Okay, but I've Seen Better

3/5

I've run about fifteen sessions now of Curse of the Crimson Throne using these dice, so I feel reasonably competent to give an opinion. My verdict is that they're okay. The borders of each die have little scrollwork designs that I guess are supposed to evoke aristocracy, and the highest number on each die has an ornate crown (which fits the theme of the AP well). Yellow numbers on a red background aren't the easiest to see on the table, and the numbers are in a design that means I often have to pick them up and look closely to see what the result is (the "1" and the "7", for example, are pretty close). In short, they're not as good as some of the dice I've seen produced by Q-workshop for other APs.

They do come in nice little packaging. The back says: "Break the Curse of the Crimson Throne! Paizo Publishing and Q-workshop are proud to bring you the 100%-official Pathfinder: Curse of the Crimson Throne Adventure Path dice. Each of these richly detailed dice features the colors and accursed crown of Korvosa, the rebellion-ravaged setting of your next adventure. Fight the power and seize a throne of your very own!"

Nice, but not exciting

4/5

Good colors that are natural together and easy to read. A crown replaces the highest number on each die, which is flavorful, but the rest of the design seems flat and doesn't evoke the AP. Overall I like the set and it's one of the twenty sets I carry with me each week, but it's lacking that special something.

Beautyful but...

3/5

I bought them at the RPC in Cologne this weekend. They are beautyfull, but the d20 has a 6 and a 9 with a difference that cannot even be called marginal. The "triangular shape on top" that works with d10 and d12 wont help with this one.

Unlucky craft rolls for others? :)

5/5

The dice are beautiful. Very fancy. The use of the colors of Korvosa is a very nice touch! I can't wait to use them when I run CotCT!

Unlike the other reviewers, my d20 has pips to denote the 6 from the 9. Even if it didn't, the top of the numbers would have had a triangular pattern above them while the bottom would have space. Odd. Maybe the mistake was caught in production, but a little late?

6's & 9's

3/5

I love everything Q-Workshop does, they are my dice company of choice. I think this is my 5th set of dice from them and I plan to buy the set for Second Darkness when it comes out. I love their dice cups, I love their dice bags. In short, I like this company a lot.

But... the 6s and the 9s look exactly the same on these dice. There is no little dot in the corner to indicate proper reading. Sometimes the correct number can be figured out by reading the other faces and comparing the position of the numbers on the faces of the die. However, the d20 has the exact same figure printed side by side in the exact same position. So the only way to get the right number is by checking the opposite side of the die and adding that number to the first result to get 21 for a d20, 13 for a d12, or 9 for d10. It's a small problem that could have been easily solved in design.

I advise a buyer to use the tip of knife and put a tiny dimple next to the bottom of the number to indicate "down" and used a yellow crayon to color it in.

After seeing the dice for the Rise of the Rune Lords campaign I'm counting on paizo to pull out another awsome set for Curse of the Crimson Throne. however the description isn't quite as enticing as I would have hoped. Mayhap they look better than they sound?

I guess this means next summer I can look forward with bated breath to getting a purple set of Second Darkness dice.

Paizo is turning me into such a dork. :)

We don't actually design them—Q-Workshop does. (We do get to approve them, though.) We haven't actually seen this set yet, but we're expecting mockups soonish.

Is it just too cool for words, kind of like the last set...and the cards...and the maps...and everything else!

Are these still scheduled for a January release? Still no pictures of them and I didnt see them on the product schedule for January. I hope so as Im looking forward to getting them.

Sovereign Court

Yes When?

And to the Polish employees of the Q-Workshop, I would like to say, DZIEKUJE!

I haven't been able to get ahold of the Q-Workshop guys since before Christmas so I can't say when these dice will be released (but January is looking unlikely). I'll post when I hear more and I apologize for the delay.

We've now got an image of the dice! The first shipment, which should cover current preorders, should be leaving Poland this week; the second shipment, which will be a bit larger, will follow a couple of weeks later.

DiegoV, the dice don't appear on our product schedule page because the schedule only tracks products we publish directly; Q-Workshop is the manufacturer of record for these.

Huzzah!

I really like my RotRL dice so Im looking forward to getting these. The Borders I work at has a listing for some Second Darkness ones but not these so I wasnt sure they were still planned, thats why I was looking through the product schedule. (By the way, I eat my 33% discount from Borders to buy direct from you guys to show my support)

These are the only Second Darkness dice in the works—what is it about the listing you have that suggests it's not this set?

And thanks for your support!

I'm not Diego, but this thread is about the Crimson Throne dice, not the Second Darkness set, so perhaps that is what he means.

Mostly that these are CotCT dice and the listing we have is for Second Darkness dice (with an estimated release of April 09). See I was trying to look up these dice (CotCT) at work so I could see if there was a street date listed but I couldnt find them, which is why I looked up the Product Schedule. But I did see SD ones listed for April. They could be these misnamed. *shrug* Its happened before (they did have an ISBN attached to them I can get for you if youd like).

D'oh! Please allow me a second to stuff my brain back into my skull before continuing.

[stuf stuf stuf]

Ahh. Well, Q-Workshop is indeed planning a Second Darkness set, but it will be a few months behind the Crimson Throne dice set, so I'm surprised that you're seeing that set in the system before you're seeing Crimson Throne. It could be that somebody mixed up which set was next, or it could be that somebody forgot to solicit the Crimson Throne set. We'll let Q-Workshop know, and hopefully they can sort it out.

That would help solve the mystery... the ISBN for the Crimson Throne dice is 978-1-60125-156-5; the ISBN for the Second Darkness Dice would be 978-1-60125-171-8.

Ok, I will check that. I am off tomorrow so I will check on Thursday. In either case Im excited for the CotCT dice and for the possible SD dice as well!

I got the ISBN. It is for the Second Darkness dice not the CotCT ones.

Silver Crusade

I like those. They seem to fit with the overall art theme of CotCT, epically the artwork of just the throne.

I Need to get back into the loop on all things Paizo, ha ha.

We'll let Q-Workshop know there may be a problem with the book trade solicitation for the Crimson Throne dice. Thanks for your help!

are these out yet?

Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32, 2010 Top 8

Not interested in the CotCT die set, but I want to see the second darkness set.

Any news on when these will be available?

Q-workshop has shipped me the first sets of CotCT dice but they haven't arrived yet. I'm hoping that they get here this month but I truly have no idea when they will arrive. As soon as we get them, the pre-orders will start shipping out.

Liberty's Edge

These dice seem to be a little behind schedule.

How many sets are arriving? Will only preorders be serviced? When can I hope for my set?

It still says January 2009. March 2009 has arrived. Any update?

BTW, will the SD set be late as well?

gief dice plz!

Hey gang, we're still waiting for the shipment to arrive so please hang in there just a little longer. :)

Huzzah!!! The first wave of the Curse of the Crimson Throne dice have arrived and will begin shipping out today. Thanks for being so patient everyone.

Yeah, I just got the confirmation mail. Now they'll arrive in time to finish CotCT (and maybe some of my players) with them! :)

I think the dice sets should be part of the AP subscription.

I prefer not, AP issues only in the AP subscription please.

Though a ship with subscription option for separate orders would always be nice.

You're right. I want these dice, but I don't want to pay separate shipping.

One suggestion for improvement, even though the dice look really cool, it has bothered me in recent years that companies started shipping dice sets with only 1d6, when so often, rolling d6s, you need more, sets used to ship with 4d6, and it would totally be worth the price increase if I could get a set of dice with 4d6.

Since most damage done by wizards use d6's, a block of 24 would be nice.

Not half as cool and the Deadly Sin runes...But very pretty dice.

I may get them as an add on if I'm ever putting together an order or stuff. But I wouldnt place an order just for them.

Some sets still come with 4d6. Helps with character generation if you use dice rolling.

Beyond that, the only permanent solution to the d6 problem is to get a 36er block.

Um, apparently I can currently preorder these for January 2009.

I want to buy some, but these dice are as unreliable as the minis for release dates.

Any idea when we might, realistically, see some in store?

Hmm. They shouldn't be listed that way... I'll have Jeff look into it.

It wouldn't be for me - I've got plenty of "fireball" (red) and "lightning bolt" (white) dice, from cubes. I don't need more D6s with a typical die set, and it'd bump up the price by close to 50%.

Just wanted to post another perspective....

Sorry about that. It is fixed and should update on the website soon.
