Help make Kobold Quarterly the site of the year and go vote for us here? Do you want the gnomes to win? Those underpants stealing, big-nosed, stew-cooking gnomes...watching you from your garden, biding their time. Kobolds are honest-- with them, you know it's a trap, and not just a clever ploy.

I'd tell you about the new Open Design Patron Project: Midgard Tales for Pathfinder, but it looks like you probably already know! We're barely 36 hours into the campaign, and almost at 85% funded. Wait, you didn't know? Well, the good news is that you've got plenty of time to sign up. The better news? Keep reading...

Midgard Tales will contain 13 new adventures for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, with new takes on classic RPG themes. This book will define the Midgard campaign setting the way legendary adventures such as Dragonlance did back in the day.

Patrons will join lead designer Christina Stiles, assisted by Ben McFarland and Wolfgang Baur, to pitch and design 13 adventures for Pathfinder that will remake classic themes. Already they’re hearing from various designers who want in, with tales such as:

• A dragon adventure set in the Northlands
• A visit to the Master of Demon Mountain
• A celestial adventure on the Sky Stairs of Beldestan,
• A nocturnal tribe of long-hidden orcs and their evil goddess,
• The unchaining of the imprisoned god of the Sea

Adventures to be remembered, adventures that won’t be "just another dungeon" -- Midgard Tales aims to encourage the best of new and existing adventure design talent, to give you adventures from levels 1 to 12 that your players never forget.

Join Midgard Tales today!

Who will claim the crown of kobolds? Crafted of tin, it'll shine like a star if you win!

We've got a Pathfinder contest for Midgard's Zobeck. Submit an entry detailing any one of the following: a monster, item, encounter, spells, feats, character theme, traps, hazards, powers—things well-suited to the setting. You've got 800 words to put your flourish on the Jewel of the Argent, Zobeck, the Clockwork City!

What's the deadline? Your entry needs to be sent to the Seize the Tin Crown Contest at miranda(at)koboldquarterly(dot)com no later than March 9, 2012, by noon PST. (That’s about three weeks from now!)

We've got your all the rules and details after the jump...

And the funding site is live! The promotional video shows some of the artwork for this project, too-- especially a great image from project artist Eric Quigley.

This is looking like a great project and a very reachable funding goal. I know we have many tiers planned depending on the response. If this is a project you want, please sign up! (just in the time I wrote this, we received our first backer and we're $100 closer to a green light!)

-Ben.

Can you believe it? Our kobold traps are still disabled from the gnome raid, which means you can just waltz into our vaults and make off with a FREE issue of Kobold Quarterly #14.

(If you don’t waltz, you can tango into our vaults. The Charleston is also acceptable.)

Go to the Kobold Store, add issue #14 to your cart, and enter the coupon code KoboldWelcome at checkout to snatch a PDF copy of your own.

It’s our big Gen Con 2010 issue, with nearly 100 pages of articles by Ed Greenwood, Monte Cook, Skip Williams, Adam Daigle, Michael Furlanetto, John Baichtal, Jeff Tidball, Tim and Eileen Connors, John Wick and many others—plus an interview with Rob Heinsoo.

While you’re there, you might also want to get a copy of the new issue, Kobold Quarterly #20. Heck, you might even want to subscribe.

Remember, the vault closes again on February 14, so act soon!

Fresh on the heels of a Mythic Woodchuck, Sub Rosa #9 is here with 68 pages of Ars Magica content, including bonus material for the recently released The Cradle and the Crescent. We offer up beasts, jinn, sahir, companions, and all manner of juicy details to expand your stories in the Mythic Middle East, straight from the designers and playtester Jason Brennan. We’ve also got articles on a pious Companion knight, over 30 mythic texts and Gerald Wylie’s Storyguide’s Handbook offers up great advice for simplifying covenant creation! Once you toss in the Journal of Vulcanis Argens, the tidbits of goodness from across the internet collected for the stew we call Mappa Mundi, and an index of every book mentioned in every 5th edition supplement, you’ll wonder why everyone doesn’t pick up Sub Rosa.

Jeff Menges graciously provides us a very angelic cover, and we’ve got internal illustrations our regular artists like Angela Taylor, Alexandra Dopp, Anoeska Buijze, Kyle Cabral, and Jason Tseng. We’ve even dipped our toe in the pool of colored ink, with a gorgeous piece reminiscent of a stained glass window. I don’t think you could be disappointed with this bit of midwinter eye candy.

Check our subscription page for details on how you can order your copy today!

-Ben.

Awesome! Glad to see these arrive in the store.

For those who are curious, this has about twice the material as you'll find in the OGL version. There are a lot of stat blocks, some mechanics, all manner of goodies-- some will be familiar from Streets of Zobeck, but there's quite a bit of updated, consolidated and collected material. Personally, I'm glad to see the Zobeck articles from early issues of KQ included.

If you like a steampunk city and enjoy the eastern European vibe of Midgard, this is going to tickle your fancy.

If you're wanting a good read on game design, though-- I'd strongly recommend the Yellow Book. Sure, parts are for the hobbylancers, but it's all solid advice and all of it is useful for the GM looking to sharpen their game. I *still* reference my copy of #2 when I'm thinking about writing pitches.

Good stuff...now there's just the waiting to get my print copies! ;)

-Ben.

Today, the brand new expanded edition of the Zobeck Gazetteer is out for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game! This invaluable reference for the Free City includes material collected from dozens of sources as well as all-new content that you’ve never seen before.

Originally created by Wolfgang Baur for his own home D&D campaign and built out over years of adventures, sourcebooks and Kobold Quarterly articles, Zobeck is an exotic and powerful trade city at the crossroads of the Midgard campaign setting. Stern griffon riders keep watch atop its towers, kobolds scuttle in the shadows, and long-forgotten sorcerous clockwork experiments stir to life in bricked-up cellars.

The new Zobeck Gazetteer includes:

• New Clockwork and Lust cleric domains for Pathfinder RPG
• A complete writeup of the city’s Arcane Collegium
• New details of the gods of Zobeck
• Gypsy magic, gear, and feats
• Dozens of revised and updated clockwork, star and shadow spells
• All-new feats, relics, and magic items
• Plus a clockwork wizard school!

Illustrated with beautiful city maps by Sean Macdonald, the gazetteer format provides just enough detail to incorporate Zobeck into any fantasy campaign without being overwhelming.

Come to the city at the crossroads and try your luck! You can pick up a copy here or at the Kobold Store.

Journeys to the West: Fantastic Voyages in the Western Ocean

Designer: Christina Stiles (Unhallowed Halls, The Village of Briarton, Faery's Tale)
System: Pathfinder Roleplaying Game
Adventure Levels: 1 to 12
Length: approximately 96 pages, more if the project reaches the higher funding tier

A new six-adventure anthology is underway from Open Design! Set sail from Barsella, the City at the Edge of the world, home of adventurers and pirates, and explore the vast, uncharted waters of the Midgard campaign setting’s Western Ocean.

Discover the lush paradise known as the Isle of Morphoi, where the goddess of Memory seeks lost secrets through her network of cunning lamias and the shapeshifting morphoi. Encounter lost civilizations and their hidden colonies; explore mysterious fog-shrouded islands populated by sharp-toothed, scarred natives; battle epic leviathans of the deep that are rumored to crush villages or swallow whole ships; and gain priceless and unusual treasures!

Backers of Journeys to the West will join lead designer Christina Stiles to:

* Populate and describe the city of Barsella, gateway to the Wine Dark Sea: its high towers and exotic markets flush with strange salvage pulled from sunken ruins and looted from cryptic derelicts.

* Delve into the mysteries of the Isle of Morphoi and the cults of Mnemosyne, whose sorcerer-priestesses wield water and ley-line magic against adventurers, and swiftly leap from port to port as they engineer far-ranging conspiracies in smoky taverns and opulent throne rooms.

* Take to the waves with new ship plans, and master the dangers of the unknown with new traits, feats, spells, incantations, and gear.
Design unexplored islands where terrifying new monsters are worshiped as sacrifice-loving gods.

* Create haunted, treasure-laden ruins to test the mettle and sanity of fortune-seeking adventurers

Journeys to the West is designed for maximum use in any nautical or edge-of-civilization Pathfinder Roleplaying Game campaign. Backers will participate in brainstorming sessions, and some may add feats, spells, traits, and gear to the book as patron designers.

Backers at the Captain level and above may pitch seven islands, six adventures, eight monsters, and eight pirate lords. Their successful pitches will turn into fully credited design in the Open Design style.

Rally your crew, and hoist the sails! Fantastic voyages await!

You can sign up for it on Kickstarter-- here! And check out the addition options, depending on how we hit our funding marks!

Sub Rosa #8 has arrived, and it's a full harvest with another 76 deliciously packed pages. It's a little late, but I think you'll find it was worth the wait! Once again, we've got two adventures in this issue-- a medley of encounters along the Way of St. James by Ben McFarland and a mind-blowing epic tale about the legendary Belin from Erik Dahl. There's two full interviews; the first with Ars cover artist, Grey Thornberry, and the second with one of the Founders, Lisa Stevens! We've got articles on managing combat, more of the journal of Vulcanis Argens, and a companion knight, Bohemond of Lucerne! All of this is topped off with metacreator files for Bohemond and his squire along with our regular features of Mappi Mundi and both Under the Rose and News from the Line.

The cover is the handiwork of returning artist Gerald Wylie, and we've got internal illustrations from regulars like Angela Taylor, Anoeska Buijze, Jason Tseng, and the generous line veteran Jeff Menges along with newcomers Alex Dopp and Emily Vitori. The pieces fairly charge right off the page, and I think you're going to love them.

How can you get all this fantastic content? Just email us and send $4.50 (US) to marklawford@gmail.com via paypal, indicating you want Sub Rosa #8. We’ll get a yousendit.com link and password sent back right away. Download Sub Rosa #8, unzip it, and start reading. It’s that easy!*

As a bonus, the first three people who post a review of the Sub Rosa #8 issue will get Sub Rosa #9 free! Just email subrosa@distantlandspublising.com the link to the posted review and we’ll have the next issue ready for you late December/early January, free of charge.

Don’t wait and pick up your copy today!

Mark Lawford and Ben McFarland.

*Yes, we're working on that whole storefront issue. It's coming. We swear. Really! Seriously. We promise. What's more important? Storefronts, or undisclosed projects? Yes, we thought the same thing. You will see a storefront by #9, or Ben will be assisting you in the Lab!

Dark Roads and Golden Hells is a chance to explore the outer planes of Midgard in mind-expanding style: Inspired by Vance’s Dying Earth, Zelazny’s Chronicles of Amber; by the Outer Limits and The Twilight Zone, by Lovecraft’s eldritch abominations and Moorcock’s Eternal Champion, by just about everything written by China Mieville and Neil Gaiman – and of course by the baroquely stylish weirdness of Planescape and Beyond Countless Doorways, in which our own kobold king had no small part.

Rather than presenting a whole new cosmology, we’ll be concentrating on themes, flavorful locations, and special rules that can be integrated into any planar campaign, whether your PCs are occasional wide-eyed visitors from the prime material or hardened planar cynics supping with devils in a gothic planar crossroads. It doesn’t matter if your multiverse is shaped like a wheel, a spindle, or a million shifting spheres – We promise you’ll find a cornucopia of weird and wonderful locations, feats, spells, monsters, and adventures to insert into your campaign.

There’s a lot for the fertile, fevered minds of patrons to do here!
As well as brainstorming the themes and philosophies, strange powers, hazards, afflictions, and special rules for the outer planes, patrons of Dark Roads & Golden Hells will detail cosmic highways like the Niflheim Road, Tree of Worlds, and River Styx, create strange new creatures, and design new spells and rituals — plus whatever new traits, feats, class options, and any other strange and esoteric things your imaginations can devise!

We’ll also be presenting a dozen or more fully developed locations tied to the new Midgard campaign setting and the Free City of Zobeck: The homes of prominent gods and devils, domains of creatures like the shadow fey, and the afterlife of ghouls and kobolds. Pitched, voted for, and written by patrons, these gazetteers will provide everything you need to run adventures: history and geography, major NPCs, adventure seeds and special rules, and notes on how the PCs’ actions can impact and change them — ensuring they stay fresh and exciting for many return visits.

You can sign up for the Dark Roads and Golden Hells patron project here! Join the Dark Roads and Golden Hells project as a patron today. But remember: “You will not return unchanged.”

Coming soon to the Paizo store. Seriously. Soon. Like, probably when people wake up. I'm not kidding you, it'll be supplement-riffic. In the meantime, we're offering you this link to the Kobold store.

Sometimes you need a little help fighting monsters, especially when one or more have completely wiped out your stalwart band of adventurers—several times. Kobolds, of course, recognize the necessity for adding a little firepower to the group when that sort of thing happens.

To assist all those hapless, soon-to-be-dead-meat adventurers out there, Kobold Quarterly is starting a new contest, the Relics of Power contest! This time around our focus is on artifacts. We want you, our fans, to design some amazingly useful and interesting artifacts that adventurers can use to vanquish all those nasty villains and powerful monsters that keep pestering them. Each artifact will be evaluated by a panel of industry professionals and by the fans. And, yes, fame and prizes play a part in this.

So, what do you need to do? First, read all the stuff below, then start designing!

Here’s how it works: To enter this contest, your artifact submission MUST…

  • Be sent to the Relics of Power Contest—that is, to relicsofpower(at)koboldquarterly(dot)com—no later than June 30, 2011, by noon PST. (That’s a little less than two weeks from now!)
  • Be submitted as a doc, docx, or rtf attachment.
  • Read Relics of Power Submission [insert artifact name] in the email’s subject line. Your full name and contact information should be in the body of the email (not in your attachment).
  • Be designed for Pathfinder Roleplaying Game/3rd Edition D&D, 4th Edition D&D, or the AGE system.
  • Be 800 words or less, follow the format used for artifacts in each system, and have the appropriate flavor text and lore to flesh out your creation.

Who's judging?
Wolfgang Baur (KQ, Dungeon, Dragon, Planescape...you know this guy),
Jeff Grubb (Midgard, Al-Qadim, all-around-RPG-legend), and ...
Christopher Bodan (Kobold Quarterly, Privateer Press, Zombie Skies, and Soda Pop Miniatures.)

Minor and major artifacts are welcome! And they don’t necessarily have to be completely combat-oriented—have fun with them. Find all the extra details and other rules here, at Koboldquarterly.com.

Well, the numbers are a little off, but that's ok, it shifted during development--

There are 7 adventures for characters level 1 to 12. We managed 8 NPCs and 6 locations, and I think there are another two NPCs who snuck into location write-ups.

Streets of Zobeck builds on the material presented in the Zobeck Gazetteer and Kobold Quarterly to illuminate the Clockwork City’s seedier sections, shining a lantern into corners and alcoves perhaps best left in shadow. Make no mistake, this book is dark.

The anthology begins with an introduction to eight dodgy NPC residents of Zobeck’s more sinister quarters, from the unquiet soul of a murdered noblewoman to a naga sorceress who schemes to rule the city’s kobolds.

From there we enter a variety of places where adventurers who engage in dark dealings are sure to end up eventually. You can shop for illicit goods at the infamous Cartways black market, get a loan at the Cracked Coin, and find a night’s entertainment at the Silk Scabbard.

Streets of Zobeck’s seven adventures are the heart of the book, and they’re full of twisted plots, dark histories and double-crosses. Nothing is as it seems, and PCs will need to keep their wits about them if they want to navigate Zobeck’s underworld and come out ahead – or simply alive.

New feats, gear and spells round out the contents. Characters can use Crippling Blows and Diplomatic Strike to send a strong message, and Quiet Spell to use magic at times when silence is necessary. A PC’s background might include Callous Thug, Black-Marketeer and Riot Rouser. Spells such as Summon Blade, Stolen Identity and Indulgence enable all sorts of infamous acts, as do items like the Cloak of the Rat and Red Lady’s Scalpel.

Are you in? Then head over and pick your copy of Streets of Zobeck in print or PDF.

You asked for frozen empires and Open Design delivers, The Northlands are here!

Dan Voyce (Halls of the Mountain King) offers an amazingly diverse setting for adventures. To list just a few examples: characters can form Viking bands and raid the coasts; explore the magic-rich realm of the giants; enter savage kingdoms ruled by bears and wolves; or journey to the top of the world itself to retrieve the shoggoth-guarded flotsam and jetsam of alien shores.

There are new northern character races, classes, variants, and sorcerous bloodlines. Feats such as Name-Bearer, Thousand Yard Stare and Shieldbreaker, and traits like Born for the Longship, Raised by Monsters and Hard Drinker, will provide characters with distinctive flavor. Readers will also find pages of new weapons, armor, equipment, and treasure.

And magic! The magic of the North is wild and savage, and its power often requires a price. Characters can master grudge magic and rune magic, learn incantations and spells such as Curse of the Wild Moon, Loki’s Gift and Rain of Blades, and wield new and powerful magic items. Which will come in handy against Northlands’ new hazards (including the coil of the World Serpent itself), and new monsters such as the ice maiden, nightgarm, and the vengeful undead draugr.

But one of our contributors is taking a trip through parts of Europe and visiting a number of churches while there. They asked if we couldn't wait just a bit and use the article for #7.

We agreed, but we don't want you left without anything to read, so we've offered you this:

?Beware the setting sun. Something comes from the forest. The monks? wards are??

The dark stain of the corpse?s lifeblood has, unfortunately, blotted out the rest of the message. Grasped in his right hand is clutched a piece of chalk; in the left is a small, leather-bound tome, propped open to a certain page by his decomposed thumb.

The rest of the monastery has been ransacked and vandalized. An overturned table has been crushed by a massive bookshelf. Altars lie empty of idols or holy symbols. Shutters wave open in the wind, revealing an orange orb just beginning to touch the western horizon.

If there is information to be gained, it must be done quickly?

What Lurks Outside
A glance at the tome grants the reader Arcana, Nature, and Religion checks, each with an easy DC. With each success, an objective is gained. Due to time constraints, after these initial checks, each person can only make one check or assist in one check before the sun sets.

Soldiers of Fortune, the military sourcebook for 4th Edition Dungeons & Dragons is now in print. Written by game designer and decorated veteran Matt James, this is the first Open Design product to proudly bear the Midgard Campaign Setting logo. Order it today in the Kobold Store!

Soldiers of Fortune is a guidebook to how war is waged in the fantasy world of Midgard, easily ported to any campaign. Players can build battle-savvy sellswords with the mercenary theme and new feats and powers such as Siege Engineer, precision onslaught, and lord of war. New paragon paths include the spellscourge mercenary and sacrosanct legionnaire (who can dominate minions with the divine conscript power.)

Soldiers of Fortune also offers players and GMs a tutorial on the art of war in “The Midgard Stratagems,” edicts that have guided military strategists to victory throughout the world of Midgard. You can put these teachings to the test in the adventure “The Battle of Sanguine-Crag Pass” fighting alongside (and against) NPCs built from new templates to help GMs create a fantasy army: from the jittery conscript up to the dreaded Necrolord.

Serve as a free soldier, or raise your own army to win fame and glory! Pick up Soldiers of Fortune and let your enemies despair.

A new week means a monster-tastic Monday, and Kobold Quarterly loves it some monsters!

Today? The Sewer Sweep-- but it doesn't discern between vermin and dungeon delvers, so explorers have been warned...

The fires of creation burn hot! Today, Open Design is launching its most ambitious design project to date: the world of Midgard! You can be part of this rare opportunity to design a published campaign setting. Your co-authors in this endeavor will be Wolfgang Baur, Jeff Grubb, and Brandon Hodge.

Midgard is the setting for Wolfgang’s own homebrew D&D campaign. Sections of it have been revealed publicly over the years through articles in Kobold Quarterly magazine and in Open Design projects such as Courts of the Shadow Fey, Tales of the Old Margreve, and Dwarves of the Ironcrags. Most of it exists only as hint and allusions, though, and scribbled notes in Wolfgang’s campaign notebook. Which is where you come in!

You can become a patron of the Midgard project and get behind-the-scenes access and input into the creation of Midgard’s seven regions. Add your original ideas, or even elements of your own home campaign: NPCs, magic items, heroes, villains, towns, cities -- even whole pantheons. Along the way, Wolfgang will be hosting regular live online chats for patrons and designers. (Plus other fun surprises.)

The finished worldbook will be available to patrons as a limited-edition hardcover, and to the public as a softcover. Among other perks patrons will also receive the Worldbuilder’s Guidebook: a collection of worldbuilding essays from Wolfgang, Jeff and others.

The gates of the world have opened! Join the Midgard design project as a patron here!

I've picked this up only to be alerted there's a second copy that doesn't have the Pathfinder logo on it...what's up?

That was a big draw for me-- knowing this was compatible, specifically because I was considering a project and thought this might be a good fit. Are we not compatible anymore, because that's going to make me a little crabby?

-Ben.

Wondering what the next project for Open Design will be?

Looking to start the new year with an opportunity to learn more about RPG design?

Look no further-- Midgard is coming!

It's the vicious monster lurking in the urban sprawl-- an uncaring creature to terrorize the unwitting inhabitants, the Chimney Daemon!

And so you know:
Chimney daemons do not cause lung disease in adventurers, but can cause death. Pregnant adventurers should still avoid chimney daemons. It is unknown if chimney daemons cause birth defects.
