringe games rather than core systems. I did play a good deal of AD&D in my time though so I tried DnD at 3e as well and was sorely disappointed then too. I skipped 3.5 as it seemed a money making venture and tried again at 4e to be totally gutted that this is the core system the industry is based on.

So I had just bought a load of 4e stuff when I bought this book and after 6 months those purchases were sold, unread and unopened on ebay after buying Pathfinder Core Rules. This system is SO usable, intuitive and well presented. At its heart is a focus on roleplaying rather than tabletop gaming and it is presented so beautifully.

The system is familiar, improved and well balanced. Information is presented in a cohesive format although the tome is a daunting task with many, many pages of rules.

This book covers the basics and largely all you need to play is one of the bestiary books for a true monster hunt!

The problems are minor but will have an effect on novice players. Firstly, there needs to be a detailed process on building a character. In this book it is spread out and you really need some experience to bring a character to fruition. Many games these days drop the character building tutorial and that sucks for newbies. Secondly, a lot of the important game affecting rules appear in appendices. Things like the way conditions effect, poisons and diseases are all shunted into the appendix. It makes them hard to find when using the index, or even when you make a logical guess at what chapter they should be in.

Love this game though.
This game sells well for a reason. It's amazing. Paizo took 3.5, improved on the vast majority of it, and continues to do so.

There is so much good about this book I can't even begin to list it all. The improvements to the 3.5 core classes are probably the most readily apparent change in the rules, followed by the changes to skills, and then maybe changes to the feats, and then some spells. Oh and Combat Maneuvers! So much more elegant than 3.5 special attack rules.

And this book combines what would be the Player's Handbook and the Dungeon Master's Guide into a single volume, so while that $50 price point looks high, you're actually getting a good deal. The 3.5 PHB didn't include magic item rules or prestige classes.

This is easily the best investment you can make by purchasing a product from this website. Five stars.

EDIT: I'd like to address the issue about the quality of the book binding; I can't speak for anyone but myself, but my CRB has survived my three roommates for over a year now, and is only just recently starting to really show signs of failure in the spine. One of my roommates happens to have little respect for other people's property. So, a year of heavy use by 4 people on a near daily basis as opposed to the below review's couple of weeks of "light" use sounds fishy to me.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

Okay, maybe that's a hefty claim, but Pathfinder has established its claim to RPG nobility by winning more awards than I care to count and by virtue of its tenacity in the market.

(3 stars)Ringtailhttps://paizo.com/products/btpy88yj?Pathfinder-Roleplaying-Game-Core-Rulebook2011-07-05T01:59:03Z
Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

This is a long overdue review-

I should start by saying that I’m glad I was given a 1st printing of the Pathfinder Core Rulebook as a gift. Because now, after seeing it in action for nearly 2 years, I would not have purchased it. I currently both play and run Pathfinder RPG games, because that is what my fellow gamers play these days (which I suppose speaks positively for the system), and it is decent enough. I enjoy game time with the Pathfinder system, I suppose, however nothing stands out as particularly new, exciting, or innovative. All in all it is a relatively minor rehash of an existing system. I really wanted to be a heavy supporter of Pathfinder just like most of my friends, after all it is what the cool cats are playing these days, but I’m still having trouble finding merit in that cause. After playing the beta version and with the hype surrounding it, I assumed that the little annoying problems in D&D v.3.5 would’ve finally been either streamlined and improved or logically evolved into its own game, but instead I received an enormous book to slog through for rules that only rarely improve upon the base material and often changes it for seemingly no good reason.

I’m not going to go into great detail on a lot of the lesser issues I have with the system, many I understand are personal preference more than anything, but there are a few glaring problems I need to mention.

The binding I particularly would like to discuss; it is quite possibly the worst bound book I’ve ever read. Not only can it not stand up to abuse as most hard cover books can, but after a few weeks of light usage the binding began to fail. It is only through extremely careful handling that it is amazingly in 1 piece, mostly at any rate. Its heavy, nearly 600 page count doesn’t help with that issue either. The other hard cover books for Pathfinder I possess, well, they haven’t fared much better. I want to note, however, that despite being of very poor physical quality, I consider the appearance (especially the artwork, which is wonderful compared to most RPG products) to be significantly improved over its predecessor. Again, I have a 1st printing of the book and do not know if the quality has improved in any later copies.

Luckily, the PRD is free online where it belongs (see binding and quality problems above). That, in itself, speaks greatly for the game. I fully support Pathfinder being free and readily accessible to all who want to play it.

The book is extremely difficult to navigate for new and old RPG players alike. While most in my group are used to the rules, when we need to find something specific we often have to cross reference several different pages each holding incomplete tables or summaries, which cuts into game time. Again the PRD has a search function that can help, which is amazingly useful, but only when you are near an internet accessible computer. We’ve attempted to teach a couple of newer players the system as well, but they’ve struggled with the layout, and it is frustrating to teach, while they much more quickly adapt to other games.

There have been quite a few positive changes to D&D v.3.5 along with the negative with the advent of the Pathfinder RPG, although most feel like a series of specific and relatively minor houserules. I unfortunately have to say that I do not recommend purchasing this book. It simply isn’t worth a $50 investment in my honest opinion. It is a solid game, but not only does it not stand out amidst a crowd, but you can get the rules for free online. But if you find a used copy a bit cheaper at a local gaming shop, you won’t be disappointed. Paizo publishes many great products, and I’ll eventually get around to reviewing each one that I have, but I can’t say that the Core Rulebook is one of them. Pathfinder brings with it a wealth of amazingly flavorful supplemental material, a vibrant campaign setting, and excellent modules and adventure paths.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

This is a long overdue review-

Ringtail2011-07-05T01:59:03ZPathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL): years of high fantasy gaming in one book (5 stars)Charles Dunwoodyhttps://paizo.com/products/btpy88yj?Pathfinder-Roleplaying-Game-Core-Rulebook2011-05-06T17:28:38Z
Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

Playtest Review
Three of the six players in my group didn’t try RPGs until last year and two started with Pathfinder. They have no experience with D&D 3.5 and with it being out of print that makes some sense. This review, therefore, doesn't refer to 3.5, but instead looks at how the Core Rulebook works on its own merits.

The Pathfinder Core Rulebook was extensively playtested openly with both and Alpha and a Beta version. Multiple successful adventure paths and modules provide examples that the system works and works well.

Even so, how does the Pathfinder Core Rulebook work for a brand new group, half of who are brand new to RPGs? What is it like for the GM and players? Here’s what the Core Rulebook promises:

“The Pathfinder Roleplaying Game is a tabletop fantasy game in which the players take on the roles of heroes who form a group (or party) to set out on dangerous adventures. Helping them tell this story is the Game Master (or GM), who decides what threats the player characters (or PCs) face and what sorts of rewards they earn for succeeding at their quest. Think of it as a cooperative storytelling game, where the players play the protagonists and the Game Master acts as the narrator, controlling the rest of the world.”

Does the Core Rulebook deliver on this promise? Do players, especially those recruited specifically to experience RPGs for the first time, feel like they are in a shared fantasy story enjoying directing the exploits of daring heroes they create and play?

Without a doubt, yes. The class based system gives a new player a hook on which to grab to get started and provides experienced players a familiar starting point. The classes are single names which do a good job of conjuring up what the player will have his character doing—a fighter fights for example and a wizard casts spells. New players grasp these concepts with no problems.

Character creation not only gives a new player a great start with a class, but it gets them thinking outside of combat when skills are chosen. Skills are easy to pick, with each character class getting a set number (set by class plus a bonus number for a high Intelligence). A character who takes one of the listed class skills gets a +3 bonus. Easy to grasp and gives each player an idea of the larger scope of abilities his or her character has and whether he or she trained mainly in class or pursued broader knowledge but at the expense of greater skill.

Race also goes beyond simple combat and game abilities. Each race has a half page of explanation and story ideas and a half page of rules. A player can get a good handle on how an average member of a race plays without getting buried in detail.

For the Game Master, chapters 12-15 provide everything needed to build worlds and adventures except for monsters. Campaign building advice, helpful rules for determining the challenge of an encounter and the right rewards, guidelines for creating NPCs, and detailed descriptions of magic items will be used over and over again by a GM.

This book is a toolbox containing all the key elements a player and a GM need to build characters, go on adventures, and enjoy a long campaign. While additional books like the Advanced Player’s Guide and the GameMastery Guide enhance and build on this material, they aren’t needed to play. A player only needs this book and the GM only needs it and the Bestiary to play in high fantasy campaigns for years.

The Core Rulebook does not provide a sample adventure or setting, it simply provides the guidelines for a GM to create their own works. A GM who wants to do less world and adventure building has many sourcebooks and modules to choose from but won’t find a premade world or adventure in this book.

The editing is tight, the layout is easy to follow, the art is great, and the story vignettes paint a picture of dangerous adventure undertaken by brave heroes.

If you need to start a new group or recruit new players, this book will help you start a new campaign and keep it going. If you want a decade or more of high fantasy gaming in a campaign built by you and your players with the option to add more material as you see fit, this book fits the bill.

As a bonus, you get high production values, extensively playtested rules, and a proven track record of adventures and worlds successfully built using these rules.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

Playtest Review

Indeed, the book does bridge certain problems like condensing the skills to give characters more choice to spread skills around. The rage powers for the barbarian class was another nice and welcome addition. Good ideas by the creators.

However, then there is the problem with certain base classes which get too much too quickly. One example of this was the rogue. Rogue talents every two levels on top of the rogues broad class skill list and skill points per level. Each is as strong as a feat on top of everything else the class gives; evasion, uncanny dodge, improved uncanny dodge, etc.

The fighter who now gets the knights ability to move normally in medium/heavy armor. Sorcerer bloodlines giving them more oomph. Especially the one about being destined for greatness. Seen a player play one with that bloodline. Very bad choices made in game. Power crazy and got screwed horribly partway through the campaign. The list goes on.

While it is the impression of more power to the players, this makes classes which are relatively unchanged weaker. Hardly a uniformity of power across classes.

Npc classes were also surprising. Commoners were d6, experts and aristocrats d8, warriors d10. Seeing that commoners are literally thse who engage in the least combat, the upgraded hit die felt odd. Warriors are pretty much thugs and militia with training but not the specialized training of the fighter. Sure, they don't get the bonus feats but the fact that their hit die was equal with the fighter made little sense.

Some new feats were equally mind boggling. Cleave which now allowed you to attack an adjacent foe as long as you hit the previous one. Almost strong enough to replace whirlwind attack which actually had a feat tree attached to it.

Acrobatic steps and nimble moves which let you move through 20 feet of difficult terrain as if it were normal. This felt like it was just grabbing the mantle of the swashbuckler and drunken master since its one of the signature abilities of their class.

Arcane strike which lets a spellcaster makes his weapon magical as a swift action. No limit on the number of times they can do it per day. Trying to get around the problem of obtaining a magical weapon regardless of whether its through buying or adventuring. Too convenient.

The most laughable one was master craftsmen which lets you craft magic items in the sense of +1 to +(whatever) magical items. Really? So the blacksmith who has no exposure to or knowledge of the arcane pulls mystical energy from OUT OF NOWHERE and imbues the normal axe with magical power. Huge gap in logic there.

The list goes on. Too many imbalancing feats. All in all, some nice ideas but think i'll stick with 3.5 primarily for classes, rules and feats.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

High review results for this book (average 4.7 out of 5) and so much praise. I personally have more experience with beta through heavy play testing. I’m giving this book a 2 specifically because it brings plenty of good ideas over from beta, e.g. what was done to skills, the tailoring choice of barbarian rage powers, the art, the presentation, the mixing of the players and dm into one book. However, balance has been abandoned. The monk and paladin class get far too much, compare them to the bard and the old stable, balanced fighter. Paladin has taken abilities from the healer class, an entire other class, while retaining its old abilities in the mix. The monk is frankly ridiculous, with ki, with bonus feats, with all the old monk gamut, but an increased progression on ac (yes I noticed). The penalties of flurry are also lessened, monk level and wisdom bonus added to combat manoeuvres so that they can be as proficient as what is the fighter’s specialty.

Few other things, the hit die change is just stupid. Upping the ranger’s hit die to the fighter level is a mistake. The ranger already gets more skills and a better selection. Why should he equal the highly drilled fighter when he already has points on him? Where is the balance? Wizards on a d6 is a laugh, an attempt to escape their old weakness. Rogues on a d8 is too much. The fighter in beta differs to the fighter in core. I far prefer the small steady bonuses in beta over the stolen 3.5 knight abilities in core.

I borrow a little from pathfinder in my 3.5 games, but what was done to the combat manoeuvres was just dreadful. A line to cross and beat isn’t as exciting as an opposed roll, although it does speed up play. CMD also gets dreadfully high far too quickly and easily. Defensive combat training (as in core, not in beta) is completely wroughty. Sure, the wizard adds his level to counter-disarms, why not? Seems plausible yes? Free and limitless cantrips, the wizard is not a warlock. Cantrips from a prohibited school (p. 79) also makes me think the wizard creators forgot what prohibited means.

Really close to a 1 with all the wrought and unbalance.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

And we arrive at core. This is one of the few rule books I throughly enjoyed reading cover to cover. The art, graphics and layout are superb. This tomb conveys exactly the look and feel of the game my group loves to play.
I started out with the PDF, and loved the design and layout so much I purchased the printed version as well. Just the fact that Paizo offers a PDF is wonderful. The hyperlinked indexing makes navigating effortless. I view the PDF on my desktop machine when prepping, and on an iPad when at the game. The hardback version is there when I want to browse the beautiful artwork, or enjoy the feel of a real book in my hands.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

This is fantasy RPG at it best.

The fighter was brilliant the first 4 levels while the wizard was just starting at level 5.

Most classes hated first level, because we could be killed by a commoner with a club with a semi lucky strike. The wizard was basicly a crossbow the first few levels. Cross references was needed for every single action, feat and ability. Levels where inconsistent, some classes had long periods of time where there was no advancement.

We all hoped that 4th edition would deal with this, and they did. The problem however was that we lost our ability to customize our heroes. A 4th level fighter would almost always be a 4th level fighter, you did not have the ability to go crazy and trying to make an intelegence fighter with focus on avoiding to die while using trip and so on.

This left my group with little lust for gaming, until this book came into my collection. My lust for gaming, basic classes, and adventure has been revisited trough the material in this book, so thank you paizo for taking the system I loved, and making it much better. The writing and rules explanations are great, the only short coming is that you named you standard dwaven ranger Harsk which is Danish for strong unpleasant smell, and your gnome bard is named lem which is Danish slang for penis. But then again, it gave us a laugh.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

I have played dungeons and dragon for the last 10-13 years, and after many years of gaming we all found different fun levels in dungeons and dragons 3.5. Pathfinder has brilliant re-envisions of the original rules, and it feels like a natural progression from 3.5. All of the rule changes I've encountered have been positive ones, and the game runs a lot smoother than my 3.5 games.

On to this book itself, it is absolutely beautiful. The style of the book is amazing. It has that awesome, old-fashioned feel. The artwork... divine! I can't remember ever being this happy with the artwork and style of a D&D book, ever. And of course, while a lot of the writing is a reprint of the 3.5 SRD, it is well written and organized compared to a lot of other printed books that I've used.

I loved 3rd & 3.5 so I was excited to see how 4th would progress gaming to a new level... Was I ever sorely mistaken. 4th edition is a great game, mechanically, but it lacks what really draws people into D&D, role-playing. After spending 6 months playing 4th edition "D&D" I could no longer go on with the charade, 4th edition was a pile of MMORPG garbage so it was back to 3.5 even with all of its problems.

Then a friend suggested that I look into Pathfinder who had picked up where WotC had left off, and I can't tell you how glad I am that I followed his advice. Pathfinder took a system that most would agree was very good and works out the kinks. They didn't reinvent the wheel they just took a great product and smoothed it out. Now my group can continue to play the game that we all enjoy so much thanks to Pathfinder picking up and carrying on with true D&D.

In my opinion Pathfinder is the new name for Dungeons and Dragons while sadly D&D is the new name for pen and paper World of Warcraft. Thank you Paizo for such a great product. Along comes my little bro and he tells me that Paizo is making 3.5 but better. I went right out and got the core book. I am amazed. What a well thought out game. I really love the final version of this book especially since you can trace the evolution of the revisions based on the interaction with the game-testing community. The layout is familiar, but with new innovations that make the content seem new. Also, I think that the captions between chapters suck you into the dynamic of the iconic characters.
Also, on a personal note, the choice to go to a 4th edition when there was still so much to enjoy in 3.5 made me angry. Seeing just how well Paizo kept the 3.5 rules alive with only relatively minor modification makes me feel like I wasn't alone in wanting 3.5 to live on.
I am SO grateful for this book and this system.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

I've followed the new rules for the Pathfinder system through the Alpha and Beta versions, printing out several versions with "borrowed toner" from my office.
Most of the rules changes are logical and streamline the game without changing too much too drastically, and the overall effect is a similar degree of drift as the difference between 3.0 and 3.5.

That having been said, there are still a few places where some changes seemed to be less about making the game run smoothly and more about addressing vocal segments of the gaming community (spiked chains anyone).

Over 500 pages of joy. This book packs in everything you would ever need to run a game. It is printed on beautiful paper, and the ink does not smear. The pictures our amazing. Each one could be a story unto itself. Having played a few games under my belt the changes I like the most our to the classes. Each class got revamped and got little things added.
I Love this book and I love this game.
Plus worst comes to worst it will kill most cockroaches for you.

For those who aren't familiar with the beta rules, this is an updated take on the 3.5 OGL system, and meshes well with other 3.5 OGL games and splat books.

The only thing I disliked, and I am not deducting anything from the rating for this, was the wait. I finally got my copy in Hardcover, but this may be because I am not from the U.S, I couldn't get Paizo to ship it to me for the price I would pay instore :(

It became difficult to go over all the little (and big) tweaks I wanted in my games with new players.

Then this came out. The book was beautiful and well thought out. It brought more fun to players and a better balanced game. I can't wait for the other 2 books to come out.

Needless to say, I switched to Pathfinder and have not had a single regret yet. My players are really into it too. When they say "THRIVES" they really mean it. I don't have to tweak many rules either (beyond a house rule or two)... I am very happy with the system.

Also, the adventure modules are fantastic! Since getting into PFRPG I began a meetup.com group and everyone there that has tried it, loved it.

(5 stars)nomadicchttps://paizo.com/products/btpy88yj?Pathfinder-Roleplaying-Game-Core-Rulebook2009-09-05T20:13:06Z
Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

... for giving the Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook 5 stars. Even if it has some errata, and bits of rules that one may disagree with, it is the result of an RPG milestone, and a work of art at the same time.

I've been playing RPGs since the 80s, and I can't think of any time, ever, that so many players were actively involved in the evolution of a game system. Part of it is enabled by the advent of the internet, but the majority of the credit goes to the pros at Paizo that looked to the fanbase for inspiration and relentless playtest. The interaction only made us all hungry for more!

The end result is a weighty tome that made me smile just at the sheer size of it! It's awesomely huge! The cover art is a phenomenal WAR piece that sets the tone perfectly. Graphically, the layout is decorative without being distracting, and the text is easy to read. It shouldn't even need to be mentioned, but the ink doesn't smudge... <ahem> It smells great too!

The sheer volume of game rules included is boggling - it has all of the requisite players rules - basics, races, classes, equipment, spells; along with game system - combat, magic, skills, feats; and GM guides, including prestige classes and magic items. The only thing it DOESN'T have is monsters! It really is a comprehensive RPG tome, on par with the old WFRPG in levels of "complete-ness".

I'm not going to spend much on the rules themselves, as you should already know they are an updated D&D 3.5. If you are new to Paizo, the best part is 95% of them have been thoroughy playtested and revised over the last couple years, so you can join in knowing you aren't getting a gimp revision!

In summary, I am very happy with the PF RPG rulebook - I was expecting something excellent, which is the Paizo standard, and got something extraordinary! Not only is it a historical moment in RPG evolution, but a superb product.

I hope the 4e devs take note - PF RPG shouldn't be looked at as a competing product, per se, but the production values of this tome have set a new standard in excellence.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

... for giving the Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook 5 stars. The biggest differences are the tweaking of some badly designed mechanics (I'm looking at you Grappling), simplification of buying skills (I much prefer this new system), and a whole lot of new bells & whistles in the form of expanded class options and filled in levels. Many ideas only touched upon in 3.5 get the royal treatment such as the idea of bloodlines for the sorcerer.

One area of concern I had was the Monk. At first glance it looked like nothing special had been done for it besides a small number of changes.
The Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook is everything I always hoped D&D 4E would be, but failed to.

PFRPG is loyal to the roots of the game and to the players who have carried it forth for so many years.
It is obvious that the game's designers love and respect the game as much as the fans do.

It brings a fresh breath of life to the game and fixes the vast majority of problems of D&D.

The quality of the book is impecable and its sheer size is justifies its price. 578 pages - all full of relevant and thoughtthrough material.

There are unfortunately a number of small typos and editorial glitches, but nothing that would detract significantly from my enjoinment of the book.

I look forward to implementing these roles in my PF AP.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

Fatastic piece of work.

There are errors of course, and everyone has different tastes...having been part of the alpha & beta testing, I'm impressed with the way the final version evolved from alpha.

Can't please all the people all the time.

I only have a few gripes, I don't like the armor pictures taken from the Gamemastery cards, they're not very accurate versions of real armor (particularly the banded mail, which doesn't even match the description, and the dwarven plate looks like a samurai armor knock off instead of a thick stone version of Platemail.)

The maneuver system is a blessing compared to the old grapple rules. The new skill system makes character/NPC creation much easier.
Some of the weapons (spiked chain) have been changed, character classes expanded in an attempt to equalize the classes. Sorcerers and wizards are now mechanically and thematically different rather than just in name and meta-game stats.

All of the classes got upgraded, with the weaker classes getting the most upgrades. Overall the game is more balanced than 3.5 but the cost is increased complexity in almost all the classes and increasing power relative to it's predecessor. While you can use 3.5 material the PfRPG classes are more powerful, in particular the ones that were weak in the past so anything you have designed for 3.5 should be ramped up a bit.

What is a bit frustrating to me is that many of these changes make the game even less accessible to beginning players. Almost all the classes, including the fighter are more complicated and tougher to learn than their predecessors.

First of all, here's what you get: A much prettier version of 3.5 w/ some of the proud nails removed. DMG and PH in one book. In other words, if you've been following Pathfinder Roleplaying Game (PFRPG), pretty much exactly what you should be expecting to get.

The book is beautiful? Huge, sewn binding, ink that doesn't smear, amazing art (including armor that doesn't appear to do double duty as S&M gear).

Edit: It turns out the signatures •aren't• sewn to the backing, which is a huge no-no for a book of this size. I'd gladly drop an extra $10 or even $20 if it got me a better binding.

The game itself, in its attempt to clean up the biggest problems with 3.5, intoduces some great ideas. Enter Combat Maneuver Bonus (CMB) and Combat Maneuver Defense (CMD), which act in tandem to unify combat maneuver resolution mechanics. The math may need some tweaking, but the idea is sound and delivers a noticeable effect in speeding up the use of maneuvers.

But for the most part, under the (very pretty) hood, this is just mostly 3.5. Which, again, is to be expected. If you really enjoyed 3.5, and/or you main concerns are easily addressed with houserules, this is a five-star book. There is also Paizo's great content to consider, which just sweetens the pot.

But — and this shouldn't be a secret to anyone — if you dislike D&D 3.5, you probably won't care for Pathfinder. I don't think it is different enough to really turn many people around. For those folks, this book is probably 3 (or even 2) stars.

I have to say I am very disapointed. There are several problems with the PDF that should have been easy to correct before release.

1. Pages out of order. Page 548 comes after 552. I dont know if there are more like this but this is first one I found.

2. Messed up links. After you hit the cleric the rest of the PDF links for the character classes are messed up. Several classes link to cleric domain pages and to get to say the monk you have to click on the wizard link. Did no one take 5 minutes and click on all the links before release?

3. No good collapse. The Beta was great, all the character classes collapsed to a link named class, all the skills to a link named skills, etc, etc. In this release even when you do a maximum collapse you still have over 30 tabs to sort through. Not good.

Now the plus side is that Paizo can fix all of this in about an hour and put up a revised PDF that anyone can download. Here is to hoping they do this and they do it soon.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

This is just a review of the PDF, nothing more. IMO it is only a small step towards D&D evolution. Although it does it in the correct path, and with retrocompatibility absolutely assured (actually I don't know why they even posted a conversion guide... I think for the most part you don't even have to convert the preexistent material, just be familiar to how the old spells/skills work in the new rules). The material presented comprises mostly the less controversial parts of the BETA playtest and pictures/images/drawings all correspond to previous game material published either in the AP line or in the GameMastery line, which I think is nice, but could have gone further. Given that the free Beta-playtest is 90% of what's being published and that images are re-used, you just wonder why the price raises to $49.99... In my case, I paid up because I'm really thankful to them for all they're doing in trying to keep the spirit of old-school D&D alive (in every line of their publishing company). The core does set up a nice cornerstone for the rest of the material to be published from now. Keep up the good stuff.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

As many others have stated, Pathfinder RPG only got half the way most of us expected it would get. I have two bookshelves of 3rd edition material, seven Paizo adventure paths to run, and I want to roll with that.

And now, with the PFRPG, there will be ongoing support for the game of my choice. I don't have to ask new players to hunt down PHB on auction sites, I can just point them to the dirt-cheap PDF and have them up to date in no time. Splendid.

The changes are mostly sound, the new rules elegant, one would wish for a few more radical improvements but we must remember about the Backwards Compatibility with all the previous material.

It's a great update and a great way of keeping the 3ed torch burning. Oh and just for sheer cojones of the endeavor, Paizo deserves 5 stars.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)

What can I say ?
And after checking out the rules for my favorite races (Human, Elf, Half-Elf) and classes (Druid, Wizard) I noticed a great, promising improvement over Third Edition. So now I'm really happy I got it, supported Paizo by paying them, and it's all very exciting.

So many more ‘core rules’ options for many of the basic classes (EG feat trees for fighters, rage powers for barbarians, ki pools for monks) as compared to the game’s third edition D&D forerunners and further areas of rules cleaned up (EG combat maneuvers), but so much more which could have been done but which was not. The goal of ‘backwards compatability’ may have been responsible for the reining in of some of the changes which were aired during the public Beta playtest that I had personally found to be exciting.
However an improvement in my opinion in many areas of 3.5 D&D and the author and his design team show promise I believe – well worth watching for the future.
