Be sure to post back if the copy you order at Amazon.com ends up being a 3rd printing. I'm thinking about buying another copy for my group, too.

Yes, all the new copies I had purchased are 3rd printings.

Can someone tell me if the PDF version is OCR'd (with searchable text) or if it's just a scan of every page?

Yes. Not only is it searchable, it is internally hyperlinked. And it gets updated with errata whenever they do a new printing.

Paizo is now shipping copies of the Fourth Printing of the Core Rulebook. Errata to previous printings is available from the RPG Resources page, and anyone with access to the PDF version can now download the Fourth Printing from their My Downloads page.

Were there substantial changes from the third to fourth printings?

Check out the "Errata for Core Rulebook Third Printing" PDF on the aforementioned RPG Resources page for the list. (If you have an older printing, there's an errata file for your printing there, too.)

Errata for Core Rulebook Second Printing v3.0: 1.3 MB zip PDF
Errata for Bestiary First Printing v1.0: 1.5 MB zip PDF

At the moment it says "Second Printing" for both even though you can see the v3.0.......

Oh shoot, I had just bought a new Core Rulebook not even two weeks ago. :(

I was that close to buying a third printing as well but decided I usually use my iPad and that a the least wait till AK Permanent Fund dividend to show up on the 7th.

Only reason I'd be picking it up is so people could look at it before society play. Still not sure if. Really need one for other people. Am glad I waited though.

Even though the errata is only three pages for the 3rd printing.

The most notable change seems to be that Spring Attack is now a full-round action. That makes it impossible to use it with combat option that are themselves defined as standard actions, such as grapple, Vital Strike, or Cleave, for example.

Is there a list of what was changed for the fourth printing available yet? I only see errata for the first three on the Resource page.

The changes made in the fourth printing are the third printing errata.

Yes; there's a separate update file for each of the first three printings, so pick the printing you have, and download that file.

Is there a reason why the PDF of the whole book went from 77 MB to 122 MB? Poor Adobe Reader's going to choke on that . . .

Adobe Reader is a horrible resource hog. Drop it and use some more efficient PDF reader, such as FoxIt.

Boy, you haven't updated in a long time! It went to 99 MB shortly after release last August when we added more useful bookmarks, and then to 105 MB this past May when we updated it to match the third printing.

In the initial release, recurring graphic elements were only included in the file once each (more or less). Sadly, due to technical issues related to keeping the internal hyperlinks working, there are now extra copies of any recurring elements for each page that has changed since the original release. Hopefully someday the problem that's forcing us to do it that way will be resolved, and we'll be able to drop it back to something more like 99MB.

What is sad, is that in this day and age 122 MB is still an issue for some people.

I can't explain that. I've just looked at four different copies of the all-in-one 3rd printing PDF, including watermarked and non-watermarked versions, and they're all in the 104MB neighborhood. (Things like drive formatting/block size variation across different hard drives leads to different file sizes for the exact same file, but not on the order of 30%!)

The 77 MB version is 3rd printing; I downloaded it in May.

I sometimes find myself with my USB HD perusing PDFs on computers that I can't just add RAM to or install software all willy-nilly. ;)

I have FoxIt, but I haven't quite switched entirely -- keyboard shortcuts are just different enough to be annoying. But with WotC's PDFs, I always used FoxIt to open the Spell & Magic Item Compendiums -- those were some horrible PDFs. Exalted had some monstrous PDFs, too -- the White & Black Treatises was a PITA, with the black background & white text.

My 3rd printing PDF was 77 MB, and the 4th is now 122 MB. Just downloaded it tonight, so wherever the mythical 104 MB version of the 4th printing is, it ain't on the download server.

I have the same files as Kavantum, the previous one was 77mb and the new one is 122mb.

Am I correct in understanding that the hardcover edition of the 4th print is now available? If so, does anyone know if AMAZON.COM will have this newest eddition? Sorry, but AMAZON's price beats PAIZO's price on this book substantially enough to wait for AMAZON to get the 4th printing.

Paizo has always said they can guarantee their own shipments of ‘x’ current printing, but cannot speak for other sellers.

But in my opinion, since 4th printing JUST came out, I would guess Amazon probably is not selling it yet. But then, I could be wrong. To be honest, there is no way to confirm it, unfortunately. At least as far as I know. The closest would be is to ask someone just ordered a Core Rulebook, and I mean very recently as in the last few days. However, even then it isn’t a guarantee.

Sorry, wish I could have been more help.

Ok... I was mistaken about having looked at watermarked third printings. Watermarked third printings are indeed in the 77MB neighborhood, which is vexing me, because the *non*watermarked third printing PDF is 104MB. Neither Ross nor I have any idea how the watermarker managed to make the file smaller—everything we know suggests that it should have made it slightly *bigger*. Gary is the real expert on the watermarker, though... maybe he can figure it out when he's back from vacation.

Did I just read that correctly?

If I were to order a third copy of the core book it would be he fourth printing?

Have two first(one signed by all I could at Gencon) and am thinking of another....so if I order from you all it would be fourth?

Might still get a third from local store to support but not 100% on either or right now.

If you order it from us now, you will definitely get the fourth printing.

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

We have updated the PDF of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook.

The PDF update issued earlier this month left out the following changes that were made to the fourth printing of the book:

  • In Chapter 11, on page 391, on Table 11-9, the Pathfinder Chronicler's 3rd-level ability has been renamed from "Bardic music" to "Bardic performance."
  • In the Appendix, on page 563, in the "Invisible Creature is..." table, the header of the second column has been changed to "Perception DC Modifier." Additionally, the entry for "Not Moving" has been changed from "–40" to "+20."

In addition, we've significantly reduced the file size of the single-file version, dropping it from 128.4 MB to 79.2 MB (approximately).

Those of you who have access to the PDF may download the updated version for free from your My Downloads page.

The errata PDFs for each previous printing of the book have also been updated with these changes; you can find them on the Pathfinder RPG Resources Page.

Very cool about the smaller size of the PDF. Mine came out at 75.6 on the download. DLing it now.

Great to see the fourth printing going out. Our group now has 4 copies of the rules, one look at mine and they knew they all needed one. I think I'll pass my 1st print on to one of the other players and buy me a 4th print.

Silly question, but I figured I'd ask since I don't see anything on it. Are you allowed to take 10 on a Spellcraft check (Without being a rogue with the Skill Mastery rogue talent)? Particularly related to crafting magical items.

Pathfinder Battles Case Subscriber; Pathfinder Deluxe Comics Subscriber; Pathfinder Card Game, Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Yes, you can for crafting magic items. Sean even confirmed so in another thread.

Of course, as long as you meet the requirements to ‘take 10’.

Hobbun wrote:

Okay, thank you. My DM seems to think that crafting items in the ideal environment is still distracting enough to warrant not being able to take 10. Another player thought you couldn't because if you could take 10, there'd be no reason for a check at high levels because everyone would make it.

Paizo Charter Superscriber; Pathfinder Deluxe Comics Subscriber

Hm... shouldn't this be Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (PFRPG) rather than Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (OGL)?

You’re welcome.

If your DM feels a fairly quiet, comfortable and well lit place (which is what the book says you need) is still too distracting, I’m not sure where a Take 10 would be viable for him, to be honest.

Also, Sean has said they wanted crafting to be easy. Well, crafting for magic items, that is. Now, that is ‘easy’ for items you meet the prereqs for. If you try to craft items where the +5 DC’s begin piling on, yes, it can become difficult.

The first would be correct but redundant; the second is correct and (ever so slightly) more useful.

Ordered the hard copy a few hours ago from Amazon; any idea if it'll be 3rd or 4th version?

It's not really a bother if it's 3rd, the errata is easy to add in, and there's always the PDF - I'm mainly curious! *grin*

(And I can't wait to get the hard copy in my hands, if only to read while I'm out commuting.)

I have yet to see a 4th version in a local store. Its highly possible that Amazon sells through them fast enough to have the 4th but I bet you its not.

Since the 4th version was only printed or announced late August they probably still have the 3rd.

Pazio though if you were to order direct from them said your guaranteed to get the 4th version.

I would have ordered via Paizo, but as I had a $25 buck Amazon gift certificate available, thought I might as well get it via them. The only info they list is that it's 579 pages and printed August 19, 2009, so here's hoping! *grin*

Looking forward to reading the additional material and finding a game. Thanks again for the suggestion even tho' I already had it. *grin*

Is there any way of getting a "lite" version of the PDF made for use on ipads/e-readers (say something at 150 dpi)?

I just got an iPad and when I open the current PDF up on it, it about chokes my poor iPad's PDF reader.
