My answer to the thread question is "Yes".

(RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16, 2012 Top 32)

One thing I learned from RPG Superstar: you learn more by competing for one week than you do by observing from the sidelines for one year. All you get by walking away when you see someone else with credentials is a guarantee that you won't get a chance to earn credentials of your own.

Maps for the Spider Goddess!

Blood for the Blood God, Skulls for the Skull Throne!

Sorry, wrong multiverse. Still, this looks seriously awesome.

This thread so far has been calm despite you putting words into people's mouths. Can you take your complaints about the other threads and talk about them in those other threads, or better yet, flag the posts your talking about and move on.

I've so far enjoyed the civil discussion, speculation and people's opinions. The most provocative comments being made in this thread are actually yours memorax, sorry to say. I haven't seen anyone dooming and glooming, but anyone has a right to say their interest is lessened due to Monte suddenly leaving. I have not seen any major 5e bashing in this thread, or 4e. No ones trying to start an edition war or flaming but i'm as entitled to say "I didn't like 4e and i'm not as excited about 5e after hearing Monte is leaving" as you are to tell me your own opinion.

And though I may not agree with it, it will no doubt be interesting to read and I will respect it.

Miranda Horner and Kim Mohan are not designers they are little more than editors.

Their primary jobs may be editors, but first, I'm pretty sure both of them have done a fair amount of design work, and second, the phrase "little more than editors" drastically undervalues the role editors play in this industry (and by extension, their involvement with the product in question).

I never made it to the top 32 either in the years that I entered.

If you don't make it, don't get discouraged (it's been said before, but it bears repeating). The only way to get better is to keep writing and learning, and try pitching articles at places like Kobold Quarterly—they're always looking for website articles! There are third party publishers always looking for new authors in the forums here, at EnWorld, or at RPGFreelancer.com. I would also be terribly remiss if I don't plug the fan-run Wayfinder, which is currently looking for submissions for issue #7. It's a fantastic way to get your stuff out there, get it edited, laid out, and illustrated so you get a taste of what it's like to be a RPG freelancer. (Careful, it's addictive.)

Whatever you do, don't stop trying. :D

WoTC's genius in 2000 when they created the OGL was what made them "The World's Most Popular Role Playing Game."

Who is left from those times? Monte? And only because he was hired to come back.

Take a look at the known members of the 5th Edition design team:

Mike Mearls: Iron Heros
Monte Cook: Arcana Evolved, Ptolus
Bruce Cordell: Hyperconscious
Jeremy Crawford: Blue Rose
Rodney Tompson: Star Wars Saga (published by WotC, but same Idea)

I think whoever recruited that team had the same idea as you.

Now, we will find out who the oldies are amongst us.

You missed out...

*And then Neil woke up and looked over to the calender to see that it was only December 6th, 2011, and the judging has yet to begin. The long hours of reading had all been a strange, strange dream.*

Completely off topic-

I would just like to applaud Ross Byers on his use of the word "rubric". Not something I see in print very often :)

Since this just happened to me, I thought I would post it for others.

I apparently just dodged a bullet, as I had my item all ready to go (properly formatted, spells researched, price calculated, etc.)

I was perusing some of the older superstar final 32 item submissions, when I noticed a previous item that was dabbling in the same area my item was supposed to (incorporeal creatures, in this case). Then I noticed a second one. There was a third submission in the critique my item threads that also dealt with incorporeal creatueres and one of the points against it was that the writer had not done their research and seen that this an area already explored by previous contestants.

So, it is back to the drawing board for me. And I urge all prospective item creators to look back over the previous years of the contest at what the actual items were to avoid a lack of originality ding.

Also, look over the Judges Critique My Item threads. I often find the judges comments on the items that did not win to be more informative than the winning entries.

Noted.

I'll set the throttle to "FLOURISH" right now.

(Publisher, Legendary Games & Necromancer Games)

I've been thinking about this situation for some time. I even talked with the Legendary Games guys a few months ago about reaching out to Nick as I see Bill has done. Good job, Bill. But it has become clear to me that this whole thing is just too overwhelming for Nick. People want nice clear logical reasons for what he is doing. I don't know him. But in my job I see people in similar situations--situations that have just gotten way out of control. And I can tell you they don't act logically and clearly in the way people here want.

It also seems everyone (well, almost everyone) wants to help Nick, to see him succeed. I sure do. He's written some of the best stuff I've ever read. He is very talented.

Keeping up the pressure on these boards or by private emails or calls will likely have the exact opposite effect.

My hope is this, people let the dust settle. Nick reestablishes contact with someone. Rehabs his name a bit with the RPG group. And if that helped him get his feet under him and turn to handling RC all the better.

Maybe backing off is the best way to see Nick's return, which I think is what everyone wants. Just a thought. And maybe back off a bit on the judgment of him. I mean, I can think of times in my life I've dug myself into a hole or made mistakes or done things I wish I hadn't. I'm pretty sure we all can. And saying "yeah, but not as bad as HIM" is hardly a helpful response. This industry is way too small to be out for blood. Don't waste that hate on an artist who has gotten himself in a hole.

Again, just my thoughts. Your mileage may vary.
